Probably the Shire calendar; whereas I meant the "standard" calendar. So in a way, we're both correct.
Doriath didn't go to the Battle of Unnumbered Tears because Celegorm and Curufin, two sons of Feanor, had been real jerks towards Beren and Luthien, and also demanded Thingol's Silmaril.
Name all seven sons of Feanor?

Maedhros, Maglor, Celegorm, Caranthir, Curufin, Amrod and Amras..
Easy one; Who was known as the Hewer of Caves?
Thus he came alone to Angband's gates, and he sounded his horn, and smote once more upon the brazen doors, and challenged Morgoth to come forth to single combat. And Morgoth came.
Elrodan - 49 Capt, Elendilmir - Aurora Australis
Finrod,
Another easy one, what was the Hornburg named after?
Landroval - Nibenrhaw ~ Loremaster | Eladrid ~ Burglar | Squeesh ~ Defiler
Meneldor - Fungushnitzel ~ Minstrel | Clingan ~ Champion | Snapnakh ~ Stalker
That would be Gram. Not sure if he had anything to do with the mountain or not though...
Who sired the line of the Mearas?
Landroval - Nibenrhaw ~ Loremaster | Eladrid ~ Burglar | Squeesh ~ Defiler
Meneldor - Fungushnitzel ~ Minstrel | Clingan ~ Champion | Snapnakh ~ Stalker
That would be Felarof, Eorl's horse
What dragon's fire was said to have been able to melt magic rings?
"And long there he lay, an image of the spendour of the Kings of Men in glory undimmed before the breaking of the world."
It doesnt get any better than this.
It was Earendil. Who were his grandfathers?![]()
The bright blade of Anduril shone like a sudden flame as he swept it out. "Elendil!" he cried. "I am Aragorn son of Arathorn and am called Elessar, the Elfstone, Dunadan, the heir of Isildur Elendil's son of Gondor. Here is the Sword that was Broken and is forged again! Will you aid me or thwart me? Choose swiftly!"
Turgon and Huor, a lofty family
Where was the Rainy Stair?
Thus he came alone to Angband's gates, and he sounded his horn, and smote once more upon the brazen doors, and challenged Morgoth to come forth to single combat. And Morgoth came.
Elrodan - 49 Capt, Elendilmir - Aurora Australis
I believe that was the waterfall at the western gate of Moria.
What did Frodo name his pony after the ring was destroyed?
Landroval - Nibenrhaw ~ Loremaster | Eladrid ~ Burglar | Squeesh ~ Defiler

Sorry, you were wrong Womdon...keep guessing![]()

The Rainy stair.
Isn't that where Glaurung was slain by by Turin? A waterfall in Celebros.

I think that's right. It was also called Dimrost. A bridge built above it was where Níniel (Niënor) first saw the Ravines of Teiglin, where years later she would die, throwing herself into the torrent below after the dragon Glaurung, before dying, removed her spell of forgetfullness so that she realized her husband, Túrin, was actually her brother.
One of my favorite (and most haunting) tales of the Silmarillion.

Correct! Dimrost, the Rainy Stair, afterwards called the Shuddering stair (or fall, can't remember) after Nienor suffered a shuddering spell there... Deep in the forest of Brethil 'twas...
Thus he came alone to Angband's gates, and he sounded his horn, and smote once more upon the brazen doors, and challenged Morgoth to come forth to single combat. And Morgoth came.
Elrodan - 49 Capt, Elendilmir - Aurora Australis
Darn, I don't remember. It would be easy enough to look at that passage in the book, but that would be cheating (well, too easy).
I seem to recall Tom referred to them by their physical features, is that it? Or was it something to do with Tom's pony Fatty Lumpkin?

What usefull item is made of hithlain?
An uncle of Bergil, the kid who ran around for awhile with Pippin in Gondor.
Who was Oromendil?

Lol had to brush up on the Silmarillion lore for this one, but i believe he is the cousin of Tar-Elendil, fourth king of Numenor.
What was the name of Gil-Galad's legendary glaive that he used in the Battle of Dagorlad Plain (bonus if you can say what it means in common speach).
"And long there he lay, an image of the spendour of the Kings of Men in glory undimmed before the breaking of the world."
It doesnt get any better than this.

Melkor, the Vala, who then became Morgoth, thusly named by Feanor, corrupted the Balrogs (Valaraukar) who were Maiar themseves.
What are the only two (2) examples/references to modern times within Tolkien's actually-written stories about Middle-earth and its history/inhabitants?
