Turbine has data mines that cover every aspect of the game. They know just about everything about each and every individual player. My question is then why do they need to ask for detail from the users? They are supposedly the professionals. They wrote the code. The only responsibility the customer has is to let them know there's a problem.

I am not defending the crashes - this is a bit too much ...

But, they have to find the bugs like needles in a haystack. They are hidden somewhere in the mountains of data they gather. They have that, but they have to find out where the problems come from.

And they do not know the machine configurations, drivers and graphics cards of individual players. So we have to tell them so that they can fix it.

Why do they need to know this? The products available for individual use in any person's machine is public knowledge; they should be current on it, it's part of the job if they're indeed professionals about their work. What each and every person is using has no bearing on the matter, or at least it shouldn't.

I sympathise with your point, but unfortunately they cannot test every combination. Consider a limited scenario where the only things that affect something are, say, graphics card, processor, chipset and OS. That's 4 items (there would be more). Lets be charitable and say there are only 10 different chipsets and OSs, 1000 different graphics cards and processors, in just our limited example, there are 1000x1000x10x10 different permutations, ie 100,000,000. It's a bit much!

So what they do is do the more common ones, and rely on people giving them specific information when there is a problem. The hardest thing to do as a developer is to fix a problem when you cannot replicate it. This helps them.

As much as I really really think that RoR is a bit of a buggy and unpolished release, and as much as I want them to fix the problems NOW! I do know that help is often needed (that being said, I hate the tendancy of devs to dismiss reported problems if a driver has not been updated, it feels like you have to prove that your worthy enough for them to consider your problem)
    'Tis but a scratch!

Well, I guess I'll join the pile onto Turbine here. I just had two crashes exactly similar to the ones I had during Beta. I went into the Legendary place in Floodwend and had the NTDLL crash. Locked up solid. ctr-alt-del to get out. This needs to be fixed. I know they are trying. I hope they fix the quit game hang also. I've had this since ROI. It's not sooo bad because I'm leaving gameplat, but it does become a nuisance.

I am going to mention something here for people to think about, because this an anecdote. Whenever I have had serious stability issues with software, I have also had local problems. Things that I know that cause local stability problems include: failing power supply (these can be a real pain to pin down and very damaging to other components), failing motherboard, failing hard drive, failing memory sticks, failing keyboards, failing video cards, and failing network adapters. Things like memory leaks become more noticeable if you are having local hardware failing too. The trickiest ones to pin down sometimes are intermittent memory stick failures, whether they're main RAM or video card VRAM. I have had memory sticks pass MemTest runs still get gremlins randomly (probably heat related) when running software that pushes your local system resources. Again, I am not absolving Turbine of things under Turbine's control. Nevertheless, sometimes it does take detailed local machine data, which is not something Turbine will collect without your consent, to pinpoint random (to the people doing debugging) software faults. The more reproducible data they can get, the easier it gets to find and fix it.

maybe it's time to update the system requirements page:
    http://www.lotro.com/getting-started...m-requirements

because nowhere does it state that the game requires the kind of hardware and software to run that people claim itt:

In order to fully experience the amazing world of Middle-earth you'll need to have a Windows PC that meets the following requirements:

    Minimum System Requirements

    O.S.: Windows® XP
Processor: Intel Pentium® 4 1.8 GHz or equivalent
    RAM: 512MB
    Video: 64MB NVIDIA GeForce® 3 or ATI® Radeon® 8500
    Disk Space: 7GB available
    DirectX: DirectX® 9.0c
    Optical Drive: 2X DVD ROM
    Connection: 56kbps Modem

    Recommended System Requirements

    O.S.: Windows® XP/Vista
Processor: Intel Pentium® 4 2.8 GHz or equivalent
    RAM: 1GB
    Video: 128MB NVIDIA GeForce® 6800 or ATI® Radeon® X850
    Disk Space: 10GB available
    DirectX: DirectX® 9.0c
    Optical Drive: 2X DVD ROM
    Connection: Broadband DSL/Cable

All i want is for them to fix things not us to change our systems. I really don't think rohan is any more system intensive than anything that went before. Turbine expansions always have these same problems.

Anyway, they always fix them and i am enjoying rohan a great deal despite the tech issues.

Their data mines tell us what we are doing in the game, and are server side. They tell them nothing about the client that's not what they are looking for.

Thus they need to ask us as many details as possible to find out what's exactly appearing to happen at our ends and as much as possible about our current PC config to work out what's going wrong. If they don't they aren't even matures let alone professionals.

The customer has no reponsibility to do so but their grounds for complaint tumbles if they don't help.

For everyone else, here's my one year old thread now giving a workaround for the 32 bit client crashes. This won't make your client bulletproof but it will help alleviate a lot of the crashes to desktop:

Thread: Workaround for Client Crash to Desktop in 32-bit Windows

I also give a link to a blog post in there where you can LEGALLY download the 64 bit version of Windows 7 .ISO if you're running Win 7 32 bit. Your key will legally work with it.
I have a desktop system running Windows XP 32-bit and i had previously used this workaround when RoI came out and i started crashing to desktop on random occasions, repeating pattern was that it always happened when i took a horse ride from Galtrev stablemaster to Nan Curunir.

After RoR came out i started crashing again, even though i had done this workaround to fix RoI crashing. I had /userva setting at 2176. I saw some people in this thread put a different number in to that setting, so i tried /userva 2900. Since that, haven't crashed a single time and i played several hours. Now, it doesn't even crash when i quit, which it always did even with /userva 2176 setting.

Edit: Also, i'm using the latest Nvidia drivers without the nView software running on the background.

Yeah, the original number I used was for when RoI was first released. It would usually stay under that number. It gradually crept up though with the release of the Great River. If you had looked further down in my thread I had posted some updated numbers to use. (I can't edit the main post - it won't let me submit it)

    Windows xp - 32 bit
    ATI video card
    Did NOT purchase RoR

Unable to get past the character selection screen - I continuously crash this has been happening for several days now - I can't even get into the game - I just crash with the typical client crash message it has to close do you want to send the report to microsoft.

I would really like this fixed because I literally have not been able to play the game at all since I can't get in.

Since 8.0.2 I have still been experiencing a lot of random crashes to desktop and a drop in performance (lower FPS and stuttery), before 8.0.2 I would crash occasionally but no where near as often as now.

The headset i use is USB and doesn't have any available drivers so can not be updated (as asked to by tech support)

We are continuing to look at this and we keep coming across more and more third party applications that appear to be invloved.

We've had recent reports that a URL 'fixer' tool that corrects your URL typos, may be causing some of these crashes. If you are using Sendori, or similar applications, we strongly encourage you to uninstall them and see if that resolves your issue.

Also, before you bother posting the popular "quit blaming us and fix it" reply, please note that every time we mention one of these fixes it's because it has resulted in a 100% fix those who reported it to us. There are more than a half dozen different things that players have reported to us as completely fixing the problem and none involved any changes to the client. Almost all were driver, plugin, or 3rd party application related.

Considering plugins only exist within the game client environment, any issues caused by them can be stemmed back to the client itself.

As someone who writes plugins I feel extremely irritated with the bad publicity they are getting from this. I know people in-game who are completely put off using them, and probably won't use them in future even if this issue get fixed.

It would be nice if someone at Turbine could post in the Lua thread what they are identifying to be the issues within the plugin system so we as authors can look into our work and make necessary adjustments. The last thing I want is players to suffer client crashes because of something I coded. Until such time as the plugin issue gets fixed I can at least try and sort things out a bit at my end.

    You still dont get it.

I'm not trying to be argumentative with you but this comment is absolutely ridiculous. I would much rather hear that you are working on the issues as quickly as possible but instead we get more hand waving and finger pointing at your customer base that is experiencing issues. What's causing the memory leaks? What's causing the crash upon entering session plays? The bottom line is the client worked for most everyone BEFORE RoR. It now does not for a portion of your userbase. This issue has been there since day 1 of beta. The fact we are here still talking about it a couple weeks post launch is really pretty infuriating. Its quite sad reading Kin chat reading people logging back on after a clint crash. Its not just a few people Sir, its about 1/3 of out kin that running into problems like this.

As for plug ins YOU made changes to the client that caused conflicts with YOUR own LUA support system.

Just a cautious word of advice to you my friend. I would slow your roll with the finger pointing at your customer base. Many are ready to take their "faulty" computer systems and just go play other BRAND NEW games and expansions flawlessly. Your company has run out of equity with many in the playerbase long ago and the continued hand waving and failure to accept responsibility is really playing with fire.

If the issue were 100% our code, then absolutely nothing any player did would fix it. Nothing. However, this is cleary not the case. It doesn't mean we aren't continuing to address other possible causes, but for those who wish to see the issues resolved and not just make angry posts we're commited to giving you the information as we find it.

With that said, as this thread has gone where I asked it not go, there is no need of it any longer.
