    Hofix changes¿

    Hotfix
We could go round and round for hours about the meaning of hotfix, but the only thing that matters here is how we use it when messaging downtime and changes to you, the players. For us, this is usually a change to the game (though it can also be a change to a misbehaving back end system). It can either be server side (no download) or client side (your client will update and patch), depending on what it is we’re fixing. For server side fixes you usually will not see patch or release notes.
For a client side hotfix you’ll usually get notes or some other notice of what is being addressed. Hotfixes are always small. We use hotfixes to address issues the team sees as urgent (completely closed or blocked content is usually a good hotfix candidate). The number of items addressed in a hotfix is extremely limited. Often it is a single, highly critical item. Items that do not meet our criteria for a hotfix are considered for a …
So a hotfix means something's going to change. Anyone knows what is it?

    I think...

Someone from Turbine should simply provide a paragraph about what is actually going on during each downtime.

It's just basic customer service after all.

Is it really that hard, to give people a paragraph to let them know what is actually occurring? Why is it always this huge hush-hush secret thing, that people have to wring a sentence or two out of someone after a half dozen different threads, and pages upon pages of comments come out speculating what the changes are going to be.

This is, at it's base, simply poor customer service.

And after running more than one help desk the past decade, I know what customer service is. You need to do better folks. And you can start, by informing your customers a bit better, with simple things such as this. It simply increases the image and professionalism of your company, and lets the players/customers know that you care.

And best of all... it costs you NOTHING.

Just repeat after me... "The customer is always right..."

It's probably just adding another loading screen advertising the newest shiny thing in the shop

Or it will be an exploit of some kind that needs to be fixed - in which case they won't tell us about it until after they have fixed it.

It's exactly what it says on the tin.

It's the first set of fixes deployed since Isengard, which will fix some, but not all, of the bugs which have cropped up. This is normal practice after a large release.

However, one hopes that the insane lag in the Galtrev area is one thing that might be addressed if that's possible. If not, I might have to content myself with leveling an alt until the land rush is over. Thing was nearly unplayable last night.

There will be patch notes. Based on history, they will appear shortly.

edit: The above is wrong. But wow, giving negative rep for wrong, somebody obviously has bizarre interpretation of their -rep powers...

I think hotfix and patch are possibly different things? Hotfix I usually think of as being small and addressing only one or two game breaking issues. A patch I would expect to do much more and to take much longer to produce than a week.

I didn't say "PATCH NOTES NOW! IT'S AN ORDER!" and I said please. What's your problem again?

Thing is, most MMO companies, when they hotfix, release a short note with the duration (e.g. worlds will be down from 8am to 10am) and the fixes done. And if it's an exploit fix, they will also say it, even if they don't give any details. It's basic communication from a company with its customers.

Aye would be nice, it melts my poor laptop.

I have a feeling it's linked to the NPC density. There are two things which cause slowdown even on my pretty beastly main PC, very long distance draw on frills in the Dunbog and anything with a huge number of NPCs (see the Dunbog cluster and the meeting instance in the same place).

I'm hoping if they remove some pointless NPCs from Galtrev and give the central suppliers/provisioners/healers and legendary weapon npcs their own little hut then it should help the problem immensely.

Once upon a time I wrote a little note explaining exactly what Hotfix, patch, update, etc mean. It's in my sig under "I don't think it means what you think it means". The important part is here:

    Hotfix
We could go round and round for hours about the meaning of hotfix, but the only thing that matters here is how we use it when messaging downtime and changes to you, the players. For us, this is usually a change to the game. It can either be server side (no download) or client side (your client will update and patch), depending on what it is we’re fixing. For server side fixes you usually will not see patch or release notes. This is because they usually involve server stability or some other tuning type tweaks.

For a client side hotfix you’ll get notes, but they are always small. We use hotfixes to address issues the team sees as urgent (completely closed or blocked content is usually a good hotfix candidate). A hotfix is almost always smaller than a dozen items. Often it’s only a small handful of changes.

Today's hotfix is server side only. It's to address stability and some lag issues.

    Re: Hofix changes¿

Usually with a hotfix to game mechanics they say in the hotfix announcement what they are fixing. This one has none, so it may have to do with something on the back end that isn't supposed to be general knowledge (e.g., security issues). It could also be that they aren't sure it will actually fix the issue, so why get people's hopes up. Oh wait, that could NEVER happen with Turbine!

I am personally hoping for lag fixes. Having a lot of hitching lately. Course, that was happening before the expansion, but what wasn't happening was the load icon.

    Edit: Sapience, cut that out!

Cheers! Now if you would add a duration info - or an ETA for servers being back up, it would be perfect. You know, like other MMO devs do when they patch...

Downtime is given in the client, servers should be back up around 10am EST

10:00am US Eastern time is currently -4 GMT, so my guess is more like 02:00pm (14:00) in the land of GMT (and Tolkien)

I was hoping we were being issued with Tazars (sic?) so we could stun the stun before we gets stunded.

On the other hand, lag is like being stunded all the time.
