I know someone who had a lot of trouble with that one because he didn't recognize the reference, but I caught it as soon as I read it. Although I didn't immediately remember whether it was a drake or worm. I think it was a flying one, because it ended up crushing an entire mountain range when it was killed if I remember correctly.

Anyway, this has been a fun thread to read, and I hope to find more of these hidden nuggets in the game.
Yeah, I remember that quest. The only reason I knew Ancalagon was a dragon was because he's mentioned in The Fellowship of the Ring, when Gandalf is telling Frodo about the Ring. Gandalf mentions that "nor was there ever any dragon, not even Ancalagon the Black, who could have harmed the One Ring,...." (The Fellowship of the Ring, The Shadow of the Past) Although for some bizarre reason, when I was doing the quest, I was thinking Elrond said the line during his council.
Sorry, I'm out of clever sayings for sigs. :(

Good call. I haven't seen the same one in Moria--only the one in GT. I never could guess what it was since I assumed it was an event in GT. The Moria reference makes sense, however.

Oh, okay. That's good to know. I totally forgot that it was even mentioned in LotR. Been so long since I read the books. Need to do it again sometime. Reading over this thread, it does seem like the developers certainly paid attention to details in the books and incorporated them.

well the weapon you get from a book quest in the troll shaws( i believe it's the one when you have to search the 3 caves) the sword glows blue when trolls are near apparently because it does extra damage to troll- not sure if all other weapons are like this... just thought it was kind of neat

Yes, weapons with damage to a particular type of creature glow blue when in range of that kind of creature (I used a beast-killing dagger on my hobbit to navigate through a wolf-infested field at night when my monitor was going out. It was so dark I could barely see, so whenever my dagger glowed blue, I shifted direction and made it through without fighting.)

Well, not ALL weapons glow when in proximity to what they do extra damage to.

    Dagoron comes to mind.

I like how you can push the skaters in Forochel over, and they say "Hey, watch where you're going" or something like that.

When I first learned that trick, I just did it like ten times in a row.

Well, i have no idea if this has been said before, not gonna read all pages to check. Anyway, i was in forochel helping some kinmates about to do 13.9, and this one lossoth npc walked by, and made a monty python reference.

for those who don't get the reference, in the opening credits of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, there was text at the bottom of the screen that would say random lines misspelled. Anyway, one of the lines was saying something similar to " my sister was bit by a moose". So seeing this npc, i assumed norsu means moose.

Re: Hidden Nuggets we see all the time...

I've searched the forums and can't seem to find anything on this one I just saw today.

It's a hidden door behind the poisoned waterfall in Gurthlin Angmar. The location is 6.6N, 29.9W.

To get there it's pretty tough. As you head West from the dwarf camp into Imlad Balchorth you need to continue to follow the middle path through. There are spirits in non-poisonous pools in the area and the path narrows down a bit. Eventually you'll come to a big drop off where you can see poison water below.

You need to jump off this ledge and move as much as possible to the right. You need to land on the stone archway where the water runs out of.

Once one the stone archway move to the far side of the water and jump off.

You'll be able to run around the edge of the lake until you get to some broken stairs leading into the water. You can run and jump up onto the stairs. It's difficult but you can do it.

On the other side of the stairs you will be able to continue along the lake and should quickly see some more broken stairs in the lake itself. There is some rubble you can jump onto to reach it. Once on these stairs cross to the other side of the water and you will be near the waterfall.

I found you could walk through the water splashing across the stone without getting instant death. If you turn and look into the waterfall you will notice a doorway, like the doorway into a mine.

Unfortunately you can't interact with it. If you get too close, the poisoned water will hit you.

Norsu are mammoths, hirvi are elk, but I'm sure the reference is correct.

Hirvi in-game just refers to the elk, but in Finnish is also can mean deer or moose. They're all just deer of different sizes after all.

Norsu means elephant, and mammutti is mammoths, and both appear in game. Nothing wrong with synonyms. I found it interesting that the "Norsu-hauta" area near the dwarf settlement translates to "elephant graveyard".

Well, it, um, is. The name of the world of which Middle-earth is a continent is called Arda, and after the destruction of Númenor (which is Atlantë in Quenya) Arda was bent and the Undying Lands were removed from the circles of the world (think of it as a flat plane bending and becoming round, and one continent on it not going with it and floating above it). Middle-earth became Britain and lots of other lands were created. (If you look on a satellite map at Britain you'll see lots of geographic similarities with Middle-earth.)

Not much of a hidden nugget, but havent seen any moria posts yet so just gonna say this -- love the fact that the bridge of Khazad Dum is broken, love that the chamber of mazurbel (or however you spell it) has been broken half-way by the balrog, and absolutely love the epic quest where you need to go down to the Foundations of Stone to the bridge shard and find gandalf's hat was a real treat for me!

Also, if any devs are reading this I would like to ask why when you jump off the bridge of Khazad Dum you dont fall into the foundations of stone...it's been proved that that's where the bridge eventually falls down to with the bridge shard and Gandalf's hat so just thought it a bit weird that instead you just fall and die on regular ground, however steep it may be (even if the fall would kill you anyway).

    Bring on the Moria nuggets!

There's a dwarven "globe of Arda" on the back of the geode below Dolven-View (I'm linking rather than showing in post because it's a big file). I'm surprised no one seems to have posted this yet.

The black cube is Moria. Other major features of the world are labeled in Cirth.

A minor thing, not lore AFAIK, but I enjoyed it; there are three birds at the craft area of Rivendell that chase each other by flying from one statue/pillar to another.

I noticed a unique bird song while curing some hides, and looked up when I saw their tiny shadows darting over the ground.

I'm sure it's been mentioned but I don't want to sift through 55 pages of chatter; how about the Giant in the Brandy Hills, ala 'Giant Problems'?

I'll have to find the exact reference but at one point one Hobbit talks about there being Giants north of Buckland, to which all of the other Hobbits call him 'cracked' or something. Turns out he was right thanks to Turbine. Also, if I'm not mistaken for the winter fest quest you have to get seven signatures to kick Lobelia off the party committee. In the first chapter it talks about Bilbo's will needing seven signatures to make Frodo his official heir, per hobbit custom.

Don't know if this exists anywhere else, but I was on my rounds of the inns of the Shire, and while standing around the Ivy Bush, I noticed a butterfly flitting around outside.

I've never seen butterflies anywhere else that I can recall. The birds at Rivendell reminded me of this. Anyone seen them elsewhere?

I noticed this in MoM Beta, but have never seen any similar butterflies anywhere else in the world. Very peculiar, but very nice.
