so yeah, my guess for your latest, after an initial reading, is Brandy Hall
How do I come up with them so fast? It's easy -- I just slack off on the work I should actually be doing. (I hope my boss doesn't see this.)

Anyway, Brandy Hall is the correct answer. One thing I learned while putting this riddle together is that "Gorhendad," as in Gorhendad Oldbuck -- the Hobbit who first started delving Brandy Hall -- translates as "great-grandfather."

The last line, by the way, refers to Merry's expansion of the library after he became Master of the Hall.

Haha Well I'm glad you're a slacker, it results in some great riddles. Too bad there isn't good money in riddle writing (or is there... hmm)

how about this one, probably easy. i'll work on another whopper over the holiday, and spring it on you all next week hopefully

She often trips and sometimes falls
    But clumsy she is not
She often laughs, she sometimes roars
She runs and can’t be caught
    She chatters on incessantly
Yells or whispers in your ear
Yet her voice can be quite soothing
When she sings as you lay near

Here's one before I leave for the day:

Born of Durin's folk, imprisoned by worm long,
Rescued by doughty man, taken by leader strong,
Given by princess fair, used by halfling bold.
Hear my clarion cry, see my glint of silver cold,
Horses march in curvèd line, o'er me bringing courage near.
Take me from my garb of green, to be heard once a year.

    Re: The Riddle-Game

Here are a couple more I just wrote. The second one should be pretty easy, I don't know about the first.

I go to battle though I fear we won't win,
I'm great in girth yet still quite mighty,
Alas I was separated from my kin,
And the red serpent devoured me.

Here a great lord dwelt during time of celebration,
A great treasure he guarded, it drew much temptation,
Darkness then entered there, darkness unbidden,
The great lord it slew, his great treasure taken.

    and another one:

There is a mighty island bare,
    An island rather rounded,
If ever you might set foot there,
    Beware! You will be drownded!

Is the 1st one a mumakil/oliphaunt (specifically the one Sam and Frodo see in Ithilien)?

Is the 2nd Moria? (great lord = durin; great treasure = mithril; darkness that entered = balrog)

    Re: The Riddle-Game

sorry, mumakil or oliphaunt is incorrect. Moria isn't the answer to the second riddle, either. It wasn't really a time of celebration when the balrog came in. Now here's another riddle I wrote: (I have a lot of free time right now. )

Hear my hammer! Fear my anvil!
I joined the sun and moon to conquer darkness,
    And darkness indeed did groan.
Hear my hammer! Fear my anvil!
A cleaver of iron and retriever of light,
This also I made on my own.
Hear my hammer! Fear my anvil!
Who gave life to a dragon greater than Angband's own?
    It was I alone.
Hear my hammer! Fear my anvil!
    For I have great renown.

and here's another one, I just can't stop!

Where into a mirror he was gazing,
I stand where once did the father,
Where he saw that a crown he was wearing,
And he wore it ever after.

    Angry Re: The Riddle-Game

Gaaaa! Too many riddles, I keep getting them all mixed up! I can't think straight, curse you!

I know the last one is Khelad-Zheram (Can't spell... because of too many riddles!).

Just for fun, I guess Theoden for the first one, and it kinda makes since if you consider him fat...

P.S. It's not fair! You had six hours of free time?!?!?! From about 1 to about 7 you were writing riddles!

    Re: The Riddle-Game

Telchar! He made the DRAGON-helm of Dor-Lomin that Turin wore often... He also made Angrist! That would explain the Iron-cleaver and light retreiver part. He also made Narsil, which he is famous for. I just don't understand the Sun and Moon part. How 'bout them apples?

    Re: The Riddle-Game

Khelad-Zheram is incorrect but close. Telchar is correct. The sun and moon part: Narsil translates to "sun-moon."

EDIT: I just realized that you guessed Theoden for the first one. Sorry, Theoden is incorrect.

unfortunately there are too many places with a treasure, a great lord, a darkness who comes and kills the Lord, and takes over the treasure. The celebration throws it all off.
Closest I could think of was Nargothrond, as before Glaurung came, that kingdom had been successful staying hidden from Morgoth with the help of Melian.
It wouldn't be Gondolin would it? Or are we thinking on too big of a scale?

    Re: The Riddle-Game

Aspidochelon? Hmm... it was a big turtle guy, but his name was Fastitocalon. Maybe Aspidochelon is another name for him? I suppose you're correct.

"unfortunately there are too many places with a treasure, a great lord, a darkness who comes and kills the Lord, and takes over the treasure. The celebration throws it all off."

Yes, there are many places with treasures and lords being stolen and slain, but none of the guesses have yet happened during a time of celebration. I thought that riddle was going to be easy... maybe I'll give you guys a little more time with it and if you can't guess it I'll give you a hint.

sorry, Bombur and an ent are incorrect.

    Found the spelling! Kheled-zaram

The only thing I can find that "stands" near it is the Zirakzigil...
