    A Word on Hardware Improvements

Tuesday December 15th will be a big day for The Lord of the Rings Online™, as we complete our most substantial hardware upgrade since the game launched in North America in April 2007. This new server hardware gives us additional speed and capacity to support the growing world of Middle-earth, from the battles of Mirkwood to new Skirmishes across Eriador. It also provides the room to support the growing population of Middle-earth – there has been a huge response to the launch of Siege of Mirkwood™, and we are delighted to see both returning players and new explorers to the world. Thank you for your patience, and we look forward to opening the doors again once this transition is complete.

Actually what they're saying is that the "I lag too much" people were RIGHT!

We've been documenting various forms of server side lag for a long time on Landy and I cannot say how excited I am about an infrastructure upgrade to this game.

    Well done Turbine!

Finally, some unequivocal evidence to point to when "the sky is falling!" crowd starts spouting off nonsense. I wish Turbine would be less cryptic about the population numbers, but at least this shows that they really AREN'T declining.

Awesome! The hardware geek in me wants to know specifics, but I know that will never happen. Grats on the need to upgrade and hopefully this will open the door for more enhancements and possibilities in the future.

I know it won't soothe the inner geek but one of our Network Ops guys saw the spec sheet and his comment was, "Oh, wow!"

"Oh, wow!" means great surprise, but that can be in either direction.

Only if you're a rune-keeper and say it as "UNLIMITED POOOOWWWAAARRRR!!!" while using a lightning attack.

Does this mean we can actually pit a raid vs. raid in the moors? I hope so. Buggy NPCS + 2 Raids fighting = 4 to 5s skill lag, boring gameplay, no challenge.

I remember one time it was so bad that I ran out of TR past about 30 creeps, and ran all the way to GV with out being hit.

I was looking for more of a "It brings tears to my eyes", but I guess "Oh, Wow!" sounds pretty good as well.

    Boy are you easily impressed.

I have never seen an expansion that did not result in added playtime....look at your own playtime folks...it has bound to have at least doubled...more likely up by a factor of about 5....and of course there's also some that have come back to look at the new stuff, but I really doubt there's all that many new subscribers.

Still, very happy to see improved hardware, and hope the servers retain increased activity for a good long time, it's always more fun to have lots of folks around.

Why is it that when lag hits Freeps, they get to skirt by entire raids, but when lag hits Creeps, they freeze in place as dozens of Freeps start to load around them, die, then see all the red numbers fly overhead 5m later?

    Cool!

We don't have to do anything with out character I hope (make sure there is no mail, stuff on the AH, etc). I'm only asking because I remember that about server transfers in another game I played--although I guess it's not really the same.

    derailment

Hehe, I wonder what the server room at Turbine looks like anyway. For some reason, the ITs guys where I work think giving me a key to the server room and instructions on how to reboot things was a good idea. But every time I go that room with the retro drop ceiling and disco-raised floor, I can't help but think it looks like some kind of technology graveyard with old monitors, tumbleweeds of cords, keyboards, mouses...mice...whatever. It is a nice place to hang out at in the summer though (always nice and cool).

    /derailment

Anyway, I am looking forward to less lag and increased performance in general.

I too am curious about not only LOTRO's server room but any MMO's server setup.. I would like some pics to see the madness.. To me its like some mini-matrixy thing where our toons are all in these glassy pink-filled gooey cocoons jacked in!

Maybe even before and after shots... or maybe just "before" if "after" is propriety.
