Well..I finally got something different. It said Downloading EN/DN something or the other splash screens. Did that for a few seconds, got my hopes up and then went back to ," A connection attempt failed." Can't even muster the energy to be angry or sad about it :P.

The assumption you make is indeed incorrect. If you were in the know at the time, you would know the guy also coded an Atari ST version.

I also know perfectly well that concurrent connections are NOT "effectively unlimited if you're willing to spend enough money", as you stated in the quoted post.

Yes, there are things Turbine could have done that would have (slightly) improved the patching experience. They could have purchased the hardware upgrades for the patch servers that would have allowed more concurrent connections. That's a non-trivial exercise....adding something like that into your platform is a pretty weighty project; anybody thinking it's a matter of buying the device, plugiing it in, hokking it up, and rocking, is woefully misinformed.

Should they have done that? That's a business decision, comparing the cost of the hardware and the project time against the risk of having customers wait an additional few hours to patch. The patch issue occurs only...what, every expansion, so every year or so? More if there's a major, highly-anticipated patch between expansions?

You might not care for the business decsion that was made, and that's fair and all, but I'm not going to fault them for putting THAT money into servers that see use that seldom. The few extra hours saved patching once a year or so isn't worth it, and I'd consider any company that paid that expense to be a little irresponsible with their resources.
The forums are not an accurate representation of the thoughts and feelings of the whole player base. Those who like a particular feature are in the game enjoying that feature. Those who don't like it log out to mention it on the forums. It is a relevant but biased source of feedback, and any claims of community desire should take this fact into account.

Thanks for the response Sapience.....so does this mean that if we patched earlier, and apparently stupidly closed the window after realizing the login servers were down, that being stuck at the connection failed 60 sec retries is the more or less 'right' place to be until our spot in the queue moves up?

Thanks again for your work today.

The real slap in the face is that I'm an out of work game artist, one of your own kind! I've been out of work for almost a year now, and today, instead of playing the game (f2p, and haven't bought RoI since I have no job) I actually worked on my portfolio and tried to get a job. I can't believe how you treat people that haven't given you money. You just take my un-earned, non-money and give me extra content early for all I care, I'm sure there are plenty of other games that would be glad for me to not give them money.

If this doesn't get resolved before this evening, and I have to spend quality time with my wife, so help me god...

7 hours in now, and still not been able to even start the patch download. Stuck at the red X.

A lot of people seem to be stuck the same place I am.

Why has not more resources been set aside for this?

Turbine - thanks for your great job! I don't mind if i don't get in until tomorrow, I'm off to bed soon anyway.
And as numerous others have said, it wasn't one day before launch, they changed the launch date and officially said so on these forums.

I'm guessing: in an attempt to avoid the amount of player angst that's spinning this thread?
Just the opposite (which is why it makes no sense). The whole point of patching before the live date is so that all of this is taken care of and the game is running smoothly for everyone before the launch. Then there's no updating on launch day (at least for most people) so the launch is a smooth matter of just turning on access. By launching today, they've put the launch on the day that everyone is still fighting the hassle of trying to patch. They've completely eliminated all the benefit that today's patching was supposed to provide.

So is it still normal not to be able to patch hours after the live announcement? Anything we can do or are we just going to have to wait or restart the client every couple seconds? This is crazy its after 3pm eastern and the servers are STILL unable to handle the load? Seriously?

Guess most have to wait for patchers to let others log into game, If thats the case, its very poorly implemented Sapience :/
Exactly that is what turbine has done.

Why have these servers only been allocated in the evening? and not earlier in preparation ?
The servers now for patching are probably the ones needed for the patched clients to login - so exactly as you say we have a ridiculous circle of #### service.

I understand it points to that, I tried it myself and saw that. I have not modified, I am just trying to give them additional feedback so that they can know or see WHY many people are getting failure Connects. I can only assume it's some load balance that's redirecting due to high load, but I have been patching this game for years, and never had this type of issue even on super heavy load days, so it seems something isn't right to me..

I am stuck too.... Just thought I would say that cause for some time I could not find out if the problem was something only I was experiencing or common to others. Now that I found that it's a known issue it is a bit more bearable. Turbine should really make a post in the patcher to let people know they are working on this issue.
