There is no telling whether the wight that Tom chased off was actually the Last Prince or not (or for that matter, whether the Last Prince that Lalia meets really is or not...that's simply the barrow of the Last Prince.)

Er, no... I'm sure someone already corrected this in the previous 5 pages, but as I recall the inscription over the door said "SPEAK FRIEND AND ENTER". All you had to do to make the door open was to say the Elvish (Sindarin?) word for friend, mellon.

You might not like The Hobbit. It was written when Tolkien thought the only literary market for tales about his Middle Earth was children's stories, so it's pretty simplistic. I'd say read it for background (it's not very long), but don't let its "shallow" style dissuade you from reading LOTR.

I'm rather curious about the significance of the ruins called Bronwë's Folly by Archet. Bronwë is the Sindarin form of the Quenya Voronwë, or "Steadfast One". According to the description in the explorer deed and simple logic, the name does not refer to the Noldorin elf that lead Tuor to Gondolin. The only other Voronwë that I can think of (and I'm geeky enough to have searched for more) is Mardil, the first Ruling Steward of Gondor. This could, potentially, make sense, since it was despite Mardil's efforts that Eärnur, the last king of Gondor, ran off to fight the Witch-king of Angmar, so there is already a tie between him and the chief Rightwraith. The only problem with that scenario is that the Witch-king resided at Minas Morgul at the time, and it was there that Eärnur was shuffled off his mortal coil. More importantly, the deed description states that the ruins were originally built by a Cardolan lord, and Cardolan fell more than three-hundred years before the birth of Mardil.

I've not yet gotten very far along in the game due to a faulty internet connection, so if it is explained in subsequent quests, just tell me to wait and find out. Otherwise, who is the Bronwë that built the ruins and what folly did he commit?

Bronwë is the Sindarin word for Endurance. There is no actual lore significance. When I recommended the name, I had not realized that it is also what the Elves called Frodo when he sailed West.

Actually, one nugget I haven't seen mentioned here...

I'm not sure if it happens anywhere else in the world, but sometimes on my Hobbit in the Shire I'd pan the camera and suddenly see a large flock of dark black birds flying off like they just came from some tree.

It's a creepy feeling, as you can almost imagine "The eyes of Sauron have already infiltrated the Shire and are everywhere now..."

It was an effect added in late Beta, and we loves it! You can think of it as crebain spies of Sauron (or Saruman) fleeing to report to their master, or just as idle flocks of birds flying off innocently. Either way, it was a great addition that gave the world an additional level of immersion.

and to answer another part of the original question - while its possible it was named for someone's folly... I suspect its named folly in the architectural sense: a costly ornamental building with no practical purpose, esp. a tower or mock-Gothic ruin built in a large garden or park.

Man, this thread is still awesome. Love the random tangents XD

Have I ever mentioned how I love the archers in Esteldin that scream at you to get out of the way while they are firing? I also love the hobbits sailing on the Brandywine who ask you if you are mad and are planning to drown yourself XD

Here's another one. One of the hobbit racial traits is "Stoop for a stone". In The Hobbit, the line this refers to is (paraphrased) 'Birds and small rabbits flee when they see a hobbit stoop for a stone'.

It's just a minor thing, mentioned in passing in a mere sentence, but there it is, in the game. Which is why my floppy jester hat is always of for you devs for having put so much effort and thought into the game's creation.

I noticed at the festival grounds the Hobbits dancing around saying something like "it's good to dance after filling the corners".
"Filling in the corners" is what the Hobbits called eating a big meal, in the book.

Yeah, I like all the skills where you can directly point to the book and be like, oh yeah, I remember that! I can't think of anything else off of the top of my head though.

    Hey, 59 pages, hooray!

i noticed new structures were added, like the arch or the pedestrian stone bridge (i think) and other structures... I am assuming they will finish their work once all of the expantions or books are added for the game...

Initially couldn't decide whether Gollum or the goblins drew this, but I guess the goblins did not know of the existence of the ring (seen on the figure's finger) so must have been Gollum...

Its very eerie the way that Gollum has set himself up as this frightening being deep within Goblin Town, keeping the goblins that live there away from his cave in the depths (the goblins always suspected something sinister lurking down there) ...with the aid of the curious and corrupting power of the One Ring of course...

The sorts of delusions of grandeur that come with the ring and the power it grants to the bearer (according to the stature of the bearer) are reflected so well in this cave painting. A very spooky thing to happen across, and a little sad and pitiable too, when you think about Gollum's past.

Near his cave - perhaps to mark his domain, or as an expression of his power (making himself out to be a giant), or even to keep too many goblins from wandering in (of course the odd straggler would be welcome... if he was particularly hungry...)
