You and lots and lots of other people. There are a bunch of threads on this topic and there hasn't been much progress, from what I can see. The same thing happened to a lot of people during the Beta on Bullroarer. On Bullroarer, I had to completely uninstall and redownload/install the client. :-/

It patched, but didnt rebuild the missing .dat.

Move this file AND its associated .dat to somewhere else.

For me it was these two files 'client_gamelogic.dat' and 'client_gamelogic.dat.jrnl'.

    Cheers.
This is working for me. At 64% update game data right now. Different files, but related.

People CAN log in, and I might mention that these 'Other' online games aren't currently going through a period of stressful patching. There is a huge difference.

I managed to finally finish updating LOTRO. I am running LOTRO on a Macbook with OS Lion version 10.7.5, using Pylotro with Crossover. I have 8 gigs of RAM and with the last LOTRO and Crossover updates, I found random crashing starting to occur, usually associated with transitioning. That problem has been identified with memory leaks using DX10/11, but mine was always set to DX9. My wife has a Macbook that is a year older with a slightly older operating system (I am not sure what it is as I am overseas at the moment) and she was having no problems with crashing before the RoR update. However, when I try to boot up the game now, I get the following error message:

The program LORO.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

    Here's the error information:

Any thoughts from more computer savvy people than me?

Sorry, but "stressful patching" is an excuse. I will not believe for 1 moment they are getting hundreds of thousands of players patching this update. If this was GW2 opening day, then maybe, but not LOTRO. Regardless of your opinion, Turbine should be on top of their network issues that is causing a large number of players to not be able to play their game after this amount of time has passed.

Those who are able to verify their files and get all the updates and play are very lucky. Please do not come here defending this deficiency of Turbine's part or nit pick other poster's threads. I would very much like to play like all the other lucky ones, however having this issue persist even after going through so many other steps and trying at various hours through out the day and night with no avail, does become very frustrating for anyone who is experiencing this issue still.

If you are unable to understand the frustration, please do not post here nit picking what other ppl are experiencing. Thanks

    - I posted on my initial post, that I saw this and not going to monkey around with firewall settings, or moving files around. I have clearly stated the steps I have taken, including reinstalling from a fresh download, and even trying the repair feature. Unless a Turbine Tech member posts steps, I am not going to risk creating other issues involving my firewall. It should not even be needed especially when myself and many other players could play just fine Sunday night (Oct 14).

if y looked around, you will find an answer.

Simply deleting DAT files , there are 13 at the lotro folder.

It would be advisedly to keep a copy of them. However, try to delete only Client_anim, Client_cell_2, Client_gamelogic,Client_local_ English and Client_map_2 if exists .

Then restart you PC OR delete everything at temp folder.
you can use Run then type %temp%

hope it will work for you

It's a partial fix anyway. The update installed and took me to the login screen. After I put my password, I got a "Missing .dat files". I put the two files I stored in a temp folder back, and relaunched the client. I am now back at examine game data again.

I guess this was some progress.

    Restart your computer.

Simple and worth a try. It was the thing that worked for me.

I think something weird was happening with a cache of some sort.

I did deleted DAT files, and it did NOT work,

Contact Technician Support or wait few days.
I started to think that all of this due to so many people trying to patch at the same time.

The thread about moving certain files around worked until a certain point where I spent about 1 hour with no download at all. Then my computer crashed and I am trying to sort out the files as I can no longer download,

I've had some success with moving around .dat files, but the 'problem' files seem to be either client_general.dat or client_gamelogic.dat. One of these two is glitchy when it comes to "examine game data". When removed you can log in, but when I do I then get the [201] error, meaning the game can't find the (updated) .dat files. I credit this to not having updated them entirely.

Removing the bunch of .dat files to a separate folder does work... sometimes. I've gotten the system to update _cell.dat, _map_2.dat, _sounds.dat, _surface.dat, and _local_English.dat. The rest of the files are not working as such. I'll keep trying, but I'd really like this issue solved. This is NOT fun. And yes, I have filed a ticket.

While I got through the lengthy examine game data stuff, my LOTRO runs so bad that I can't play much if at all.

The game ran better in the Beta, whoever messed this up really needs to apologize!

Wow, simply amazing. You have a problem, blue asks you to submit a ticket so they can get your computer specs, and THAT was your response? Do you act this way when your car has a problem? I can just see you screaming on the phone "Fix It!!!" and when the repair guy asks you to bring the car in so he can take a look you cry "Unacceptable!"

I don't have this issue with the game. That means it isn't a universal problem and Turbine needs technical specs from people who have the problem (like you) so they can figure out how to fix it. "that not simple enough for you?"

    -----------------

I did submit a ticket and responded back to it with information of the steps I took. One thing that I saw that was of interest, is that it states while we may not use Internet Explorer, it was required, as your game shares info with it? Sorry, but I have not had IE installed on my system for quite some time, after finding many intrusive issues with it trying to obtain data from my system, which I will never authorize.

My confusion is, how can Turbine demand players have IE installed, when people are not required to use it or have it installed on their system? I was able to log in and play LOTRO just fine last week without IE on my system.

Peoples privacy is very important in today's age. I have full control over Mozilla Firefox, but IE keeps trying to do updates or obtain information, even when I turn features off. I believe a lot of that has to do with Microsoft's security update downloads, which I rarely ever allow to download or install, as I have found many times these "features" turn things back on within IE which I had turned off. This is why I uninstalled IE, and will never install it again.

So if Turbine is telling its customers that we are required to have a Microsoft product such as IE installed on my system in order to play your games, even after the fact that I was able to play with int uninstalled, I will simply pass and not worry about LOTRO or any other Turbine game again, which would be really unfortunate as I have enjoyed the times I have played =(

I included all the information on my response to your tech support team involving my ticket# 24001-341546

Time to write about my current experience, and boy is it a doosey! I managed to update just fine on the morning of RoR going live. However, it took me about 15 hrs after that to be able to log in. I simply sat and watched my machine at Examining....for like, ever. Then it let me in! (hooray)

    Or I thought hooray.

I go to char screen, select my Hunter, and was VERY excited! I wait the usual time to get into the game world. Then, did my world ever get rocked....I got disconnected after 2 minutes. Never happened before, so I figured uh oh, then relogged.

Two minutes later, I got disconnected again. So, even though I am fully patched, something is still wrong. If my client has become corrupted due to the patch, then I refuse to re-download everything only to have that happen again. So, I decided to put this lovely game down for a while.

    Time for karma.

So, I decided to buy a new video card for my custom machine thats about 4 years old. (best/worst mistake I made)

Keystone Kops time for me. Vid card didnt fit since sound card was in the next slot, so I moved stuff around, put vid card in and POOF, I think motherboard fried. So machine is in the shop, perhaps about to get a large upgrade.

I have a spare Internet-only machine so at least I can communicate here.

Moral of the story? If an MMO gives you a patch that messes your machine up, stop playing the game till the issues are fixed. That is what I have done and will move on to a mindless game that is inferior to LotRO, but at least stable enough to not baff your client. I shall check in from time to time, and if things are fixed, and perhaps a new client is released, I shall return to this glorious game, since I have money invested. Good luck to everyone, I love LotRO more than any other game.

Any thoughts from more computer savvy people than me?

What you are encountering is a "known bug." (Since the beginning of the Betas.) Basically, Turbine made changes to the Windows client which were incompatible with any known version of WINE, i.e. CrossOver.

It has nothing to do with DX9/10/11.

Late yesterday WINEhq came up with a fix which applies to the latest version of WINE. At the moment folks are trying to see if it can be retrofitted to the version of WINE which CrossOver uses. Once that works, unless you want to compile and link your own copy of WINE, Codeweavers has to provide an updated version of CrossOver.

BTW, you should have been able to patch with no problems. And you should be able to re-run the patch function multiple times with no problems. If you are having such problems, it is probably a corrupt .jnl file. Quit PyLotRO, Erase any you find in your bottle and re-launch PyLotRO, then patch again.

There is a Mac Client "in the wings." It's release was delayed from the 15th. No ETA announced for the actual release.

If you are still stuck at Examine Programs, or are otherwise experiencing errors after patching Rohan, try the following:

    1. Close the game launcher if it is open.
    2. Open the game installation directory ('C:\Program Files (x86)\Turbine\The Lord of the Rings Online' by default).
    3. At the top of this window sort by file type by clicking "Type".
    4. You should see 13-14 .DAT files listed. Right-click each of these files individually and select “Restore previous version”. Please note that some files may not have previous versions available. From the available dates, select any previous version before 10/15 and click Restore.
    5. If restore is not available as an option, select Copy instead. You can copy the restore of this file to another location (such as your desktop) and then manually move it into your game installation directory.

After doing this for each dat file, restart the launcher and allow the game to patch again. Feel free to detail whether these steps worked for you or not in this thread. I would also recommend submitting a help request using the link in my signature if your issues persist after the steps above and you have not done so already.

I submitted a help ticket a little while ago.

Anyway, I tried your suggestions. None of my .DAT files (11 of them) have the "Restore previous version" option. So it sounds like you are wanting in step 5 to just copy them to a different folder (like the desktop) to force the launcher to redownload/repatch those files? Similar to a fix that's floating around the forums currently?

Okay, well, I tried that earlier. No joy. It "patches" and asks me to log in. I put in my password, select my server, and then I get the 201 error:

Can't open the data files. Check that they exist and that you have permission to write to them. The program will now exit. [201]

Moving the same .DAT files back to the original folder just sends it back into the endless Examine Game Data step.

    *edit*
PS: just to be clear, after the 201 error I deleted the "new" .DAT files before putting the old ones back. Only 3 files of the original 13ish were "redownloaded": client_cell_2, client_map_2 and client_local_English. Using your steps the other .DAT files were not restored, which I suppose is why I got the 201 error. The game was looking for those files, and they weren't there, even though the launcher thought they were. And, as I said, deleting the 3 "new" files and putting the original 11 files back in put me back at Examine Game Data.

    *edit 2*
Hm... the "fix" that floated around the forums earlier didn't mention the unins000, unins001 or unins002 .DAT files. I didn't even realize they are there. I'll try removing those 3 as well as the other 11 (14 in all) and see if that works...

I do appreciate the quick follow up from you guys in here! I am a little confused though with your instructions, starting at 5.

None of my dat files have any previous versions to go back to, they are all showing 10/13/2012, with client_gamelogic showing 10/15/2012.

I copied all these files into a new folder on my desktop, am I supposed to delete the data files now from my install directory and allow the game client to re-download 12+ gigs?!? I certainly hope not, but wanted some clarification on what exactly you want me to do once I have copied all the dat files to a new folder.
