wait a sec, is this for real? the "events" from the past TWO years now have failed and I missed out on both by a few hours?

(last year the servers crashed,. this year the in-game mail and title are broken)

No. The in-game mail this year was last year's event. It was not turned off in time, so the mail went out at midnight even though the quest is disabled. The in-game mail is NOT this year's event.
