    Desperate

I have wasted the best part of a week trying to get a free trial version that will allow me past level 5-6.
I have tried through Fileplanet, Codemasters, Lotro. I have sat out four or five 8 hour sessions of downloading, I have tried with TDM which seized up my PC and without. I got a free trial version (Shadows of Angmar) 'trial key', but nothing I had would accept it. I know you have many similar 'help' posts, but I have not been able to pull them together into a satisfactory answer. Someone else has said they had 10 fabulous days. All I can say is that so far I have had nearly that of misery and friustration.

The download said it needed about 9.4 Gb. I allocated 13 Gb. When it got to "Lotro.setup" it claimed there was not enough space. I found it had already taken up the 13 Gb allocated. I have disinstalled both TDS and Lotro.

    So:

    1. Can anyone give me a stage by stage, idiot proof, way to achieve a trial version which will let me past level 5-6?

    2. Can anyone tell me precisely how much space this thing needs?

I have 13.3 Gb available, but if necessary can re-arrange the disk partitions to give me 3 or 4 more. I agree with Skrelac's post yesterday, but I am quite keen to give it another go.

No doubt the game is superb, but how am I to know. Certainly all the hassle to get a bug free trial version is not encouraging. I am quite happy to accept less than the best resolution - it is the game I wish to examine not just the graphics.

The Turbine Download Manager (the .torrent type thing) has never worked for me.

Did you try from this link?

Yes. But a) it did not seem to be relevant for the trial version - or did I get something wrong? and b) I am not sure that the US version is what I need, as I live in France.

If you're trying to play the EU version, you need to download it from Codemasters, through lotro-europe.

If you want to play the North American version, on the NAO servers, you should download from that link.

To be safe, you need to have about 20GB of disk space. Around 9.4GB for the download, and 10GB for the installation, maybe more (see System Requirements). This is for the high resolution client. You can get by with less for the standard resolution client, which does not have the 3+ GB DAT file for the high resolution textures. So maybe 15GB for the standard resolution client. Once the client is installed and working, you can delete the download if you need to free up disk space.

Generally, you need twice the indicated disk space for downloading and installing an application. The reason is that you have the downloaded file which takes up X GB, but the application isn't installed yet. Then when you install it, it needs another X GB of disk space for the installation. Most installers also use the temp folder to unpack the files before installing them, which uses even more disk space. So whenever you download an application to install, you need to allow at least 2x the indicated space in order to install it, too.

In Tarrnat's post, The Lord of the Rings Online™ Free Trial FAQ, at the top in the General Trial Questions, there are two links. One is to the download page where you can download the client (either standard or high resolution). The other is a link where you can create a Trial account (provided you have another email address). I suggest not creating a new Trial account until you get the client installed and working. You don't need an account to install the client.

Once the client is installed, launch it. It should update itself with the latest patches before getting to the login screen. Once it gets to the login screen, then you can create a new Trial account to log in with. This way you'll be able to get the most use out of the 10 days.

As for which client to download, if your system meets the recommended system requirements, you should be able to run the high resolution client in Very High or Ultra High mode. If your system meets the minimum requirements but not the recommended requirements, then download the standard resolution client, since you probably won't be running with the Ultra High settings and won't need the high resolution textures file (which is over 3GB in size).

Good luck, and let us know how it goes or if you have any other questions...

You can play on either the US servers (Turbine) or the European servers (Codemasters). There are many from Europe that play on the US servers. If you prefer to play on the European servers, then visit http://www.lotro-europe.com/ for Codemasters' site. Codemasters provides servers for several languages, including French if you'd prefer that. For any help or questions on the European servers, you'll need to ask on the Codemasters forums. Whatever you decide on, good luck and have fun...

    Smile Re: Desperate

Many thanks for all of that. It will take some time to get it all done. I don't know if I can free all that space, but fortunately my temp files are on a different partition.

I have tried Codemasters and got no where. They sent me to Fileplanet to download, and I could not get that to work either. So I will go for one of the other options.

Probably be May now before I get it all worked out. Will no doubt be back then with more trouble.

    Thanks again.

    Unhappy Re: Desperate

Sorry to bother you again. I seem incapable of getting a workable download.

Following above advice I have rearranged the partitions on one of my HD to give me enough free space.

I have already downloaded the trial several times from different sources and disinstalled them.

I have followed the link above and downloaded both the standard and high-res downloaders, but both now refuse to download claiming that there is a problem with a DMZ function.................

Whoah.....must have done something right, it is downloading again.......but I am trying to sort out a trial with Codemasters where, so far, I have also had little success.

    Thanks again for your patience.

    Unhappy Re: Desperate

    Still a blight on progress.
As suggested I got going again with a different email address.

Things went fine till I nearly arrived at the level 6 point where it all blocked up before....just fighting my way out of that cave to go to that square where the dwarf waits to go on somewhere else.

Great excitement - I was about to find out if it would work this time. Boof... the server site went off line and I had to log off.

When I retried to log on this morning I got the message "an update error occurred. A connection error failed"

As you can see there is nothing wrong with my internet connection. So what the ***** is wrong now? Anyone know?

Will I ever get a trial run to work far enough to find out if the game is worth buying???

    Still desperate.

You probably know by now that the servers are offline because of a big update to the game.

    Re: Desperate

    No, sorry, I didn't.
5pm now and still the same messages. I have difficulty converting the times given for maintenance with times here in France.

To me it is just another day scrubbed on a limited time trial run on which I have already lost two days....and this is my second run under a different email address. On the first attempt I got 2 days then progress was blocked by problems with Turbine downloader and other problems.

Anyway, thanks for the explanation, I will go away and cool off!!

Try uninstalling the Turbine Download Manager completely, and install the full client from lotro.com, support, installation, question #1.
