Got it again. It has been a busy day at work, but I'll see if I can come up with a trickier riddle soon.

Another easy one while I'm thinking:

Lit from within with greening and gold,
Dwelling austere of the shepherd of old,
With guardians tall and guardians green,
Shimmering veil screens a king with no queen.

Yes, indeed. I knew the "shepherd of old" bit would be too big a hint.

    Here's another for your enjoyment:

Ferocious my name but no threat I hold,
Tales I have heard, but none have I told.
Stories of tree-men and dragons and dangers,
Tales told by hobbits and queer dwarven strangers.
Like the miller's son said to the one that he bothered,
There's one of us here, and that's me, there's no other.

    SL
The Green Dragon. Ted Sandyman is the miller's son, and Sam is the one that he bothered.

"Ah," said Ted, "you do, if you listen. But I can hear fireside tales and children's stories at home, if I want to."

"No doubt you can," retorted Sam, "and I daresay there's more truth in some of them than you reckon. Who invented the stories anyway? Take dragons now."

"No thank 'ee," said Ted, "I won't. I heard tell of them when I was a youngster, but there's no call to believe in them now. There's only one Dragon in Bywater, and that's Green," he said, getting a general laugh.

    WELL DONE, Silverlocket!

OK, so it was too easy. I still liked it, though.

Unfortunately, y'all guessed it a little too quickly. I don't have any others in mind yet. Anybody else out there have one?

    Re: The Riddle-Game

ok here goes, whether or not it's ready

No ponderous thought, no philosophy grand
Did I scheme in my head; clean shaven and hairless
But a treacherous plot, maliciously planned
Shared with the Dread, and then sprung on the careless
Yet no traitor am I, for the thoughts were not mine
In this murderous tale, where corrupt hidden meetings
Nearly made the great die, or leave stronghold behind
But each day without fail, I’m seen wounded and bleeding

Learned in 'Old wives tales' am I,
I saw Royalty first, while others stood by.
Though simple I am among those of great name,
My name is immortal through tales of the same.

Klapton, yours is athelas or kingsfoil. I haven't read Elvyen's yet, but I will now.

I'm guessing Denethor on Elvyen's, and then repondering Klapton's.

Oh, the answer would be Ioreth. I suppose I went over the riddle too quickly and missed some things as I was keen on getting started on Elvyen's.

    The palantir that Denethor used?

    Yup!

Then an old wife, Ioreth, the eldest of the women serving in that house, looking on the fair face of Faramir, wept, for all the people loved him. And she said, "Alas! if he should die. Would that there were kings in Gondor, as there were once upon a time, they say! The hands of the king are the hands of a healer. And so the rightful king shall ever be known."

    ...

"King! Did you hear that? What did I say? The hands of a healer, I said." And soon the word had gone out from the House that the king was indeed among them, and after war he brought healing; and the news ran through the city.

I agree with you, SL, rather than my original guess of Denethor. "clean shaven and hairless" really fits the palantir of Minas Anor. I just wasn't sure if Denethor was bald or not...

Born in wars of ancient past,
My original master long breathed his last.
But my great enemy I caused to fall,
And my vengeance was wrought by the hands of the small.

    I'd say Sauron.

Alas, I doubt I will be posing any riddles here myself...I need to save my best ones for in-game special events. (Well, okay, I might try formulating some from extant texts, such as the Sil. )
