Re: Hidden Nuggets we see all the time...

I know its probably been mentioned before, but I think my favorite moment was today when my Halberd of the Goblin Wars started glowing blue near orcs. I suppose I should have guessed it and seen it coming, but I didn't, and I about jumped out of my seat in glee when I realized it was glowing a soft blue. I'll never get rid of this weapon, even after I've out leveled it. I'll just store it for good memories.

FINALLY caught up on this thread. Kudos to all and especially Turbine.

Berephon your commitment to this thread is outstanding.

Reading all these nuggets is going to cause me to go buy the books. To be honest, I've never read them.

As good as the movies were, they pale in comparison to the books. I highly recommend reading them to anyone that is a fan of fantasy writing. I have made it a habit to read them every year since I received them as a gift on my 12th birthday. Over 25 years now and they are still fresh and exciting to me every single time I read them.

The entire time I was reading the book, I was remarking how amazingly nearly every detail is exacted in the game. As opposed to the movies, which I am beginning to loath more and more as I read the books again.
That song was when Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli put Boromir in the boat after he was killed. Gimli was left for the East wind and rightly sang nothing as evil is on the East wind.

Right! Thanks. I flipped back through the pages real fast stopping at all the indented songs and poems, but I must have missed that one.

This might have been mentioned, but in the Fellowship of the Ring Sam talks about his cousin who lives in Overhill. He says there was a giant tree which was able to walk around. The quest is called Free the Tree. And Sam says his cousin Hal saw a walking tree that made seven yards to a stride. He also described it as tall and looking like an elm tree.

"My cousin Hal for one. He works for Mr. Boffin at Overhill and goes up to the Northfarthing for the hunting. He saw one."

Then after Ted Sandyman talks he goes again about it.

"But this one was as big as an elm tree, and walking-walking seven yards to a stride, if it were an inch."

All important words are underlined. The quest link is here also.

Hal himself can be found up in Oatbarton, where he's hanging around for the hunting.

2 little things, and neither has been mentioned yet (I just read the entire thread for the first time).

    1. Probably just an Easter egg, but how about the little scarecrow in the middle of nowhere North Downs? I've tried to figure out significance for him, but haven't found it.

    2. Back in closed beta . . . . when I first explored Bag End, behind the painting on the right in the entrance . . . . there were several other rooms (showing in the mini-map). I immediately thought of the rumored hoardes of gold, and wondered if it were just a bug . . or if they would come into play in some quest one day. Since they don't show in the mini-map anymore, I'm guessing it was just a bug . . . but I spent quite a while trying to get inside that wall! lol.

As I recall, the rumored horde of gold was just that... a rumor. Whenever Bilbo needed more gold, he would go get it from someplace where he stashed the one or two chests (all that one pony could carry) he brought back from the trolls den.

Though as implied by Gandalf's appraisal of the Mithril Shirt, those two chests could have contained enough treasure to be considered several hordes indeed.

Tough to say... considering that Bilbo & Frodo's mail is suggested to be the finest piece of metal work Gimli has ever seen, I have always assumed it's value to be much greater than any of the gold or gems that Bilbo may have brought home. I think his mail is easily 100x more valuable (at least monetarily) than anything else he brought back from his journey.

Which implies that all of the rest of his treasure was only mundane gems and gold. Besides, the value of Sting was never mentioned either and for all we know it could have been double the worth of even the Mithril Shirt.

Bilbo brought back two small chests of gold and silver (just what a pony could carry from the Lonely Mountain, which really is not a great deal, though certainly enough to keep him for a very long while--he essentially spent the last of it on the Party, 61 years later.) According to Gandalf, the shirt was monetarily worth more than the entire Shire.

This is very true. However, in my mind, unless Sting were made of Mithril I submit it is extremely unlikely that it's value was greater than that of the mail. Mithril being the most coveted material in Middle Earth, and the mail being the finest work of it that a Dwarf has ever seen. And given that there's no indication that Sting is made of Mithril I have to assume that it is not.

But I'm not trying to be confrontational or anything and just wanted to add some commentary with regards to whether Bilbo's two chests really constitutes a "horde". But that's the kind semantic debate that doesn't really have a "right" and "wrong" so ehhh.... maybe it's a horde and maybe it's not.

Ahh, then it was just gold and silver. This, I did not know for sure. Thank you.

I know what Mithril is and I know that it isnt certain that the Sword is or isn't made of anything in particular, I was just speculating.

As for the usage of the word "horde" I wasn't trying to pick apart words, but Iv'e heard the word used before to describe something much smaller then two chests full of gold and silver. If you presented those to anyone and asked if it was a horde, I think it is reasonable to think they would say yes.

Well, to many eyes, Sting is just a pretty dagger. If you picked it up in a surplus store, and there were no orcs about, you would know nothing different. I can easily see a person using it as a letter opener or to cut their food up while camping, as a sharp knife is a great tool anywhere.

As for the "horde" or "not horde" you would need to look not only at the amount of treasure in the question, but where this amount of treasure is being measured against.
If I have $1000 US in Wyoming, it's a modicum of money. If I have the same $1000 US in, say, rural Guatemala, I have a relatively greater wealth state.
In The Shire, the main coin of trade is the copper penny. Ponies and pigs may cost more, but if I walk into the Green Dragon and toss a gold coin on the bar, I'm DEFINITELY getting a lot of attention. And a lot of drunk.

Right, but a horde isnt a "large sum of money", if you have a single dollar bill worth 15 billion dollars, that isnt a horde. But if you have 15 million pennies, THAT is a horde.

Now can you imagine if we were able to craft items out of Mithril as some would like and actually expect? Inconceivable!

The point about what does or doesn't constitute a "hoard" is moot here. Among the Hobbits of the Shire there was -rumor- that Bilbo had a huge hoard of gold and silver hidden away in Bag End. That's what the fellow awhile ago was talking about.

I always remember that part of the book, because I liked how Bilbo was this mysterious eccentric to the rest of the Shire... and all the rumors that surrounded him. I dunno.

Perhaps this shirt is more valuable to men, elves, wizards, and dwarves. However, sensible folk like Hobbits would rather have the Shire then some shiny metal mathom =P.

Just wanted to be a pedantic and point out that the word you guys are looking for isn't 'horde', but 'hoard'.

    Other than that, carry on.
