Just noted that the post is formulated in an unclear way. XP support ends, so people should use W7.
Most of us tend to forget that Windows Vista was released in between. Don't know if there are people that use it, but it should be clarified.

" and you can continue to play the game by running LOTRO on a Windows 7 or newer operating system. " That's from the announcement.
That's pretty clear, you need Windows 7 or newer.

Cord brought Vista up in his yesterday's DDO Stream, and said that "this also applies to you [Vista users] as well". From 2:00 onwards:
Although I do sort of see your point over the ambiguity, I think this line from Wikipedia is answer enough
So (a) no sane person should be running Vista and (b) so few people are running it, it's irrelevant.Official mainstream support for Vista ended on April 10, 2012,and extended support ended on April 11, 2017. As of January 2021, Vista's market share has declined to 0.25% of Windows' total market share.
Which means SSG should officially drop support for it too.
Whilst they're clarifying that, why not announce when they'll drop support for Win7 too? Just to get all the pointless wailing and gnashing of teeth over and done with in one tedious lump.

Thank you for bringing this up, after the date in the announcement we will not be supporting Vista, either. It's true that we sort of skipped Vista, but the reason is that for quite a few years now the number of players using Vista has been statistically negligible, while XP was very very small but was a percentage point or two. I am not sure who is actually using Vista in 2021, but it seems like most old legacy machines still out there being used are either on XP or at some point moved up to Windows 7.

The Vista users are still waiting for their computers to boot up so they can read the news.
On the other hand those 2 should get special attendance, as they are the only 2 users that Vista ever had. I guess we all know it was one of the "dead on release" systems of MS, a fate shared with WME, Vista and W8.
But honestly, system requirements should be clear and now they are - although it is not present in announcements.
Both Vista users deserve the same heads-up information as the few XP users, to give them some time to do what they should have done since ages.
I very very recently switched from W7 to W10 and the free upgrade was still working
Though it did try to steal my fancy Windows 7 Ultimate edition and turn it into the most basic W10 version with only one language available and no option to change it to English, so I had to do some research and ended up having to do a clean install. It was still free and I got my best edition W10 with all the languages I needed so for anyone who hasn't switched over yet, if you don't know how to do it for free, there's a nice guide in an article you can find through Google![]()

God willing, Vista was horrible. They band-aid'd with 8.1 which made it useable.
EOL for all Win8 and server 2012 is next year so support from 3rd party will probably last a few years longer.

Vista and 8.1 have like nothing to do with each other. It was Vista > 7 > 8 > 8.1 > 10. 7 was basically the improved Vista.
Based on my experience Vista was decent after like the 2nd service pack, 7 was fantastic, 8.1 was almost as good. 8 was trash tho lol genuinely felt like that entire OS was the beta test for 8.1.
I'd rate 10 between 7 and 8.1 myself.
My favorite windows will probably always be 98SE though. That OS has a special place in my heart.
I think Win7 is still my favourite. It still was arranged like the older familiar Win versions but had the modern QoL improvements.

It is hard to believe people are still running XP and Vista. I know that several years ago I played a game that stopped supporting Vista because less than 3% of the player base used it at that time (3+ years ago, so the share would even less today), but those players were incurring a much larger share of the technical issues (which required customer service support and therefore cost the company money and increased CS wait times). It caused me to upgrade my son's computer (which was my old computer) from Vista to Windows 10, which cost about $100. Now this was my son's computer, which did not have any of our family's financial information on it (I had moved it to my new computer several years earlier). I cannot imagine running a computer with financial or identify information on it with such an old OS. If folks are doing that, they should have long since upgraded their OS for security reasons having nothing to do with LotRO.

I am a windows Vista user. I have never been hacked of personal data in the 9 years I have used this computer. I never even had to ask for help from Customer Support about game glitches. You sound like you're completely full of it. Thanks for supporting pushing players like myself out of the game for no real reason. Jerk.

Yeah nobody is going for the "push people out of the game" due to some choosing to use older OS Systems. LOTRO however has been moving towards the future where they can and certain areas like no longer supporting an OS like XP made sense as only X amount of the Playerbase was shown by SSG's stats to be using such. Fair warning was given that such wouldn't be supported anymore and that SSG's resources towards support for OS would be targeted towards more modern OS.
This will be the same thing when in X amount of time SSG stops supporting Windows 7 & Windows 8, etc.
While everyone's circumstances have and always will be different, having a more modern PC/Laptop with a more modern OS and Hardware is always a smart move. Granted how much time goes by before getting something more modern will come down to personal circumstances along with external factors that might be happening at the time such as the ongoing Pandemic and it's varying effects on everything.
"Official mainstream support for Vista ended on April 10, 2012,[19] extended support ended on April 11, 2017" this is from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Vista
Support ended 9 years ago, and the extended support ended 4 years ago.
"The study has found that less than one percent of PC users have Windows XP and Vista." https://www.firstpost.com/tech/news-...t-9580671.html
There really is no reason for SSG to support an ancient OS that 1% of PC customers use.
