[RL EVENT, SOCIAL MEET] Real life meet for Laurelin players?

    Hi all,
Talking to fellow player Thorfni, we thought it would be a grand idea if we had some form of real-life meet organised for the players of Laurelin.

Going on the idea we’d do something linked with Tolkien, there are two places with strong associations with him – Birmingham and Oxford.

Birmingham – Tolkien spent his early childhood here, living in various places and going to school. Some places: Sarehole, Birmingham Oratory
    http://birminghamheritage.org.uk/tolkien.html

Oxford – is where Tolkien went to University and later became a Professor there. Some places: Exeter and Merton Colleges, Eagle and Child pub.

In 2018, there are (at least) two events that are worth visiting in association with JRR Tolkien – the Middle-earth festival in Birmingham and the “Tolkien: Maker of Middle-earth” exhibition in Oxford -

    My thoughts...

    Option 1:
I can only stay over at weekends. If it’s Birmingham we pick – I could travel up on Friday and would have to return home on Sunday. Saturday would be the main focus. We go for the Middle-earth festival weekend so we have an event backdrop alongside visiting Tolkien-associated sites. People who wanted to could always plan a trip to Oxford around the Laurelin meet to see the exhibition (I am planning a trip in July myself to do just that at the moment).

The Middle-earth festival is a family event with lots of stalls, cosplay and things to do. It’s based at Sarehole Mill, a place recognised for its links with Tolkien – he grew up here as a young boy before his mother died and he claimed Sarehole as an inspiration for Hobbiton with its mill. It is also near Moseley Bog, thought to be the inspiration for the Old Forest. There’s a cute “Hobbit café” nearby as well. Hall Green Library has a fancy Tolkien inspired bench and wall decorations, worth a look (in the linked Flickr album below).

Sarehole Mill also run a guided tour around the Mill and surrounding area (which includes Moseley Bog called “The Origins of Middle Earth” walk. They will most likely be running one of these on the day of the Middle-earth festival, and I would like to think if there is enough interest, they would do one especially for our group. The current one is here, so you can see a little info -
    http://www.birminghammuseums.org.uk/...f-474b73acc5ad
They charge for that tour - usually £10

So one plan could be to go to the festival for some of the day on Saturday and maybe see one other location that day – perhaps the Oratory and Edgbaston’s “Two Towers” of Perrott’s Folly and the Edgbaston Waterworks Tower (just a note on these, the Tolkien Society doesn’t find any evidence to back up their influence on Tolkien). There are a few houses nearby also associated with Tolkien which have blue plaques.
Most of these places are close to railway stations that are linked to the centrally-based Birmingham New Street – so we could find affordable accommodation in Birmingham itself.

    Option 2:
Would be Oxford – see the sights linked with Tolkien (Eagle and Child, the colleges, etc) and people can visit the exhibition.
Note you have to pre-book a time with the exhibition, which is free aside for a £1 administration fee.
Downside with Oxford – I’ve been looking at accommodation for a while for my own trip, and Oxford is expensive. I would love to stay there and wander about the City of Dreaming Spires, it appears to be a little out of my usual price range.

    Eagle and Child pub

The Tourist Information Centre offers a guided tour to see some of the sites associated with Tolkien and Lewis, two of the Inklings called “The Official CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien Walking Tour”
    https://www.experienceoxfordshire.or...g-tour-oxford/
There is a charge for this tour – usually £16

The Ashmolean Museum is great for inspiration too, some great Anglo-Saxon items (including the Alfred Jewel), ancient world collections and they have Guy Fawkes Lantern!
    https://www.ashmolean.org/

Tolkien’s final resting place is also in Oxford, I’ve never gone out to it.

    ------------------------------------------------------------

So, that is my initial thoughts on what we could do – but there is plenty of time to plan, adapt, etc.

Would this be of interest to you? Would you attend?

    ...
Extra thoughts on dates – if we were to go weekend of 1-2 September, we’d be just before the Tale of the Shipwrecked Mariner (15-20 September) and Bilbo’s Birthday (20-26 September) and just before the Open Heritage Days events (6-9. 13-16 September - https://www.heritageopendays.org.uk/)

I honestly don't know that I'd be able to come being as I am in the US (lefthand coast if that makes a diff) I have in the past done meetups for other online groups.

I realize that you just posted this and this is just in the consideration stages, but have you figured out things like places to stay, transportation from train stations, airports, buses and the like for those who aren't local?

You can often get a group discounts for 20 reservations or more for places to stay. College towns are in my experience have more affordable places to stay if people don't mind hostels and the like. I've never been to the UK (or the EU in general. Canada is as far as I've been, and that is a 2 hour drive from where I live, so it doesn't quite count)

I did see the link you posted (I think it was you) quite a while back, and the festival does sound like quite a bit of fun. I know absolutely nothing, but that looks like a camping event, or at least in some part. If it is, would people be willing to share space? Or, is there a place that folk can rent tents and the like?

I don't know that I would be able to get time off from work or a passport in time to be able to do this, but if you need help organizing things once you get situated, I might be able to help with that.

    Thanks Snjorblom
Yeah, in terms of transport, hotels, etc - easy to work out. I'm not local local to Birmingham but travel to and sometimes stay there. Once we work out the definite location, I will post such info and do my best to provide info for people so they can work out expenditure.
In last few years I organised a kin meet to Liverpool and before that I used to be heavily involved with the Fan Force UK, so we organised many meets, outings and tables at cons. So I have a little experience in this.

I'm hoping that something like the Middle-earth festival will act as a draw and people can go off and do their own thing, if they prefer not to be in a group. I know some who have attended similar events then feel a bit overpowered.

I'll look into the camping thing, not sure it's Middle-earth festival. There was another festival up near Clitheroe, Middle-earth Beer festival that possibly included camping. I probably posted about both in the past.

    Keep the thoughts coming!

You're missing from your "Tolkien-related events" list the single biggest one: Oxonmoot.

I am guessing you know I am a member of the Tolkien Society. I didn't include Oxonmoot for several reasons - it's very much like the Tolkien Society Seminar (usually the first weekend in July in Leeds), a series of talks and other activities over a day/weekend. It's very scholarly (as well as fun). I know not all players of LOTRO want that level of engagement, and the proposal here is for something less taxing on the brain but definitely connected to why most of us play LOTRO - Tolkien and his world.

Even though I really want to go, Oxonmoot falls when my workplace (a college) is busy with the new year Maybe 2018 I'll attend. A full weekend (4 days) registration is £75 for members, £85 for non-members. If there are LOTRO players up for such a thing, we can do it on a smaller scale, because I know from people around me ingame - the amount of Tolkien scholars interested in such events is lower than the causal dip-ins.

That make sense? Like I said, if there are people interested in going to either the Oxonmoot or Seminar, I usually attend at least one or the other, but I've advertised the Seminar before and never had a LOTRO player join me (or if they did go, they missed me saying or just wanted to attend anonymously.

Another potential option for an an informal get together could be the UK Games Expo, in Birmingham the first weekend of June?

I'm guessing many lotro players also enjoy other kinds of games, and this is a nice event.

UK Games Expo is a great event, I've attended every year. I'll definitely be going again this year. Cubicle 7, who make the One Ring RPG always attend as well

    *takes notes*

I feel like this could coincide with my desire to leave the country and do something crazy pretty nicely
Illuvarion Silwë of Gondolin - Vanimar (Laurelin) | "You can't spell 'Noldor' without 'No'"
"It was on fire when I got here." | Valaraein Avariquen of Lórien - Death Guild (Landroval)

Nope. I don't get around the forums much, so I don't really know you -- nothing personal. It's just that Oxonmoot jumps out at me. My wife and I are going (we're building our big vacation this year around Oxonmoot and visits to many sites related to Tolkien and other authors in southern England) and several people in my kinship are also going or considering going and intending to meet up there. So I was surprised Sarehole Mill's September event got on the list but Oxonmoot didn't, that's all.
