Imagine a Crossword Puzzle with only 2 words.
1 down and 1 across.
Looks like this:
Down: Aragorn
Across: Galadriel's realm
_
_
_
_
_ _ _ _ _ _
So you have two words to guess:
5 letters down with the clue "Aragorn"
and
6 letters across with the clue "Galadriel's realm"
The answer to this one is;
Down = Estel
Across = Lorien
e
s
t
e
l o r i e n
Here's another example:
Down: Bilbo's dad
Across: Long beard, pointy hat
_
_
_
_ _ _ _ _ _ _
_
The answer is below, but don't scroll if you don't want the answer yet.
This answer is;
Down: Bungo
Across: Gandalf
b
u
n
g a n d a l f
o
So this will take a bit of patience to create the graphic, but it might be fun. We'll see.
When answering the riddle it is not necessary to put them across and down like I have done above.
For instance to answer the first one above you would just submit:
Estel, Lorien
And for the second one;
Bungo, Gandalf.
Scope: same as the other trivia puzzles: the published canon; LOTR, The Hobbit, The Silmarillion, etc (No "letters" or Middle-earth History stuff) only JRRT Published stuff relating to Middle-earth.
OK, with all that preliminary stuff out of the way here is the first puzzle:
For some reason the spaces appear in the editor, but not in the published post, so the “down” lines are in the wrong place. The join should be on the fifth letter of the “across” word, not the first
I’m an alien, an illegal alien: I’m a Gondorian Captain in Rohan...
EDIT: whoops, you can't edit it because it won't work.
I re-read your post and now I understand. I discovered that problem last night.
I was going to explain that the "down" word did not necessarily need to be on the far-left end, but when I tried to give an example, it kept coming out on the far-left no matter how many times I beat my head against the wall.
For some reason the spaces appear in the editor, but not in the published post, so the “down” lines are in the wrong place. The join should be on the fifth letter of the “across” word, not the first
If I have the misalignment figured correctly then I think I have the puzzle solution.
Yeah, it works.
Font change may get the spacing better. Not all characters in the std forum font are the same width, but I think there are others that are.
