Question HELP! Text files not transcribed correctly?

    Hello all,

I am getting absolute gibberish in any world notifications or any form of chat message. The letters appear like so:

This includes world announcements, ooc chat, IMs, even player bios...

Could a blue name comment on how I fix this please? Hard to play when I can read a word thats being said .

I have tried restarting my computer, and resetting the graphic options to no avail.

    Thanks,

    Throllo

Actually though... I cant even rename my burglar's Toolkit to "Toolkit" because it thinks its vulgar :O.

Something got messed up, and I'm clueless as to what . Chat channels on Live work like normal.

    1. Does it matter if the profanity filter is enabled or disabled?
    2. What is your operating system?

The only thing that I can think of is to double-check that you have the correct language specified in the Launcher. Immediately to the right of the "Support" button is a language button. Make sure it's set correctly.

I'm not sure if the Windows language/keyboard setting affects LotRO at all, but that is another possibility.

    1) Profanity filter makes no difference
    2) I am using Mac OS Sierra

I would add that the Live launcher and game work TOTALLY fine. Its only a beta client issue...

    Thanks,

I created a new character, chose to randomize the name ("Dacfar"), and got a warning message about the name containing profanity.

I'm on PC, so I doubt this is specific to the Mac client.

It reminds me of a problem I saw in a piece of tax software of all things years ago that would have text output like this if the proper font file was not working/accessible.

I'm painstakingly redownloading the whole client for BR at the moment... will see if that makes a difference at all.

I noticed it was nigh on impossible to create a character name that wasn't considered profanity. In the end, I was pulling names from the ether, completely randomly put together noises. I can't recall all the combinations I used, but I couldn't see anything remotely profane to trigger the warning messages. It struck me as a little off, but never caught on that it could actually be an issue. This thread seems to indicate that something is a little off.

I'm also a PC user, so I wouldn't say it's a Mac client only issue.

Glad to hear someone else has a similar issue... Its frustrating that after waiting for 9500 files to process... the BR client still gives me gibberish instead of letters.

Not sure what was changed, but Live client still works for the time being. Maybe my transfers got corrupted? idk.

If it's just false positives from the profanity filter, you can turn off the profanity filter in the options panel.

I wish that were the case... profanity filter off does nothing on my end. Still just gibberish.

I think you are correct about the false positives though...

For most of the last two years, my 7th LI slot has been occupied by various LI entitled "Severn", because the system kept telling me that "Seven" wasnt allowed. "Seven" is now allowed, but due to the butterfly effect.............

As best I have been able to tell -- the Problem is CONSTANT for the Mac Client, and apparently random for the PC client.

The profanity filter on or off has no effect on the display.

Item Names, such as when your receive a Hobbit Present, are clean but the "you have received" part is "filtered-out.

The problem does appear in all chat windows.

The profanity filter problem on Macs should be fixed for the next Bullroarer preview. If you're interested in the technical details, the problem arose because I was unaware of the nuance that Macs treat wide-characters as 4-bytes instead of 2.

THANK YOU!!!! I'm sure most Mac players would agree in expressing appreciation for the prompt response to the issue on your part. +[Brownie Points] for you, Silorien . And for Cordovan too. Looking forward to next weekend's testing when I can actually read what's going on in chat, and run around in a fellowship haha.

    Again, many thanks.

It's interesting to read the explanation for a defect. I can understand how that one got through. This is exactly the kind of issue that Bullroarer is intended to detect

Quite interesting. It thows much light on the issues surrounding an upgrade to a 64-bit client.
That "wchar" issue is really, really old.
