I agree with you completely, Talanthiar, far too quiet in the Riddle-Thread. Part of that is my fault I suppose, I haven't written any riddles in a long time. Just got back from vacation not too long ago, though, and I'm glad to see you've offered one up.

I'll wager a guess that the riddle is concerning Numenor. Heart of the given gift, hallowed then defiled, cleansed by wrath... all seem to describe it. The five peninsulas of Numenor all ended with the word "star", so I'll guess Meneltarma, the mountain at the heart of Numenor, which rose above the rest of the island.

By the way, I don't have much to do at work today, and you've inspired me. I think I'll see if I can work out a riddle or two.

Cool, nice riddle Talanthiar

Well, I said I'd post one today so here goes nothing:

From Hirilorn, the cunning escapist's path,
And thrumming agent of Greenleaf's wrath,
Silver for Kings and Elf-leaders great,
Golden within the Doom-shunner's house,
White for the wisened old wanderer of fate,
Black for the empty-handed one's spouse.

Hair!

Glorfindel was golden-haired, Gandalf was white-haired, and Luthien was black-haired; at least, that's how I read the last three lines.

Legolas' bow was strung with one of Galadriel's hairs, as well.

The first line by itself, though, had me puzzled.

A very well-written riddle!

Re: The Riddle-Game

Thanks, and you're right of course. The first line referred to Luthien's escape from Hirilorn by using her hair. I'll see if I can come up with another one.

Threw together a quick one, we were slipping a bit low.

Small and precious,
darkens all to be seen,
Yet reveals hidden truths.
Destroyed by the greatest of the small,
and the best of the worst.
Alone, they would have fallen,
Together, only one.

Hm, could it be the one ring? I thought that we all agreed not to use that by unspoken agreement, so maybe I'm wrong, but here's why I think that:

Yep. That's what I get for asking a random friend for a topic for a riddle .
The precious was also refering to it being made of gold. The hidden truths is the 'spirit world' where the Ring-Bearer sees the wraiths (and elves) as they truly are.

Seriously? No one is even wagering a guess?

I vomited this one up in 30 seconds before logging off at work for the day. Don't tell me that's the way to fool you...

Elvyen, you haven't lost whatever skill you had before you left. Worms is indeed it. Worms eat apples, dig in the dirt, some breathe fire, and some dine on your remains.

excellent I liked that one

I have neither the time nor the mental capacity lately to write riddles so I must pass my turn to someone else for now.

It seems like the old thread is slowing down lately. Everyone else must be just as spent as I am these days hehe

If no one minds, I'll toss one out.

Quaker, whaler, sailor, spacer, flyer.
Oil, coffee, cylon, book, show, old and new.

What is my name?

Nice riddle, MissGrace. I'm not exactly a Battlestar Galactica expert, but I think I picked out enough references from the riddle to guess Starbuck It seems to make sense with book, show, quaker, whaler, sailor, coffee, and from what I know of BSG, show, spacer, and cylon

If that's correct I'll see if I can come up with a riddle. They've been few and far between lately, just too busy at work to really think about them. I'll try though

Still not certain I got that last riddle, but I'll post one up that I just wrote.

Purified by fire, this essence of earth,
Its lack of distortion only proves its worth,
A gateway of vision and truth from afar,
One of the three pillars of Ilurambar,
Hardened, shattered, molten, then sheer,
The Lady's kind gift to supersede fear.

Hopefully it's challenging. I haven't done much riddling lately.

Steel.

Im going to guess crystals.
the first lines referring to diamonds,
next line referring to the palantiri, (crystal ball-ish )
next line referring to ice i would think, one of the 3 aspects of the walls of the world
and the phial of galadriel was crystalline glass

all types of crystals?

I'm sorry, but it isn't steel.

The phial isn't the answer either, although it is referenced.

Crystal isn't what I was going for, but you're very close. Actually, you used the answer in your explanation, so I'll go ahead and say you got it. Glass is the answer.

Made from silicates - essence of earth, one of the three components of the wall of the world, and it was what Galadriel's phial was made of.

Is this the end of the Riddle-game thread?
Whatever happened to elves who stood amidst the field of battle in glory, like the eye of a storm, using their awe and bearing to stare down foes while they spoke like thunder and swung swords that shone with inner light? That is what I wanted to see. And that's not what this class is doing. -- What someone at Turbine should have said.

To answer your riddle, no. It's a slow patch due to summer vacations and exams and whatnot. That being said...

A place of leaving,
A place of losing,
A place of remembering,
and returning once more.
