My solution to this problem was to leave the naming system as it is right now (and that is what I always thought it would be), but add the option that a player needs to complete the intro, and become "Novice" rank before it can reserve the name. Someone that is serious about certain names would have taken the time to create characters and level them up out of the intro. A "name claim troll" would not do that, they just want to create names, move on, see who else they can mess with. They don't want to take the time.

Unfortunatly Vyvyanne has said that this would be hard to do, the naming conflict system does not have the ability to distinguish between players completing the intro and those who have not.

The naming system is what it is now. It went live with the August 3d patch, and will be used as-is. There will be no changes to it anymore, that ship has sailed. They are certainly not going to halt all progress made so far to go back to the drawing board and stop the current schedule to develop something new.
It is still a sad and poor decision, because the way the naming conflicts are handled now is disrespectful for the long-time-playing and long-term-paying players. It's not only a question of a timeline of 6 months; the closing servers were announced just recently. Details to the new naming rules were officially announced recently. And the way the naming conflict are handled now will only encourage those trolls out there. I can somehow live with the current decision, but it's a sure way to create grief and disappointment.

While I accept that there are players that don't care about their names, there are also players who very carefully selected their toon names and are identified with those names. Some people spend thorough consideration before entering something into the name field. Some may even selected their names because of a special meaning, based on linguistic relationship or other factors.

This is definitely not the case. What exactly is "equal" with regard to names, if the lvl 1 char created 1 hour ago on the remaining world has the higher priority than the one created 3 years ago, but happens to be on the server that's going go be closed? I know I have a strong sense of justice, and I have arranged myself with the decision, but I know people on my server that will be stronlgy disappointed, additionally fearing, that their old names are going to be dragged through the mire by some of those trolls.

Anyhow, as you said, the decision has been made and the ship has sailed. However, that doesn't mean everyone of the crew has to be happy about the course. Especially when knowing there are some dangers ahead that could have been avoided.

You always talk about "trolls" when bringing up lvl 1 chars that were just created.
I created new chars on my destination server to save the names for myself. My server is 5th in line to transfer, on some of the servers transfering before me, the name of my mainchar was already taken. But I will be the one to use the name on the destination server, because I saved it. Am I a troll now? Or am I just well prepared?

    Ok hgere is my question

I have a toon named Tombud on Server A
I also have a Tombud on Server B
When transfers begin I want to merge all my toons onto Server C (I have the available slots for it)
Since I have both Tombuds will either of them get the rename for free? Or will I be forced to pay or deal with the -1 after my name.

You obviously have prepared yourself well. And you propably have been lucky. The concept demanded doing what you did. There could have been conditions / parameters that would have prevented the need to reserve your char names on the other server(s). I know of other cases on my server where the trolls have won. Unfortunately.

I know it shouldn't amaze me at this stage of my life, but I am amazed at the number of people in the world who feel what's "fair" is what best suits their interests. There was nothing fair or unfair about the decisions that Turbine had to make. We are impacted by decisions beyond our control every single day of our lives. The sooner you understand that and learn to adapt to these decisions, the happier you will be, trust me. I say this not to preach, but to offer advice from my own life experiences. You can choose to adapt however you please. Maybe you'll find a new game and be happier. Maybe you'll find a new name. Maybe you'll be fine with a -1 name. Maybe your new server will introduce you to a whole new way of playing LOTRO that you didn't get to experience on your old server. Maybe. I can say with certainty, if you choose to dwell on this decision that has been made beyond your control, you won't be happy. If you can't adapt to a change within LOTRO, which is (hopefully) a minor part of your life, then you've got more disappointment awaiting you in the real world, I'm afraid.

42 pages later and people are still making this stupid argument... If the name was taken 6 months ago by someone who hasn't logged in since 2009, where was my chance there? Now some level 1 on one of the sunsetting worlds before me could transfer their toon and claim my name, where their toon might very well sit inactive for another 6 years. There is nothing fair about that.

You could have created a character on every world with your desired names, you'd likely get 1 on one of these sunsetting servers and transfer your own lvl 1 -- if names are such a big deal to you. There's no perfect way to do this, Turbine have elected to use a simple system, which likely isn't wrong given you will definitely have plenty of people unhappy with the result.

Why do you need to turn this into a personal attack? You don't know anything about my life, yet you assume that I have the idea of "fair" being "what best suits my interest". I have arranged with multiple bad decisions or experiences concerning my life. Yet you assume I don't have ways to handle those situations. And while we are being impacted by uncomfortable decisions made "above our heads" that doesn't necessarily mean we have to "adapt" (at least not for me). I have my own perspective and don't align it to a decision from another person I don't agree with. "Maybe" is lot of speculation - based on what exactly are all your assumptions? In this stage of your life I wonder that statements based on observations and developing a personal perspective from them are a lack of adaptility in your eyes.

Assuming there is no other Tombud on server C - whichever Tombud you transfer first will keep his name. The second one will run into the name conflict and gets a -1 added and the rename token. It's your decision which character you want to stay Tombud and which you want to rename.

Yes, as history has taught us on numerous occasions... We should just accept that whatever we believe to be unfair is also immutable, and make no effort whatsoever to voice our opinion about it...

Not Excited about transfering my characters

Sorry if this has been answered but I searched the thread and could not find the answer.

Since the renaming token does not expire can I just leave the -1 so I can keep my name an play the character with the -1 on it?

If I transfer a character to Landroval the RP server and the name is already taken can I just leave the name with the -1 ? Not sure what the RP naming rules are with numbers.

Changing the character name will make me not to want to play the character. Yes I am invested in my character names. Forcing me to change them makes me not to want to play the character anymore because they have lost their identity. The -1 would not bother me as I still have the main character name intact. If I have to rename but can just add a number to the end of it, I can deal with that too.

Thanks in advance for the answers.

You do not HAVE to rename. You can keep the -1 if you don't mind that. I doubt that it will cause problems on a RP server. After all you still have your lore conform name (never mind the -1).

I think you are going to hear a lot of Meneldor players, who are last in line to migrate, complain about that.... they are already last to wait, they may have made some F2P accounts to make placeholders, especially if they need to combine toons from multiple servers and don't have the slots for all toons already..... and they will then see their names picked up one by one?

    Hmmm... not a good idea
Well, creating placeholders for chars that legitimately have a claim to the name is another issue. That issue exists because of the way Turbine has decided to the do the transfers, spread out over time by server. If it was a level playing field, then no 'placeholder' should have a claim to a name, and everyone should be able to transfer at the same time. The name would then go to the first to legitimately lay claim to it. Your claim should be based on your long term chars who are on a server being closed, not on having created placeholders. Just MHO.

Players are already rolling onto Laurelin and trolling with horrid names just to get a reaction. It's going to get out of hand and the community will be destroyed before anyone even transfers. If Turbine is serious about maintaining the RP servers there needs to be some re-confirmation of the rules.

    Stop trolling.

While that's too bad that people are doing it, it is bound to happen from time to time. If the community on Laurelin is that easy to "destroy", maybe it isn't worth keeping.

Just report them and move on. Once the dust settles, things will start calming down. Every reasonable person can foresee a little trouble now and then, but eventually things will all calm down again and the community will be just fine (unless it's full of a bunch of thin-skinned people who can't handle a little temporary rustling around, which I really hope it isn't...)

It would be nice to have a little understanding, however, on BOTH sides. Always assume the best of people until they prove you otherwise. Sometimes, it could merely be a misunderstanding.

    2) Transfer "Oldname" to Brandywhine. The inactive "Oldname" will be renamed, and you get the name on your new toon.

    4) Transfer your old toon with "Newname" off of Brandywine to the server you created "Newname" (and Oldname before that), and you get a rename option.
    5) Rename back to "Oldname" on that server.
    6) Transfer back to Brandywhine. You can either delete your current "Oldname" before you transfer, or become "Oldname-1" with a free rename token and delete the placeholder later.

Option 2: (If the name is taken everywhere).

    1) Suck it up and play the game.
Yeah, the options both of you have are pretty much the only ones I can see. It's complicated, but definitely possible. I hope more people take note of these. Naming seems to be one of the biggest issues with the consolidation, but these methods will help alleviate some of the problems.

  19. I am confused about the new transfer features. Perhaps this has been addressed somewhere that I missed.
If so, please share the info?

I have multiple characters on a server that is closing. I don't want to move them all to the same destination server.
If I select WARDROBE as an option, will it copy the Wardrobe or just move it?
In other words, will the first character I move get all the wardrobe cosmetics, and the rest (going elsewhere) will have nothing?

Is there a quote/post from Turbine on this? Thanks!

With a large enough influx of players it may well disappear, don't get me wrong more players would be good. People just have to respect the extra rules on the server, you are not going to be welcomed if you start off with the name BobtheSexDwarf!

    Just make a small effort.

I think people should be respected before rules are respected. And two wrongs won't make a right.

Welcome them. And then report them. XD

Don't give them the power to tick you off. That's what they're there for. If everybody just acted like their names were nothing new (meanwhile reporting them, obviously), they wouldn't come back. They only do it because they know they will rile up a bunch of sensitive people.

    double housing

Probably it has already been answered, but I didn't see it:
If I have houses at both my transfer server and my destination server, how will that be handled? Also, I realize I could choose a different destination, but that would wreck my character plans. Am I forced to simply leave the house and all its equity to the desolation of an abandoned server?

It will move account/shared stuff (wardrobe, shared storage, wallet items that are account shared) to the server, characters moved elsewhere won't have access as that stuff will be on a different server. It doesn't matter the order of character movements in terms of your "first" (but they do suggest moving home owners first, shared items, then characters). Moving shared stuff is independent of moving the characters if you don't do them all at once. You are correct if you move characters away from the shared wardrobe they will not have access to it as it won't exist for them.

In the article it explains extra housing credit will go toward current house. So the equity gets rolled into the existing house. Vyvyanne did say they may look in the future to adding the ability to have more than one house per account but that wouldn't be until some future update if it's possible.

The welcoming and reporting has been happening to a degree, I guess I just got annoyed with all the constant arguing in chat, it was like being in a room with 20+ people shouting. I could not here myself think!
