Unfortunately, you see, there are a loooot of people who jump to conclusions about stuff.

The patch server's lagged under the launch-day demand? Then clearly it must be a bug brought on by shoddy code from lazy coders only out for money-grubbing WB, etc. etc.

    Seriously folks, relax.

Guess there's also a F2P player or two who never experienced a serious update on lotro before.

Just hang in there if you really want to play today or else come back in a few when the rush is gone

    Great Job !
Yes, it should be posted in the launcher to clearly state that the servers are offline and the already patched clients should be closed until told otherwise!

And then we had one of those massive surges of web traffic.

    And everything went down. HARD.

You can try your best to prepare for the unexpected - but the fact is, it's UNEXPECTED, and you can never be certain that what worked perfectly in testing will function just as well when dealing with Reality.

...That having been said: if what someone else said is correct - that the launcher is trying to connect to patch.lotro.com which is currently out of service - is patching really happening at this time at all? Or am I just stuck in the queue, and that's why I'm getting the out of service message? I'm still a bit confused on this, even after having read the entire thread.

My suggestion would be to put a sticky at the top of the forum, titled, "CAN'T CONNECT? READ THIS FIRST", detailing the most up-to-date news on the situation and pointing people to this thread. That way, at the very least, the rest of us can have fun mocking the people who can't understand those five words.
I wouldn't say it's unexpected. Who wouldn't expect it to take this long (as so many people are trying to access the patch server together)? Not really anything you can do about it.

Sapience, how is it that some people already patched up and some are still stuck at unable to connect? Is it dependant on IP adress so the load is kind of spreaded out?

the patch server probably has a limit on the number of concurrent sessions and we're currently beyond that.

But if your launcher, for whatever reason, is closed after finishing the patch, then you'll be back in the 'Connect Catastrophe' again.

OMG I have been waiting for 12 hours to try to connect and can't. NOBODY is doing anything about making it so I and only I am taken care of! I NEEDZ to be #1 on the game NOW!!! This NEVER has happened before now! I always am able to get my expansion withing 2.5 seconds of clicking on my icon!!!!!

Oh Wait.. you mean there are other people out there too!?!? I thought LoTRO was made just for me! lets all show a little patience because EVERY time there is a new release there are backups in the system. I think it is awesome that they are getting things going A DAY EARLY! Every time there is an update, expansion, patch or even maintenance we see the same thing... people fearing that Turbine is out to get them! Well, they aren't, they are people like the rest of us trying to deliver for their customers. Technology is only so good.

Help I am having a big problem also. I am in the US and can't get past connect to examine programs. Just keeps saying a connect attempt failed and 60 sec to retry over and over again.

What is wrong. Does this mean I need to resinstall the whole game again. Twitter is worthless. They only care about a stupid contest.

Anyway is anyone else have this connect problem????? my internet is fine. LOL i am on this so it is working.

side note the patch servers came up briefly at 9-10 am this morning UK time and again 3 pm-4 pm time for about 20 min or so before what can only be crashing.

No, I didn't browse both forums. Did I ever see more than a handful of complaints with problems patching? No. Now there's a thread with 600+ replies(Some duplicates, so let's assume half are having problems?) and 10-15 people have been in and out of vent and are having the same issue.

I would assume there was not hundreds of problems with every patch on the EU servers. It's getting a tad annoying that we have no real fix for the issue we're having besides "Hang on and restart your launcher(Which rarely seems to be working) and no real time line for fixes or the servers coming up.

The only real excuse for it I can see is Turbine is handling the load of both EU and NA players now, which I do not believe they had to do in the past as codemasters servers handled EU? Perhaps I'm wrong. If that's the case, it should have been prepared for imo, but at least it's a semi-valid reason.

Sapience's answers should really be extracted and stickied in a new post for the time being - having them interlaced in this potential threadnought is ensuring they aren't reaching the intended audience.

Perhaps this should posted on the 'news' portion of the launcher.

Additionally, attempting to hit https://gls-auth.lotro.com/GLS.AuthServer/ from our launcher shouldn't really be touching 'patch.lotro.com' should it?, Can we feel free to periodically hit the 'login' button and let it do our 2 retries? (They're 2 different servers, judging by the different external IPs at least.)

reason why eu players are here commenting is most likely couse its Night here when its 1pm Usa its 21.00pm here in Eu

I am one of those who still can't connect due to the high load. Should I keep the client up trying to connect by itself or restart the client often?

Majority of us are having this issue, you have to just be patient and wait like the rest of us. Restart your client every so often and you might just get lucky and patched up

I'm still unable to connect, I've been trying repeatedly on three computers, and all three are getting "An update error occurred: A connection attempt failed."
