Nice Fish Cadderly! What kind are they? Are they of impressive size for your area?

I live in Alaska where it's not really unusual to catch halibut weighing over 200 lbs and I've caught King Salmon over 80 lbs, but I've never been fishing anywhere else so I don't really know much about it.

EDIT: cute picture OCF, you look like a girl who goes to my church, she's always doing something shocking. She used to wear a cloak often, sometimes colored her hair, she is always a really funny and good to be around.

Those are 1-3 pounds best for eating at lunch time :P

Here's a picture of my grandfather with a 17pounds walleye has big it gets.

He's a tourist guide for fishing spot and has seen about 3 of that size in our area in a lifetime.

Just to say when I go fishing with him we never come back without full limit then we feast on the fish with onions and fries!!!

    That's just too cool man

My father is a fishing guide up here, so I get to go out just about whenever I please

Nothing like kicking back with some roast beef sandwiches, (or maybe some dry salami?) and casting a line.

How do you cook pike anyways? I've always heard they were really good but really boney.

nice, that's as big as some of the Ling Cod I've caught!

Incidently, you catch a lot of Ling's the same way you caught that fat pike... they just don't want to let go of a tasty rock fish once they get their teeth in

Man - if you ever get a chance to eat a Ling Cod don't pass it up! They have a very delicate flavor that I would place high above halibut. Black rock fish are in the same boat.

Pike are considered an evil fish in my area of Alaska because they compete with our salmon runs and are not native to the area, but some areas up north have some real monster pike. Seeing some of these pictures makes me want to go fish for them.

By and by, I've never heard of eating the liver out of a fish. How the heck do you prepare that?!

Oh, and I HAVE to know, how much did that monster weight?!

LOL sounds actually a lot like me a few years ago. At 32 I've mellowed a tiny bit, but I used to show up for work at a bank in a bodice and medieval dress. Amazingly, work didn't seem to care (and the people that went through the drive through that day did a double take when they found me standing there). Hah. But now that I work in software, we live in jeans and tshirts, so that's pretty normal for me now.

Dayam huge fish! I wanna go fishing now. Gotta find better fishing spots out here.

I had some friends that lived outside of Anchorage, what a BEAUTIFUL area! It's on the list of places to visit in the next 10 years.

Anchorage is beautiful? Man, you need to see Seward, Valdez, Homer, and the rest of the Kenai Pennisula. Which, incidently is my location.

Seward is a misty fishing village... a tiny town that seems to have been swallowed up by the high mountains surrounding it. Waterfalls, a very easy to get to glacier and if your brave, you can hike to see the Harting Ice Fields... A HUGE chunk of solid glacial ice that is large enough to cover some states.

Also, Fishing in seward you will see a fair amount of Bald Eagles (We Alaskans kinda think of them as really pretty buzzards they are so common up here), Fat Puffins, ect.

For marine mammals you'll see happy Sea Otters playing on the beaches. I once witnessed a fight between two male sea lions. They really can roar, rarely you'll see the kind Harbor Seal. They have silver speckled fur and large expressive eyes, occasionally they can be quite curious. I've seen a few humpback whales, which are currently so prolific up here they have prevented our herring population from rebounding. Orcas are also a common sight, Dad once had one so curious he actually had the fin approach the boat and then sink into the water... he watched the massive black shape glide stealthfully under the boat and resurface on the other side.

Belugas are almost a forgone conclusion. We have so many of them they are more like fish than whales. :P The are a smaller whale, but still seeing a pod of them chasing salmon across the waves is a spectacular sight.

Silver fishing in Seward isn't really Fishing... it's like participating in a feeding frenzy. Once the bite starts, the highly competitive Silver Salmon will aggressively pursue anything that even looks like bait. I've had them be fifty feet under the water and within a few minutes your looking around your boat at what appears to be water boiling as they have all come to surface in search of their comrades who are now flopping on the deck. They are such a greedy fish it's not uncommon for them to eat two baits, hook, line, and sinker before an unaware fisherman realizes he's got them on.

Silvers require the most Finesse to fish, they dance on top of the water, the torpedo under your boat, and honestly pound for pound they give the best fight, but if you want a BIG salmon (silvers range from 9-25+ lbs) you have to fish the Kenai River located near the town of Soldotna. Here you will find the massive Kenai King!

The Kenai king is unique in that it stays out at sea longer than any other king salmon. They hold the record for the largest salmon ever caught. 97 lbs 6 oz. caught by a friend of the family Les Anderson. He reciently passed away, but he actually claimed he caught a bigger one that he tossed back. The largest king I've personally caught was over 80 lbs and I'm quite proud of that.

The Kenai river is a great place to view ducks, eagles, artic terns, moose, and our thriving bear population. Soldotna is the closest thing you will get to a "shopping center" we actually have a Fred Meyers! Walmart is coming soon though, so that's where you'll wanna stock up on groceries before heading south down the sterling high way to where all the hippies from California go when they die. Homer, Alaska.

Homer is, like I said, a massive hippy commune. No one really knows why hippies insist on taking the most beautiful peices of land for themselves, but alas, what is true in the states is true in Alaska as well. Here you will find many gey art studios showcasing both decient, ******, and rarely talented art (the real art is usually by non-hippies, but don't tell them that. Hippies get angry when their world of illusion is threatened). Homer's economy is run completely on hummus, tofu, and political grants, so if you visit Homer, check out their Cathedral of a high school, never was so much public money spent so poorly. Most people who do not live in Homer wish they did, but realize that because of the over abundance of hippies they would eventually be forced to either grow long hair and wear tie-dye or retreat into the surrounding mountians.

This town is the home of the legendary Eagle lady, a women who has fed the eagles for so long generations upon generations of eagles have learned how to live on the massive man-made homer spit and survive soley on the scraps from her fishing nets. This has created both a problem and source of income as the lazy eagles of homer have taken to raiding garbages and live in the local parks. It's interesting but they display behaviors closely associated with homeless humans! So beware the lazy eagles of Homer.

If you can get past all the tie-dye, organic fruits, and hoop earrings (some of the alaskan hippies actually seem to fancy themselves as pirates or gypsies) you actually get out onto the beaches which can provide a lot of fun for kids. Some really great steamer clam beds allow for harvesting of a lot of the tasty morsels (cook them in white wine and fresh basil) and watch out for what we like to call, clam pirates.

Clam pirates are ancestors of the asian corsair. They moved to alaska, opened a chinese all you can eat buffet, and then realized they needed to stock the buffet. Clam pirates will dig massive trenches, visible from space, and take anything living that they run into. I once reported a group of clam pirates who had filled about fifteen gunny sacks of sea urchins, starfish, clams, limpit, baby octopus, and whatever else they figured was edible or could be dried and sold. Sometimes you will be walking along and look over to see a person attempting to dig to china on the beach. This is DEFINATELY a clam pirate, and you should report him immediately as he ran out of last month's supply of clams and needed more for his all-you-can-eat buffet. Don't speak to the claim pirate unless you are fluent in multiple asian languages because he's not going to be able to understand you.

Clam pirates become Land Pirates in the fall. They trade out their shovels for a rusty 12 gauge and go hunting for birds that really would rather be hit by a 24 gauge. they slaugher the once prolific, but now rare, Alaskan spruce hen. This bird once was a common sight in every back yard and was an easy meal since you can literally catch them in nets. Sadly, due to the bird being taken by clown car style Land Pirate hunting the standard alaskan has to really hunt hard to find them.

Luckily we have begun to deport the Clam Pirates over such things and they are starting to realize they cannot simply **** and pillage our natural resources and that they are going to simply have to leave a few to breed.

I'll post more later, if anyone wants to hear it. I love talking about home.

Tetrall thanks for the post! I'll definitely hit you up later for some more information. My soon-to-be brother-in-law is a big outdoorsman, and I grew up camping, fishing, etc. Alaska is on the to-do list. Are you still up there?
