I have worked in server rooms and I never seen down time any were this long

I've worked on business application releases that had data refactoring where things did not go to plan and had downtime across an entire weekend. As with everything in life, stuff happens, someone mistypes a statement into a command line or fails to notice an error before proceeding with the next step in the sequence etc etc. The longest actual system outage that I've worked on to help resolve took place across business hours was back in 1999 over 3 days due to recovery part of "backup and recovery" not having been properly tested before it was required.

It would be nice if we could get a general idea as to when maintenance might be done, so that we don't waste our time waiting for something that might not even happen!

Another tweet from DDO's twitter @ddounlimited, which extends the downtime with another two hours, i.e their servers are now estimated to open in 2 hours and 5-10minutes, which is a good indication that there is still work to do. Still puzzled at the fact that DDO community managers have more information to work with but, yea I guess Turbine have priorities.

The downtime has been extended until 6:00 PM Eastern (-4 GMT). We will keep you updated.

It is an estimate. You are not saying "The servers will be back in exactly five minutes and 33 seconds. People, at least the community is smart enough to understand when something is an estimate, especially if you say that things might change and it is not completely sure. Things happen, we understand that. But is making people, especially those in EU where it is peak time to play and making them wait and check every 5 minute on twitter/throuhg launcher better? See, the DDOs announcement is pretty good, provides an estimate and you know that at least in the next hour/hour and half it is almost guaranteed that the servers won't be ready to play and you can focus on something else. Those people will come in a hour/hour and half and will see a update on twitter/FB or launcher and will know whether it will be ready or there will be more downtime.

Is that so much to ask?

I'm guessing a lot of people want to create characters on servers that are likely to close, to transfer them to their current server to get names from inactive accounts.

Also a lot of dailies to be completed for summer festival tokens for those who want to get all consumables/races/fishing done

I think people are mostly getting upset because Turbine rejects to share information that is apparantly available for the ETA(twitter.com/ddounlimited for proof). People are annoyed because it is always EU that gets the short stick with the updates/maintenances and eventually people are losing a day of their VIP subscribtion as well and they will not receive an extension to it. People are upset because organized kinship groups/events can't happen.

Can I point out that many people have had a long day at work. They've spent the whole day talking to people 'for reals', possibly in jobs they don't enjoy very much and maybe would like to relax by playing their favourite game.

In fact, most gamers DON'T still live in their parents houses.

I realise patience is required in these circumstances but I don't think asking when the game is going to be back up is so terrible.

really? i got sick of it after years in guildwars 1 after Gw 2 came out "GW is gonna die" and then they set it on automation, and then AGAIN they went "GW will die"
sure, they barely do anything with GW anymore, but it never died, still is active, you just need an active guild to have fun with others, but other thasn that, its alive enough

as for lotro.... nah, it wont die only cuz the maintanance is bigger than expected

They're doing free transfers off the servers that'll be closing. There's alot of info in another thread, but other than possible name conflicts it doesn't seem like it'll be a complete horror. If you check, there's another thread with a whole bunch of info on it that Lotro's producer has been posting in today.

I just wanted to say thank you for at last letting us know why the servers where down so long. It would have kept a lot of people clam had they known that there was a move involved. Not sure why everything has to be kept a secret. As for my self I thought that was happening. I do hope everyone is able to relax some what today.
