Doing that quest for the first time in a few years. Rather than the role play, it now adds that option in the description. However, there's no text added to my bags and when I talk to Mithrandir it asks if I'm ready for role play. How do you do the alternate?

If you are talking about Volume IV, Book 8, Chapter 1, 'No Other Way', this is one of the session plays that received the option to be skipped with U34. The "Shortened Account" is an item (a book) located near the quest giver. You interact with it to skip the session play part of the quest.
