Calling it "minimum cost" is more than a little disingenuous.

The software for whatever you need those failover servers to do has to be installed on the servers ahead of time....you don't just automagically hook up those servers and get automagic extra capacity. That costs money, as the 3rd party won't let your stuff just sit on their servers for free. Those additional servers also have to be worked into your failover infrastructure (that is, the routing to them, allocation of which servers take over which functions for which primaries, load-balancing among all of the above, etc). That process is also not free.

COULD all of those things have been done? Of course. Was the cost to do so acceptable, given the financial risk involved in you waiting an extra few hours to patch? I dunno, and neither do you...neither of us writes contracts for Turbine, neither of us can say what this is realistically likely to cost them in lost revenue.

I'll say it again: 100% flawless implementation and redundancy, resulting in 100% 24/7/365 stability, even during major updates, is a constantly-moving target that NOBODY ever truly hits. Anybody who tells you differently is probably a vendor trying to sell you something.

I was stuck on the Examine Game Data for the longest time. Finally I just shut it down and brought it back up to see if it would have any effect. It reconnected once or twice and then immediately went into the patch. Patching now.
    Good luck guys.

There's a point beyond the ridiculous here...

Yes a "LOT" of folks are trying to connect... DOH

Didn't they COUNT the pre-orders they got? Didn't they count the dollars they received?

Not hard to figure out how many are going to "BANG ON THE SERVERS"...

What is not hard to figure out that saving $NN in getting more servers/bandwidth (temporary) was more important to Turbine/Warner. You'd even think they would put something like that in the Store? OH... THEY DID! I bought it and .... well....

Whoever says “I” creates the “you.” Such is the trap of every conscience. The “I” signifies both solitude and rejection of solitude. Words name things and then replace them. Whoever says tomorrow, denies it. Tomorrow exists only for him who does not seek it. And yesterday? Yesterday is Kolvillàg: a name to forget, a word already forgotten.

If you are a pasty skinned basement dweller like me, get on Vent/Skype/The Comms you like and rage with your friends. It's only a game. Patch Day for WoW, Eve Online, Everquest and ever DAoC was the same. Some people could get in, some couldn't. Some felt compelled to post long missives questioning the intelligence of the Devs, some found it amusing.

I've every confidence that someone will take me to task about how stupid I am or that I am some sort of Turbine apologist. It's cool. If it helps you and makes you feel better, take your best shot.

Meanwhile, I'll have the client open and waiting to patch, while I read the forums, maybe catch something on Hulu.

    Enjoy your day, gentlefolk.

Yea, these forums are great way to pass the time with all the comments. Just like the HP Touchpad thread on Slickdeals.

Good luck to all those patching, I'll be waiting a little while before doing so - I recall a most unfortunate incident in an old update that Eve Online went through, whereby the update modified the windows boot.ini rather than the games boot.ini file. If memory serves, this was only an issue for those using vista, but it caused a lot of people who restarted before the issue was fixed to have a corrupt O/S install.

Since then, I've avoided any major update for a good few hours or a day at least, just incase..

    Just..incase.

I am not angry. I am just extremely disappointed in Turbine. They have had months to prepare for this start up and yet it has turned into a major fiasco. I have been trying to get the update for over four hours now. I really feel that someone in authority needs to make some kind of statement to the customers on what is happening and when/if the problems will be resolved. I certainly don't want to be sitting here in Wednesday, Thursday or even Friday still trying to get the game patched and back to playing.

Well - it's not a queue issue. Main PC been auto-repeat login for 5 hours. Started gaming netbook 30 minutes ago and it's patching.

The issue isn't that I can't download and play RoI a day early, it's that I can't play LotRO at all.

I would like to make the suggestion that you get back to doing the pre-loads for future expansions and large updates.
Problem was most of the people who installed the pre patches didn't have the common sense to read the instructions. Sure they worked, but sometimes with more of a headache than waiting patiently.

SO sad... I make it through the entire loading process get on and play for less then an hour and the client crashes. So now I guess back to the end of the line.... I feel that there should maybe be a way to get in with out spending hours waiting for those on the servers to load the update when I have already loaded the update

Well from CM there were usually a stand alone patcher available a couple of days early so you could pre-patch the game. And I never had an issue connecting to the patch servers one the game was patched! Living on Sweden I seldom had over 20 minutes of patching at any given patch day anyways.. even when I was to lazy to download the stand alone patcher.

I'd say what is driving people insane is that you get the funny error message "A connection attemt failed." o.. ffs try again then! and why lock it to 60 seconds.. put in a random rumber btw 60 and 70 at least so people start getting in on random slots at least..

u start utorrent u press make new torrent u put ur Lotro folder with isengard on it and u say UPLOAD!!!!!

Remember everyone the patchers and game is working fine. Exactly as expected. Here I am 8 hours later being told restart your client. No wait dont restart your client. No wait ya restart it. Just crazy Id like to see one company one day actually launch something that works.
