Children's Miracle Network is a network of hospitals all over the US and they all have the same mission. They have been my charity of choice for many years. They do truly amazing work.

That all being said I think your solution was a terrific one and I know that donating to help children with Cleft Palate or Lip will directly improve the life of that child. I am glad you joined in the spirit of the drive which is for us as a gaming community to reach out and give back to those less fortunate than we. I am glad you did so in a way that spoke to you.

Donated to the Team! This is a fantastic way to raise money. I didn't participate last year because I didn't hear about it! Not so this year. I am hoping I can get my Kin involved a bit not because of the nice thank you's but because the fundraiser is important!

I have several kids that have special needs (epilepsy being the biggest) so I understand from the parents perspective how important needed medical care can be and how expensive!

I saw this last night and just haven't had time to update. Donations EXPLODED last night. Over 200 yesterday alone. And a number of Kinships really stepped up last night.

We're now less than $3700 away from matching last year's TOTAL and we still have a couple of weeks to go!

I'll have to give this some thought.

Actually, you have the option to donate to the International-serving Children's Miracle Network hospitals. The hospital I've chosen for my Extra Life page is located in Washington D.C. and they treat kids from other countries -- they get flown in and given medical treatment they're unable to get where they're from. Just because the charity is located in the U.S. (and some in Canada), doesn't mean it is isolated to it. There are many gamers doing Extra Life who are in other countries and raising funds for the International-serving hospitals in the Network. Please research a charity before you disparage it!

Hardship is the worst you see in the USA.
I just gave toa charity that does operations that alter a persons LIFE- in moany cases by saving it and in all others making these people be treated as human.
I feel strongly on this as I was born with same (a step worse actuallyin some cases) condition
But I live in the 'west' (UK) and so it's all sorted
I have a lucky life and have a babe of a wife (I'm smart and funny as you might know) and a beautiful son.

I had my first op when I was 2 weeks old - and then had loads extra over the years 'til I was 12
that was 1964 - nowadays they can do ONE operation. ONE
and fix it enough for these kids to have a life

Each year someone tries to make this political and somehow take a swipe at America in the process. So let me educate you a little bit.

For starters, there is an old saying, "Think Global, Act local". That sort of speaks for itself.

Next, If you think "hardship" is the worst you see in the US, you haven't got clue one. We have birth defects. We have poverty. We have the same problems as any country in the world. We're blessed to be a wealthy country. No question. But that's not the question. We have the issues as most of the world and charity crosses borders. I can point to people right here in the building I'm sitting in that have children with health issues that go far beyond "hardship."

I play for Boston Children's Hospital because I've been there and see what they do. Did you know they have an entire department that does nothing but find housing and accommodations for families that come from every country in the world. They work it out. The make sure parents of sick kids, from any country, with any illness, some who have been through every medical option in their own countries or several countries, who come to BCH have a place to stay that is as comfortable as possible and all without adding additional burdens on the family. They have an entire staff of translators for every language you can think of to make sure the families can communicate with the doctors and understand their needs.

People come to BCH from all over the world because it's a world class hospital that is a charitable organization. They don't say no. If you walk through the door, they treat your child.

In fact, they have an international center that serves patients from more than 100 countries including coordination of visits, medical records, travel, accommodation, and immigration.

They have a world class research facility that's working to cure some of the worst diseases facing children all over the world. When an American physician cured Polio, was it a cure for only American children? No. It cures them all. I mention this because BCH was the first hospital in the world in 1949 to successfully culture the polio virus. A vital first step in the research that led to Dr. Salk's eventual cure (and were awarded the Nobel Prize for medicine for it). (The same team later when on to culture the measles virus, leading to its vaccine as well). Physician's at BCH were also the first to repair a fatal birth defect in newborns born without heart valves. That's a question of life, not 'hardship.'


BCH is working on cancer research, a host of birth defects. Even PTSD research. It won't just benefit Americans, it will benefit all. Diseases, birth defects, 'hardships' dont' pay attention to borders, politics, or financial well being. And honestly, when you're talking about children none of that matters either.

So, yes. I play for a Hospital in my area that helps kids in my area. But they also help kids all over the world. Over a half MILLION a year. There aren't that many kids in Boston who need help. They come from everywhere.

And you know what? If it was one kid I'd still play for them. Because even one kid facing any kind of illness, even just a simple 'hardship' illness, is one too many.

Fives make tens, tens make twenties, and twenties make hundreds and hundreds quickly become thousands. All the proof you need is in the fact that the average donation is $27 and we're about to crack $16,500 raised thanks to over 600 donations to date.
