Turbine Interview With Quality Assurance Director Jay Piette

Something I thought you might all enjoy. It's got a section where it gives a glimpse of how the development process comes together, and there's some other cool tidbits for just Turbine Fans along the way.

The page you are looking for could not be found.

It adds some irony to a thread that contains both "Turbine" and "Q&A"

    Nvm, here it is

There's a lot of good information in that interview which should help people hoping to get their break in the gaming industry.

Thanks for posting this, I always enjoy a peek behind the scenes.
The fact that they see every bug report is cool, what's not cool is the couple I sent in and then realized that they were WAI.

I've seen Jay give that speech live!

Twice each summer we host a local group of teens interested in breaking into the games industry. Jay, several producers, engineers, devlopers, and myself give about a 20 minute 'what the job is' talk and then another 10-15 each of Q&A. And having sat through everyone's at least once I can honestly say all of us say the exact same thing about getting into the industry.

The best way to get a job in the games industry is to get a job in the games industry. ANY job. Just get in the door.

20minutes each? It'd certainly make something interesting to see up on youtube somewhere by the various team members if its a speech you're giving anyway.

Yeah same here, great video! Was nice to hear that there's lots of advancement opportunities and transitions between departments available in gaming.

... just not in graphic design, unless you want it to be short lived.

He talked extensively about Turbine and talked mainly about Lotro which was cool. It gave great little insights into how Q&A works and why bugs slip through.

As soon as I saw the video I realized I knew Jay Piette's evil twin.

    Here's Jay:

Here's Jay's evil twin (no, not me, just someone I know):

And the evil twin at 50... this is what Jay has to look forward to

Well now I kind of have to send this thread to Jay. It's entered epic territory.

I just watched Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and was thinking how much Jay looks like Jimmy...

    Wow, great interview!

Thanks for posting this. This interview gave a wonderful insight into the gaming industry. And it certainly gave a lot of insight into the QA of Turbine (and of course Lotro in particular!)

There should be more interviews like this posted here!

thx so much for this link he looks, sounds, acts like a genuanly cool guy!

but anyway, I'm actually currently in the working of *hopefully* getting into the industry. but I've gone the wrong path to begin. feel almost scammed to have gone into an online games development course with the way it's currently working (I do my work, wait for weeks for them to read it, not quite working well). so just recently being the bum I am, got off my #### and am going for/close to an IT apprenticeship into either software or hardware (many of which have been QA). with my somewhat small knowledge of helping a few other games bug test in both alpha, beta and live games (Legions: overdrive if you've played it, that game is a twitch shooters dream next to tribes. but it released with some horrible bugs).

so this video gives me hope ^_^

online games mostly too like jay. something about trying to please the masses, balance stuff. super challanging stuff. you can write/read massive books on making online/PvP games for players, but players are weird. who though TF2 hats would work? who thought Sims would work?

weird stuff. and for the QA team, how the heck do they know what works and what doesn't without extensive playtests XD bug fixing is one thing, making sure it's actually fun is another

because I found this so good, I'll go and compare him to gabe and link you a video (sorry, I know he gets his back-side kissed enough, and it's huge, but he is interesting) and at a point I like that shows something most people don't realize.

    "burglers not annoyed"
    - hint at class revamp :P 2hour addle cooldown ^_^

also, is jay one of the "unnaed" people we see on here, like sapience isn't his real name. like is he one of those. ofc don't want personal details, just curious if he does pop in nown and then.

Just watched the interview. Found it very interesting. Would recommend it to anyone who has a bit of an interest in what goes on behind the scenes. It's given me alot more respect for the people that work at Turbine. Jay Piette seems like a great guy.

And from the original tweet that got me to the interview in the first place, I now know that 'Javatar' in the Tavern skirmish camp is likely a tribute to this fellow.

I wondered if he's shown up at any of the end of Beta events under a name some of us might recognize =)

./toast Here's to the QA team, and all those issues that they manage to hold back from launch, at least for a while.
