But if the grocery store puts a sign on the door saying, "Hey, we've encountered some stocking issues. We'll be open in a bit, but we have no ETA right now. If you'd like to, come to our Facebook page and we'll try to keep you updated to the best of your ability."

Another thing. This is a BIG one. Unless there is a message on the launcher saying, "All Worlds are now open! See you in game!" and it's right after a scheduled maintenance, ALWAYS check the Facebook page before logging in.

When Turbine finishes a downtime of any sorts, they always put that "All worlds are now open" message in the launcher. If it's not there, then the servers are probably still down. Cheers!

This is just pure derpery right here.

No, I don't have it figured out. That's not what I do. But I'm pretty sure they could pay someone to figure out how to recode their launcher to function independently without requiring the servers to be up/available. In fact, LOTRO is the only MMO that I've played that has it's launcher tied to it's forums. Maybe back in 2007 when it was launched, it was a good idea to have them tied together. Now, it's not so great of an idea, and should be updated. That's all I'm saying, so let's not go off the deep end here.

Minimally, when you go to log in, you should get an accurate error message of why you cannot log in, that is easily understandable and common sense. This would save people a lot of trouble, and save Turbine a lot of hate, would it not?
Now this would be possible. But as the launcher is currently setup ( keep in mind its still stuck in the 07 days ) its not possible to do that. But if they change how the launcher works for example they can change the .xml or .rss feed location to a different server so they will always have access to it. ( type or thing that other games have ) the part of the accurate error messages is simply the lack of progrmaing on the launcher side of things. If turbine was to setup a "Fake Message" that would be displayed instead of the real message for example if the launcher reads that the server is throwing the error "Servers are currently offline x39" the message that you would see would say " Server a currently offline. Please check back later" . Basically its a simple little cover up for the real message. Thats what other games are doing. so they just never added that function in the launcher.

Once again, server maintenance, an ostensibly simple activity, gets royally screwed up.

Now, if it isn't simple "maintenance", don't call it that. People (like me) have certain expectations when an activity is called "maintenance". You guys should do a better job of setting the expectations of your clients/customers (us).

Perhaps, you should post some intelligent explanation of what happened, or what you think happened. Even that might help with our expectations.

Otherwise, based upon how many times you have screwed up simple maintenance, we might draw the conclusion you are just a bunch of clowns.

So, you see, it's not simple "maintenance". It's "...prep work for our larger global datacenter move. This work is being done across all franchises and systems".

You see, our expectation can now be that this is a big deal for you guys, not simple maintenance, and we should be patient.

And I thought you took us off the deep end a while ago with multiple posts calling the situation ''ridiculous'', stating that multiple ''prayers'' are part of your suggested login routine, or posting to complain that you "got all the way to username and pw" before seeing maintenance was still ongoing. Typed in a password? So much effort! Sounds exhausting.
Obviously numerous posts about the "ridiculous" situation is warranted! Instead of just googling the phrase ''lotro twitter''. Yup, I'm the one deep in the derpery.

Sounds like a test run to me.

i.e. catalog and dismantle the server room, then re-assemble and check systems and databases according to the guidelines and procedures for the move.

Odd how SO many people FORESAW it but Turbine could not take a copy of their server/s and do the maintenanace on the copy to reduce risk...
My guess is - they will use the same excuse they used for the 9 hours became 16 (or was it more) which was
"we had several RAID systems fail" or some such tosh.

Also curious why server maintenence has to happen to USA based and Europe based servers at the same time...
As they cannot transfer characters between USA and EU why do they have to be 'maintained' at the same time? Or are they trying to balance the differences? If they were doing that I would accept issues and delays (I've worked on data migration between disparate database systems for huge companies myself here in the UK - once or twice)

I'm hoping they tell us why (truthfully)
I'm hoping they keep us up to date on FORUM often - twitter is for kiddies (or grown ups that would like to be) and I'm not either.
Facebook is for corporate wealth - not my wealth or even Turbine's wealth (maybe - FB pays many companies for FB being able to collect data - EA must be in that pie-eating group I imagine)

I repeat - "unforeseen" ? why? what is the issue that you didn't see coming? why can we not know?

The servers are all in the same location so it makes zero sense to update them separately. And what the heck does the inability to transfer characters between US and EU have to do with a server farm maintenance?

Haven't you ever planned something out and then not had it go as expected? It's not like Turbine is the sole proprietor of unforseen circumstances!

It's close to midnight, and something's lurking right behind the launcher - time to fight!

    Really?
Harware folks worked there hours and went off home and other hardware folks had to come in and start fixing it.
Liaison guy turns up an hour AFTER the 9 hours shut down and posts a single message providing no info other than "not yet working"

Congrats to the fixers of the issue - not all Turbine did things well here...

The point is that if one has a question, realize that many such questions have been asked in the past. Go find it.
I don't pay a monthly fee PLUS more money in the store to be told to go search for an answer that can easily be provided along with maintenance messages. It's called "good customer service", and is usually done by companies who want to be profitable as well as maintain and grow their customer base. "Go look it up yourself" is the same as saying "I don't want your money".
