1. Can anyone give me a stage by stage, idiot proof, way to achieve a trial version which will let me past level 5-6?
2. Can anyone tell me precisely how much space this thing needs?
I have 13.3 Gb available, but if necessary can re-arrange the disk partitions to give me 3 or 4 more. I agree with Skrelac's post yesterday, but I am quite keen to give it another go.
To be safe, you need to have about 20GB of disk space. Around 9.4GB for the download, and 10GB for the installation, maybe more (see System Requirements). This is for the high resolution client. You can get by with less for the standard resolution client, which does not have the 3+ GB DAT file for the high resolution textures. So maybe 15GB for the standard resolution client. Once the client is installed and working, you can delete the download if you need to free up disk space.
Generally, you need twice the indicated disk space for downloading and installing an application. The reason is that you have the downloaded file which takes up X GB, but the application isn't installed yet. Then when you install it, it needs another X GB of disk space for the installation. Most installers also use the temp folder to unpack the files before installing them, which uses even more disk space. So whenever you download an application to install, you need to allow at least 2x the indicated space in order to install it, too.
In Tarrnat's post, The Lord of the Rings Online™ Free Trial FAQ, at the top in the General Trial Questions, there are two links. One is to the download page where you can download the client (either standard or high resolution). The other is a link where you can create a Trial account (provided you have another email address). I suggest not creating a new Trial account until you get the client installed and working. You don't need an account to install the client.
Once the client is installed, launch it. It should update itself with the latest patches before getting to the login screen. Once it gets to the login screen, then you can create a new Trial account to log in with. This way you'll be able to get the most use out of the 10 days.
As for which client to download, if your system meets the recommended system requirements, you should be able to run the high resolution client in Very High or Ultra High mode. If your system meets the minimum requirements but not the recommended requirements, then download the standard resolution client, since you probably won't be running with the Ultra High settings and won't need the high resolution textures file (which is over 3GB in size).
Good luck, and let us know how it goes or if you have any other questions...
