New Tolkien Movie

A trailer for an upcoming movie about Tolkien was released yesterday. According to the producers, it's going to delve into his life during WW1, which I'm pretty excited to see.

We ARE talking Hollywood; he will probably be portrayed as American and it will be based in America.

And there will be lots of car chases and explosions.

Seems like it might cover much of what John Garth wrote about in Tolkien and the Great War.
With some good dialog scriptwriters it may well be worth watching.

you are correct, however we don't know if its at the end but most likely have a look at time 1:43 on the new trailer.

Two fine young actors in the trailer: Nux the War Boy from Fury Road and Collins from The Blind Side. Looks to be British-made so the concern about Hollywoodizing the story is probably misplaced. I only hope that it gets played on this side of the pond - all the comic book superhero movies make the smaller, thoughtful flicks have to fight for screens.

I haven't been following movie news very closely lately, but I noticed a couple of interviews with the director Dome Karukoski in Finnish media. I'll write a short translation of this (tabloid) paper interview he gave recently to Ilta-Sanomat.

He said the recovery process from that project has been unusually tough, but he's been very pleased with how things went with Fox Searchlight. He mentioned that he was surprised how much they wanted to highlight quality over costs, and every time Karukoski said "this could be done better", the studio gave him the required resources. He also got to bring his own team to work with cinematography, editing etc.

At first he wasn't impressed with the script (he felt it wasn't "ready"), and didn't even want to do the film because he had just finished another biopic (Tom of Finland), and because there was some other project going on with Keanu Reeves. But when all the script changes he suggested were accepted (which was another surprise) and the Reeves's film got postponed, he decided to start working on Tolkien.

Encouraged by the very good test audience reviews last autumn, they decided to move Tolkien's premiere to May, because it's close to summer's movie season in the States. That later schedule also let him make some final changes to editing and audio etc. during the winter, and again the studio had everything perfectly set for him just as he, a "perfectionist", would like it.

Karukoski has said that Tolkien is sort of a "fan project" for him, and that he first read LotR when he was 12 years old. He also knows the passion fans have for JRRT and the world he created. Although he might not be the biggest Tolkien nerd there is, the movie concentrates on the time before The Professor had published anything, so in my opinion there is a good chance he the very least won't ruin anything with silly out-of-lore antics.

Also, I'm not a movie enthusiast in any sense of the word, but I don't remember any of his former projects being flops -- On the contrary, he's won some awards and commendations on many of his work. Mostly local, yes, and while that probably won't mean much in countries that have Star Culture in entertainment business, I'm quite confident he'll do justice to the early decades of Tolkien's life.

The Director himself has won a number of awards in Finland for his films, one of which was "Tom of Finland" which was sent to the Academy Awards, unfortunately it didn't get nominated under the Finnish category in foreign language film.

That was an....um.......interesting article. Why would anyone even think a movie about Tolkien would have that?

Because so many other movies have that, with little or no excuse for it.

My daughter and son-in-law are going to see it on Thursday (special showing); I'll append her comments when I have them.

My wife and I just got back from the movie.

It was good.

I knew nothing of his early life. I must confess I watched half the film with a tear in my eye.
I knew of his later writers group with C.S.Lewis but nothing of his early one, the TCBS.

Note to self: Do not take a time machine back to the First World War. I knew that anyway, but this just rammed it home.
