Today was a patch day which introduced new content so there might be a lot of people trying to log in at the same time or other server traffic delaying your login. If this is the cause, go do something else for a while and try again later.

However, when this happens it is most commonly due to the “Remember me for 8 hours” setting being enabled. This can be a special annoyance when playing on a Mac because the checks in the checkboxes of the LOTRO launcher application are not visible, which means you can’t even tell with a quick look if this setting is enabled or not. You can disable the setting by editing your UserPreferences.ini file with TextEdit. First be sure the game is not running. Next, look for the line...
StayLoggedIn-Enabled=true
...and delete it. Save the file. Quit out of TextEdit. Then launch the game and try to log in. If that line isn’t there, then that setting is not enabled and therefore is not the cause of your problem.

I think you're right. Last time this happened, I skipped a night and it worked next. Either it was an e z fix on ssg end or it was just too much competition to get in.
