and how did you get 210 gold boxes if they only give you one a week ?
After you open your daily free silver present, you can pay 2 Mithril Coins each (approximately 20 cents) to open as many more as you want.

After opening your free weekly VIP gold present, you can pay 8 Mithril Coins each (approximately 80 cents) to open more. Anyone can pay 8 coins to open them, you don't have to be VIP. VIPs just get one free each week.

If you don't have any Mithril Coins, the text on the buttons changes to "Get more Mithril Coins" and opens directly to the Mithril Coins category in the LOTRO Store.

Interestingly enough, I haven't seen any hobbit presents on any of my characters since the first time they appeared (when was that? First day of the anniversary? A while ago anyway). And I'm a lifetimer.

I do not feel desperately deprived about this, because the first couple of things I did get were absolutely useless. But can someone explain the mechanism to me, just for my curiosity?

Its always risky reading to much into changes ... but in this case I will take the risk.. One of the main stats being used in the Internet World is daily visitors. As a result you see many sites/games trying to incent you to visit the sight at least once per day.

You can't blame the sites/gaming companies for needing to play along with this although its less obvious in the case of LOTRO since there is no advertising revenue. But there is a lot of research that shows if you can increase your daily unique logins you will drive up revenue.

So .. you can expect this stuff from more and more games -- especially in phone APP environments.

    *sigh*

Of course I could be wrong...

Hobbit Presents launch with Update 11. This is basically a login reward. The first time you log in per 24 hr period, you will receive a random silver reward. We also have gold rewards that you receive once per week. In each case, you can purchase additional random silver and gold rewards with Mithril through the same UI.

They're not part of the game yet. You'll see them every day starting on Monday when Update 11 is released.
