If you getting DX issues or want to make sure, reinstall your drivers manually and see if it sorts it.
Earlier Windows you can get DX Redistribution and install it.

Hello,
I suspect that many of these issues are related to the new embedded browser technology, that was the major new tech that was introduced in this update.
From what I'm reading, I think there are 2 classes of problems:
1) 32-bit OS'es are resulting in a client crash
2) Some folks on 64-bin OS'es are seeing the client fail to start
While the end result is the same (you can't play), the cause and fix(s) may be different.
For the 32 bit OS folks:
- If you are in this bucket (of crashing on a 32 bit OS), are reasonably technically savvy, and have a little bit of time to try an experiment for me, please send me a PM.
For the 64 bit OS folks (and potentially the 32 bit ones):
- I see that a couple of folks have had luck with removing d3d9.dll. That dll should not be in there. Do you folks have older installations? Or did you put it there as a workaround at some point in the past?
- I'm not sure if this will help with these problems, but if you need to install/repair DirectX 9, you can get Microsoft's installer for it here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down...ils.aspx?id=35
- In the launcher, click the arrow button -> Options -> Repair tab, you can check the "Reset the game display settings" if you want to run your client under DirectX 9.
To answer the question: how do I change what version of DirectX I'm running with without running the game: edit your UserPreferences.ini file (after making a backup), find the line that says GraphicsCore. The following are the values for the different supported versions of DirectX:
- GraphicsCore=D3D9
- GraphicsCore=D3D10
- GraphicsCore=D3D11
EDIT: Removed the request for volunteers, I have what I need, thanks!

I tried all suggested now and still same clientcrash after chosing server and click on play.
I tried finding d3d9.dll in the game directory to remove it BUT there is no such file as I have never run LoTRO in DX9 anyway.
I tried renaming the whole LoTRO folder in my documents and log in. Get to scroll through the whole EULA again and get an option to download the whole high res textures and chose yes but still nothing acctually seems to download (possibly because I already have it and the option only pops up as the whole directory with preferences and such was renamed).
I get to the same log-in screen, type in my acct, password etc. Get to the screen/window to chose server, chose one and click play and then *bam* crash again as before.
Was even thinking that it might be some plugin. I only run 1 plugins and 1 UI skin, "TitanBar" and "large dressing room", but as I renamed the LoTRO directory in my documents that would have bypassed them, so it wasn't that. In any case my son has the same 2 plugins/UI/skins on the PC he plays on and he can log in.

Never The Spy-Tool Windows 10 Who needs DirectX 12 anyway ??? Vulkan is better. :)
Interesting as I know neither Explorer or Google Chrome are supported under Vista and probably not XP either anymore and You won't get newer versions of those browsers. They still work, just that it's older vesrions of google chrome You have to run and no new Google Chrome updates available for Vista (and probably not XP either).

I'm doing a complete uninstall/reinstall. It's been about 4 or 5 years since I did a fresh install/reinstall, so is probably a good idea anyway. I'll let you know if it helps with my crashing. It'll take some time, though.
I tried editing the ini to 10 and 11, but that doesn't seem to be the issue, though I am on Vista 32 bit. Earlier I had reset my graphic settings using the launcher, so I'm not certain which DX I was using yesterday. My son is using 64 bit Windows 7, and can login, so I can't help out there. I wouldn't say I'm savvy, so I hope someone is offering themselves to be a guinea pig.
More hopefully useful info.
As running Vista 32-bit the latest Google Chrome I could get at the time was Version 49.0.2623.112 m after that Google Chrome stopped supporting Vista and XP it says.
I can still surf, check sites, even updated Flash player the other day, just not get any newer version for Vista and same for XP.

Just in case that is related to the new in-game browser technology.Today, we’re announcing the end of Chrome’s support for Windows XP, as well as Windows Vista, and Mac OS X 10.6, 10.7, and 10.8, since these platforms are no longer actively supported by Microsoft and Apple. Starting April 2016, Chrome will continue to function on these platforms but will no longer receive updates and security fixes.

Just tried on my wife's laptop. Game works fine there - could log in and play. She has Windows 7 Ultimate, 64-bit. Buildt-in graphics chip.
then the embedded browser tech needs to be rolled back as it is flawed
tried these fixes still nothing
No I am not going to reinstall the game unless its a last resort, and I am not moving it to a different folder as it has worked fine every day for 6 years in the one it is in.
And I think that something is tied to DirectX drivers, at least in some part. As I mentioned earlier I did not get your particular message, it just accepted my login credentials and then poofey. Like I never opened the game up. No message, no error. No LOTRO.
the d3d9 file is definitely the problem, at least for some of us. And that file is tied directly to DirectX, and for those of us who ran SweetFX is has to be in the LOTRO directory. But I think it goes much deeper than just a graphics plugin and it definitely was in their patch. I loaded ReShade but I am a bit perturbed that I had to do this when the game worked fine for me until my logout at 2 am this morning. And has been for several years while running SweetFX.
I loaded the game and set to DirectX10 and got some quirky behavior. Reset it to DirectX9 and the quirky behavior is gone. This has been in the last hour as I tinkered with ReShade.
By quirky behavior I mean flashing in game depending upon the direction I turned my character, and transitions were giving me severe contrast fluctuations.
I said this in another thread, and Elle I apologize if it seems I'm addressing other things in addition to your post, but be careful all of you (I include myself as well) in wishing for a 64 bit client. Who knows what problems may occur with such a significant change.
For the record - I would love to see a 64 bit client but I may be considering loving the idea a little bit less after today
eta
I do not recommend reinstalling the client. It did not work for me. The only reason I went with a reinstall is due to another issue I had (system rebuild) a few months ago. I could still play LOTRO because I don't have it saved on the booter, but the Control Panel didn't show it as an installed application. The game functioned perfectly but when I couldn't log in this morning I figured I might as well go and do a clean install. Said install was not the problem though. So there went three hours of my life I can't get back :P

True character is not something shaped from without, or put on, but it is something radiating from within
I can wait 24 hours or so patiently for SSG to resolve this or do a roll back. Now we will know just what kind of caretakers SSG are. There's no better test than resolving problems from an inadequately tested roll out ;-)
I'm having the same issue.
Windows 7 Premium 64 Bit
I can remove d3d9.dll and the game works BUT I need that dll for SweetFX to work. I've gotten so used to SweetFX that I can no longer enjoy the drab grey haze that plague the game for some reason.
Anyone know of a way to get SweetFX to run with current LotRO?
