I wish to offer a final thank you to everyone in this thread who offered advice, guidance, and answered my many questions.

This morning, I finally completed two new legendary items and gave them a whirl. Even using mostly Uncommon components, the improvement is significant, such that I can easily complete level 135 Missions. The new legendary items may be enough to take me to level 140, though I will continue to pursue equipment upgrades via other paths.

Easy Missions continue to serve as my primary path to progress and improvement. If the Mission system offered equipment, I would engage in a much broader selection of Missions. As things stand, enemies that reach me inflict a lot of damage. Therefore I must select Missions wisely to avoid getting swarmed.

It so happens I have another question!

On another account, I have a character who did things correctly. She appraised her old legendary items and used the Ancient Script to create new ones.

This leaves her with some useless, old style, legendary items. As best I can tell, she can no longer deconstruct them. These are third age items, previously used for generating old style components, not her old first age items, which I intend to keep for nostalgia. Do I simply destroy old third age items after appraising them?

After they’re appraised, correct. I kept mine for some reason, and I do cosmetically equip some them. In fact a fully buffed level 60 FA Great Axe is better than the new school LIs, but that is the only edge case I found so far.

I also kept many old style legendary items on two dedicated storage characters.

The good people at Standing Stone Games gave me a large number of free items including armor bundles from Mordor, Minas Ithil, and Three Peaks. These bundles appear on every character but are bound to character which gives me pause. Obviously, I only need one set, which can go into the wardrobe. Yet, what happens if I want them on a particular character in the future? Are these things subject to the /reclaim command? Should I even care? I suppose I should make a new character and see if that character gets the items.
