(Sorry about being gone for a week, was away from internet)

This one is likely pretty obvious:

I am the greatest of my kind,
    Highest above the rest,
And if you look closely you will find,
That I am not the best.

    I'll post an example/first riddle:

    Night-time empty gapes

    . . . . . . . .

Yes, I´d like them to be more of the style of "Riddles in the dark", but limited to riddles that fit into Tolkiens world as a riddle said by someone and based on "general kmowledge", if you get my meaning

    . . . . . . . .

For this riddle "shoes" is the right answer, although a hobbit would probably have some difficulties with this ridddle :-)
I'm coming into this thread late and commenting on months-old posts before reading very far into the thread. Sorry, I know. . .bad form.

I, too, first thought "bed". Realizing that that was backwards, considered "shoes". Then I thought that a more specifically Tolkien-related answer would be "troll cave".

    Would Angrist fit the bill?

Revered more than most of the glorious host,
Remembered still by those who tarry,
Both inland and out along the coast,
They sing of her in voices most merry.

    Shining hand
    Kin denied
    Far hearing
    Dread standard

One of the lines draws on material from Unfinished Tales. However, it isn't essential to the riddle and the rest is decipherable from the canon texts.

This name is one thrice used in the works
First for the slayer of shadow and flame
Second for a restoring a tower in his name
Third for authorizing an infamous night time raid
And for being the father of the one who was last
