The funny part is, it does refer to the free trial! Only in hindsight does it seem to presage our announcement. When we partnered with ATI, the deal was to put the free trial sign up links into their drivers.

First of all, IIRC, DX11 for LOTRO was supposed to come out in spring of 2010, probably with Vol. 3.1. Second, I've been seeing the "Play for Free" ads ever since I started playing LOTRO 2 years ago. In fact, I think it us one of those ads that got me started. And the free trial was mentioned on the nextbpage after I clicked on the link.

It's a secret plot, actually. Turbine is going to switch LOTRO over to Free-to-Play with Micro-Transactions, and ATI is in on the plan, but let it leak a little soon. The plan itself will make LOTRO much like DDO, subscription-wise, but instead of "Turbine Points" we'll have "Tolkien Points", which we can spend in "Ye Old LOTRO Shoppe".

So is the idea of LOTRO going F2P, actually. This has been addressed on the forums many, many times, and was addressed here as well. It's a dead horse issue, thus why we had a little fun in it.
