    Horse Upgrades

Ok people, have you ever wanted a cooler looking horse? one that you can add armour to? be able to fight mounted and run over your foes? or just trick out your horse with a new saddle, maybe a flag on the back, and maybe clothes to? and a barn with a stall for it next to your house?
If you agree with this post, give this post a thumbs up, and maybe we can get turbine to respond by taking this idea.

There are a couple of horses with flags on their back (and dam silly they look too): the Elf Ambassador's Horse and the World-Renowned Horse.

Fate, you've been just bubbling over with neat ideas, but there's something you haven't realized yet. Turbine has THOUSANDS of neat ideas that are already on their to-do list, their wouldn't-it-be-nice list, their drawing boards, and maybe even on their schedules for launch in the next year or two.

But neat stuff doesn't just happen. Somebody has to script it, if it's a quest; draw it, if it's a new mount or mob or piece of armour; animate it; write umpteen lines of code to make it all work in-game, in-house-alpha test it, beta-test it, and finally schedule it for launch "Soon" or sometime like that.

    http://my.lotro.com/user-34/2010/09/...g-to-sapience/

And all those somebodies have to be paid a living wage. It all takes money.

Turbine's got a budget, like everybody else, and like everybody else except maybe Bill Gates and the Sultan of Bahrain, it has to decide what it can and can't afford with funds available.

Meanwhile, if you can get Kindred with all three Elf-factions -- Rivendell, Mirkwood, and Lorien -- you can get the Elf-Ambassador's Horse, with 250 Morale, a faster speed than your basic horse, and a flag on its behind. If you get Kindred with every faction in Eregion, you can get the World-Renowned, with the same stats I think. You can work on these by questing and collection rep items. You'll collect a good few TP on the way, with which you can buy some other horses if you want a collection.

Well, first off, this should be in the suggestions forum rather than the general discussion. And if you had bothered to read the suggestions forum before posting, you'd see that none of this is new at all. It's been suggested lots of times by lots of people, including a great deal of elaborate details to help give the suggestion some meat.

It's not a bad suggestion, by any means - just in the wrong place. And it might have been better to pick one of those other posts and just add your own endorsement to it.

The Rohan expansion would be the perfect opportunity to do stuff like this as it is the realm of the horsemaster and premier horse breeders.

The thing that has GOT to be done before Rohan opens is the necessary coding to let us fight on horseback. Anything else is gravy. Including, I'm sure, some elegant new horse models.

If we can fight on horseback, I want a champ skill that lets me one-shot ground mobs if I have a greatsword or great-axe equipped. And allow trainable horse attacks (horse bite to the face = nasty).

Really, I'm serious. It's about the only thing that would offset the huge advantage horseback combat would give to ranged classes.

How about charging up to the mob on your horse and skewering it with your spear, with the mass of 5000 virtual pounds of horse behind the thrust? Or charging up and decapitating it and riding off again before its fellows can react?

As to ranged classes ... the Parthian cavalry used to ride up close to the enemy and then turn and ride away, while the rider turned in his seat and shot at his targets while retreating. It gave him a better aim. Hence the term "a Parthian shot," meaning a nasty remark thrown over one's shoulder while walking away from an argument.

As to horse attacks, in the High Middle Ages the horses were trained to do all kinds of things. I haven't heard about biting, but lots of rearing up on the hind legs to avoid a blow from the enemy, then coming down on him with hooves flailing. The Lippizaner stallions still do those routines, but in performance, not combat.

A lot of destriers were trained to bite, as it provided another form of defense for the rider, and turned the horse into a weapon, rather than a ride. It also made it harder to steal a horse, as if it were loyal to its rider, it would bite and attack anyone else who tried to mount.

In game reality, I do think (if we do get mounted combat) that being able to rank up a horse, in the way we rank up our skirmish soldiers now, would be pretty neat.

You have it wrong my friend, if they ever could competly recode the entire game to allow this .. Its the melee that should benefit the most IE above head strokes should be + percantage to melee attack , while a range fighter should have - percantage. In real world physics and historicaly accurate accounts of battle, this is what should happen. Its darn hard to do something complicated like shoot a bow from range on a moving horse. IE then they would also write code to drop percantage from non moving horses lol.. Its all very complicated. Hence, why this would be a big wish, probably never to come true for most of us.)

BTW there were disadvantages fighting on horseback as well.. You didnt really want to be in the leading the way while driving through a group of pikemen backed up by yeoman either.

They would also have to recode all those nifty graphics, as none of those work on hoseback either.

    Re: Horse Upgrades

Mounted combat - perhaps. If they made it a separate combat system. Give melee a couple of dps skills and range another set of skills. Nothing bound to what class you actually are from the start. Perhaps a special area where that mounted combat can be used.

What I would like to see first of all with Horses are the Morale and their speed, to make it a passive skill that you can upgrade, so if you complete the deed for the World Renown horse you get the horse skin ofc and then your passive trait upgrades to 168% speed or changes the Morale. Having that makes it possible to use any horse skin you want, if there is a nice festival horse released you very much like you can use that and still have 250 morale and 168% speed as you do on the "best" horses now.

Well, I was talking game mechanics where the ranged classes would have the advantage. Horse archers were occasionally used in combat effectively, but I think it was mostly as a harassing force (most of my non-US military history starts at WWI). Some US Indian tribes could do it quite well, although mounted combat was rare for them until the mid-1800s.

It would be cool if, with mounted combat, we'd face schiltrons or shield-walls of Haradrim and have to come up with tactics to break through or successfully flank. I'd love something like that, but then I'd love weapon stats being based on historical reality too (a mace or warhammer being more effective against a plate-armoured opponent than a sword, differentiation between chain, scale, and plate for different classes and the corresponding weaknesses and mitigations, etc).

Bedazzler man you made my day

id love this but i gotta think me and my hunter friend are sparring and i stun him and run away ad constantly stun and out run to piss him off.the kind of tatics you could pull off on a horse with extra speed would screw alot up
