I didn't complain about it. Since I like exploring every nook and cranny of the world, FoW was how I kept track of where I had been and where I still needed to go. I viewed it as I was drawing a map as I explored. I recall I was not alone in my disappointment when it was removed.
Oh, I liked it too, but I think we map-makers are in the minority. I was used to making maps for Eye of the Beholder and Bard's Tale and Might and Magic, so that was part of the appeal for me. But on the whole, there was a drive to make the LOTRO experience more accessible around that time, and removing fog of war was part of it. If it had been up to me, I might have said that the wilderness areas (like the Trollshaws, Forochel, and cave systems) should keep the fog of war, and the more civilized areas (like the kingdoms of Rohan and Gondor) wouldn't, but instead it's a relic of the old times.
MoL
Could just create an Ale of Fog that lasted an hour, making the mini-map hazy, and have an effect on viewing distance, but without the drunk repeating sound. Removed via coffee, ofc. Or just enhance a pipeweed to give this effect. lol Pipeweed hasn't had love in an age anyhow
What could also be fun is that all zones indeed do have a fog of war, but there will be a quest in the natural progression of quests in a zone (somewhere early, e.g. near Forsaken Inn in the Lone Lands, etc) that will reward you with a MAP!
Using the map will load it in your characters "map book", and will reveal the map of the zone. You can choose NOT to do that quest, or NOT to use the map if you prefer to explore.
Moved from Riddermark to Arkenstone on 9/29/2015!

Wasn't there something about reducing your character data footprint that had to be moved between the servers constantly by eliminating the FoW data?
I am also disappointed when I find a quest that has no text explanation for where to advance your objectives. They have definitely gotten lazier about providing descriptive text for many things.
