So, as I see, this message keeps showing after years, confusing the users, as it just happened to me.

¿Is it that hard to show a message like "Servers down - Try later" or something like that?

I was about to reinstall the entire game...

I just got this message, thought my installation was corrupted, since I had been getting error codes that shut down my game client earlier, and deleted the whole game to install it again... Only to find that it's about the friggin' login D:

    Thanks SS...

And since we're here, getting game crippling errors just for moving items around is not cool. How much did you skimp on the servers? What's this running on? a microwave oven?
I might subscribe if the game worked at least 90% of the time. Oh and the FPS lag that cannot be solved with a monstrous computer don't help your case. @devs

No wonder the game is losing players. Might've gotten a little player base boost what with the new series, but once they experience these horrors, I don't think so. Just my two cents.

...the servers are down for a patch and restart. It's not about "friggin' login" and there's nothing for you to repair on your end. Just have some patience and you'll be able to play later today once the servers come back up.

Also, if you have not yet moved to the 64-bit client, you might want to do so now. It will improve your play experience in a significant manner and you're going to have to move off the 32-bit client by the end of the calendar year anyway because SSG's current plans are to disable its ability to connect to the servers on 01 January 2023:
    https://www.lotro.com/update-notes/l...lease-notes-en
We will begin the process of ending support for the 32-bit versions of the game client for The Lord of the Rings Online on May 18th, 2022. The 32-bit clients will continue to be supported until January 1st, 2023. In the meantime, some features may not work fully on the 32-bit clients. We recommend all players change their settings in the game launch to switch to the 64-bit game client. This is done by pressing the down arrow button at the top of the launcher, then selecting Options.
If you are currently running the so-called "Mac Client" it's a little more involved because the version of WINE included with the "Mac Client" is not able to run the 64-bit LOTRO game client. See other threads here in the Mac Technical Support Forum for options, or start your own thread and I'll be happy to provide assistance to accommodate your specific needs.

Still, it wouldn't require much effort to make the error message into something like "Maintenance!" or some such...

Seriously. Then we wouldn't be dealing with this thread or ones like it every week.

I tried to log in a few minutes ago and got "Missing required configuration value for [URL.DownloadFilesList]. Someone said they uninstalled and reinstalled. I did this and now getting "Failed to read authentication response [err: unexpected end of file][line: 1][col: 1].

    Nice.

Well, guess the maintenance will be running a while longer.

The servers are down for maintenance, Judah. You didn't need to reinstall. (Next time "someone" tells you to reinstall, check the forums here first.) The game will patch itself up the next time you attempt to launch it, after 2pm EDT today when the maintenance is expected to be complete. You should then be able to play.

Yes, something should appear in the LOTRO Launcher application to explain this rather than some dense technical note that means nothing to most people.

The patch server is up now. It was a very small patch. That, though, does not mean that the game worlds are open yet.

Welp, happening to me today (never seen it before) and I can't find anything about an update, either on lotrostatus or forums or the steam page. Maybe an unscheduled hotfix for "before the shadow" but boy do they really need a better error message

It's the usual Wednesday morning maintenance. And a patch day, too:

Still can't believe this has been a recurring question for 10+ years and they haven't updated the error message yet :/

Some people have reported a more human-friendly message in the LOTRO Launcher application during today's downtime:
    https://forums.lotro.com/forums/show...-but-thank-you
"Servers may be down for maintenance/update at this time."

But others – such as yourself – reported that they didn't see that, just the usual jumble of nerdlish that means nothing to a typical player. So they might have tried to implement something more useful today but didn't roll it out completely. Let's see what happens next week!

I did see a "servers down for maintenance" message when i first logged in today! So that's a start lol. Once I hit "continue" and logged in, I got the same authentication error, but oh well. At least we're getting somewhere
