THIS! Luckily I decided to log in for the first time in quite some weeks, and when the new update will be released tomorrow, approximately 6K or 7K would be gone, if I understand what's going on correctly, including a number of sleeping LI's who were just for levelling. The latter nets some big Heritage Runes and some ashable items that reward Ancient Script. But the 6K or 7K relics, which I'm converting at a Relic Master right now, give a lot (!) of low level Heritage Runes, probably enough to finish the complete Reward Track by using them with my lvl 50 toon.
So yet again something is removed, and perhaps a lot of players will miss the opportunity to get something in return for all of their LI levelling the last 13 years, just because like me they kept their relics and shards in expectation of some decent conversion option down the road in the new LI system.
Not getting a specific Dev post for this, weeks in advance, with a proper explanation of what would come, is just a shame!
You might be able to fill a reward track with them, but most players don't have that much. And if you have so many shards/relics then I assume that you also have a storage full of runes already. My storage is still filled with AS boxes and items I can't flame because my AS is constantly capped.
How do you get heritage runes out of relics? I have mountains of shards and relics but not many runes left. I haven't melded relics in years but I don't recall getting runes out of the deal, just shards. Are they random potential bonuses from melding?

Yes, that's exactly what it is. You meld tons & you have the chance of a random rune pop. Lower the tier of the relics, lower the rune.
I didn't do anything special to get to a few thousand relics, just always co-levelling three or four useless LI's next to the the main three LI slots, and deconstructing them at 60. Continued to do so even after the imbued LI's came. And now it turns it refining them all gave enough low level runes to finish this reward track completely and perhaps the next one as well (and 700K shards, which will likely be obsolete as of next update). Hopefully more people will act on this before the update launches.
Anyway, this is not a good thing, that we should be anxious to miss out on stuff due to strange decisions from SSG.

I can understand the feeling to be anxious on missing out on the good stuff. Happens every time I quest in an area with capped currency. For me the good stuff is housing items, and I don't even want to know how much currency I lost due to cap. At least I didn't get to cap in Yondershire questing through all of it, but Gundabad was way too low.
Glad I asked about the runes. I had something like 10K relics sitting around. Now instead of just having them go poof, I have a bag full of blue pills that will help smooth out any slow playing periods. A mug of Barliman's Best for the assistance!
