Well to be fair.. we get our information from YOU GUYS! Thats our sources of info, period. Anything else is pure speculation. This is the first I have heard of the SPECIFIC reasons for this maintenance, and Im sure most everyone else. So it was perfectly reasonable for us to wonder if:

    A) That there was some actual game code changes being made.. until you corrected us on that, then...

    B) That there was back end game server maintenance being done, which COULD result in a better game experience.. until you just shot that down.

With all due respect, you cant expect us to know that you are working on billing and support systems. And without that specific information, we are of course going to make our own assumptions. This is a wonderful game, I adore it and have a tremendous amount of respect for all of you.. but you DO understand we dont know what you guys are doing unless you tell us, right? And perhaps you dont think we NEED to know the specifics of what you are working on, but with the significant, game affecting issues we experience in the game, its certainly something we think about, and speculate about. And we always appreciate the heads up.

    Just saying.

We have been pretty clear in what our terms mean over the past 6 years. Hotfixes are game/server changes that are very small, usually impact a large number of people, and need immediate attention. Patches are Game/server changes that are significant in terms of bug fixes and Maintenance is non-game impacting maintenance on back end, support, or other services.

This has been floating around for a couple of years now as well.

I would like Saruman's Mankini, an autographed Gandalf poster, two dozen bacon & cheese turnovers and the third tree from the left as you enter Rivendell, please.

    And a pizza.

Oh and Aragorn's Down-Home Warg Curry recipe please, apparently it's a memorable experience.

Ah, I forget. So... Grilled Cheese.

Take two pieces of bread, usually white, and put a slice of american cheese on one or both. Put both on a skillet or in a fry pan, bread side down. Basically you're 'grilling' the bread and melting the cheese. Once the cheese melts put the two pieces of bread together, let it grill a little more, flip it, then let the other side brown up a bit, cut in half and serve.

Some people put tomatoes, ham, bacon, whatever on them as well. Some people have it with a bowl of soup or potato chips, or french fries. It's a basic American 'comfort food'.

And yes, I know most Americans know what this is, but you're now the second Brit who's asked me what they are in about a week.

Thank you for the response. I appreciate what you are saying, but I feel like you are falling into the trap of making assumptions about what background information we have. It may be true that you have established some criteria for what sorts of things are done with each type of maintenance/updates/patches, and it may be true that youve already posted such things over the years.

The reality is, however, that the forum population is dynamic, ever changing, with different understandings and backgrounds. I for instance, started in closed beta but have recently returned from a long 2 year absence. Im loving the game again, but I did not specifically have concrete knowledge about the terminology that you use to describe each possible sort of downtime. From what I have read on the forums, and from conversations Ive had in the game, a lot of other folks dont, either.

I am in no way telling you how to do your job, but might I suggest a BIT more transparency, some greater "heft" to forum announcements might be a positive thing? Perhaps instead of saying

"All Turbine Game Servers and http://myaccount.turbine.com will be offline for global maintenance from 6:00AM Eastern (-5 GMT) Thursday, February 14th until 6:00am Eastern Time (-5 GMT) Friday February 15th.", you could add an extra line, like "This maintenance is specifically for the billing and support systems, and will not affect gameplay."

Something like that. Just a bone tossed to us. Its not necessary, it wont make any money for Turbine/WB.. but it sure would help keep us in the loop. Because we DO wonder about the state of the game, we DO wonder if certain problems are being addressed, worked on, fixed. That does matter to us, and may affect our future decisions about playing the game.

Anyways, thanks for listening! Have a great Valentines Day and thank you for all of your hard work!

Yum. It's great with chili, too.

Hey that's right! They LIED to us. This is an utter slap in the face to all LOTRO fans. We were promised locked/read only forums, and yet again we've been disappointed. I'm sure the evil Store is SOMEHOW involved with decision not to lock the forums.

Pepperjack cheese is the better cheese to use. So much better than lame old american cheese.

That's because you guys have a habit of changing the names of things, we were making "toasted cheese sandwiches" long before you guys knew what sandwiches were :P

Seems a lot of work for a cheese toastie as we call them. Why not just use a toastie maker, so much quicker.

Because then you don't get the added benefit of the grease or butter used to grill/fry them. Believe it or not, there is a different taste (had them both ways) and with the toaster version the cheese doesn't melt into gooey goodness like it does when grilled.
