It's about time someone stepped up to the plate and told the real story. Me, I am just waiting for the fix to occur so I can get on with my adventure in lotro... That might be awhile! O=='=::

IIRC, somewhere in the neighborhood of 16 GB disk space and at least 4 gig of ram. Eight would be better.
Don't quote those numbers, but I think they're in the ball park.

There is a compatibility check you can perform prior to the upgrade that will identify potential issues you may have if you install Win 7.
Good luck if you go forward with it. I'd get Win 7 Pro if you can, but that's just my personal preference :)
That's only the begging of the issue of an upgrade for me. I still have alot of programs I'm comfortable with like gif creators, older versions of PhotoShop that I once bought that will not work on 64-bit or even win 7 32-bit. Sometimes because I can't find my old install CD's like with Photoshop, so if I format and reinstall a new O/S I would have to buy a new license and lose that I paid for a full version of PhotoShop back in the days (which cost alot) that still works with all the functions I require. I'm not a fan of online services that Adobe now use for license and You end up with a monthly fee as I prefer to pay for things once and for all and it's mine and I can use it as I see fit. Even offline if o0ut on a boat or in a cabin in the woods. That has always been my philiosophy to have as few monthly bills as possible, no loans or credits and only buy what I can pay for. That way the items are mine no matter what financial situation I have in the future and no debts or loan to pay off. Tons of other programs as well that will not work. Also as You said printers and Scanners that don't have new drivers if I get another O/S or 64-bit.
It is cheaper for me to buy a new PC and keep my old for all that. I'm sure others have similar situation or reasons.
We even have another PC with Win7 64-bit that my son plays on. However I can not play atm on this machine unless I use that and we can definetly not play together anymore. I have even bought parts for a new PC, i7 Skylake (as kabylake would force me to ue win10), GTX 1070 6GB etc, even a full Win 7 Pro original install disc with box and all but I haven't had time to put it together yet. All that is irrelevant however as this is not just about me but about alot of others as is seen in this thread and friends I know who haven't even posted here as they don't frequent the forums. Many of them play LoTRO simply because they can not afford to upgrade or even know how to do. They stuck with LoTRO as they can play that. Also getting an official Win 7 is not that easy anymore unless You want to risk getting scammed by some online key-seller site. I bought my Win 7 Pro disc from a retailer before Microsoft halted sale of Win 7 as I knew I would need it in the future. Win 8 and 10 are big No No for me.
You are a person that thinks exactly like I do. I am still using Photoshop 7 and other "relics" of software legend on my Win 7 Pro 64 bit machine. :D
Why? Because they still do just about everything I need to do and they've long been paid for :D
I am totally with you on the Win 10 issue. Microsoft is insisting that they will crawl up whatever orifice they see fit. That's what proctologists are for, not OS manufacturers LOL
well,i will have problem with that 4gb of ram. xD
well,in fact im looking for a new pc rather then the win 7 instalation thing, have my favourite in https://www.alza.sk/hp-pavilion-510?dq=4457197
still happening denying use of the game
FIX IT
Where did i say 'future proof'? I said decent and 'Bomb Proof' (wanted to say 'strong and stable' but someone is using that phrase atm' :D )
BTW windows 7 support ends 2020 so that not future proof and players currently using windows 7 experience issues after this patch. Mind you having said that £15 for 3 years stable OS is nice, made me think about upgrading the old XP machine I have, thanks.
£500 can get Intel5 quad 8Gb ram DDR3 GTX1050 m which for games like Lotro will be fine.
That was the way it already was working (asking you to launch an external browser, which would be the default one(IE on my OS) which for me didnt quite work with an ancient unupdated IE, but I could cut-n-paste the encoded link URL into Chrome to access the Store the few times I use it).
Having the client ABORT and deny use of the game - I don't recall that happening in the 9 years Ive played this game.
Windows 10, 64-bit, Steam version
I dont have any SweetFx, d3d9.dll file or any other plug--in, but launcher still crashes to desktop :(:(
I completely understand that SSG is under no obligation to insure playability of the game on outdated systems such as mine (Vista 64-bit). If I had the extra money right now, I would get a better system, but I don't. I'm hoping that SSG will indeed try to find a solution for this, and believe that they will make a decent effort to do so for at least two reasons: (1) out of courtesy to long-time customers and (2) out of realization that a portion of their paying base simply will be lost if a solution can't be found. Obviously, I'm hoping they succeed.
There is a bit of sadness realizing that after 10 years of play and struggles and triumphs and questing and following in the footsteps of the fellowship that I (and many others) might not make it to Mordor after all when we're at the very gate. I hope that SSG understands how much emotional investment many of us have put into this game (whether or not that's healthy is another story), and I think they do.
Ill give them some elbow room before I turn to social media to discuss it. I think there is substantial information as to what the cause of the problem is.
It wasn't that long ago that Turbine switched the help system and locked out WinXP users, then took their sweet time to implement a fix (a fix which someone else provided to the third party control provider some time before). I think SSG is unlikely to do that. LOTRO's use base is likely higher than its going to be at any time in the future. They don't need the bad press. But they could garner some good press by showing us they aren't going to break backwards compatibility.
Good News !!!
Sorry for large letters and colour but I didn't want anyone to miss this.
I hope I'm not jumping any gun here but I know alot of You are just sitting there waiting for some information and bite Your nails.
I will not disclose any details from any PM's or anything like that but I have been testing new files sent to me by staff and I have been in game on my Vista 32-bit.
So I simply wanted to confirm that they are indeed working on it and has been working on it and HUGE progress have been made. They had acctually sent me the info and d/l links to the files quite a few hours ago but I have been in and out and PC only hooked up to TV and did see msg's after a few hrs. So they have been working fast today.
It took a little fiddling to implement the files into my directory but not alot and acctually fairly easy and I got a good description on how to do it. I am no PC expert even if I'm not totally n00b either but most will be able to do this if I could. Also they might roll it out in some other way so You dont need to do anything but get an update and it all does itself. I do not know that part but I'm sure they will roll it out as soon as they are confident on how to implement it as easily as possible.
However I will leave any official statements and information as how to proceed to staff of course. I am just happy they could use me and if this will help everyone to play the game no matter if on older PC and O/S noone is happier than me. :)
My part was very small and simply allowing them to use me to test it on my old PC. All credit goes to SSG for doing this.
the post you quote me on is from yesterday before SSG even told us what the problem was. Many of the developers from turbine joined SSG during the switch so don't discount them acting that way just yet. I do believe about 30 % of the LOTRO player base uses XP, Linux and Vista and I do hope the Devs do not just toss us away. However with my past experiences with developers .... well most don't care about players as long as the money keeps rolling in. In one game I played for a short time not long ago there was a running joke. "If you want to get immediate response to your ticket type, "The game will not accept my Credit card info when i try to make a purchase". As I said in a post earlier "we will see what happens, I have no given up hope of a fix yet."
As I wrote in same post "I have been in game on my Vista 32-bit". If the fix works on that it will probably work on XP as well since it seems it was the same problems with Chromium Embedded Framework not supported on those older O/S.
As for Linux users I hope this fix will solve it for them too as it seems to be the same problem that caused it for them as well.
On our other PC running Win 7 64-bit there have been no issues. Most who had issues on Win 7 64-bit seems to be due to them having a 3rd part program called Sweet FX installed and it having installed (put) some files in the default LoTRO directory. Something out of control of SSG and the users had to remove those files and LoTRO would work on Win7 again.
I keep checking the dev tracker from time to time to see what if any progress has been made to address this problem. I want to thank Lord Funk for the update but really want to hear from SSG. I have also been checking facebook and twitter but to no avail. The last post here was from Cordovan almost twenty four hours ago. It would really be nice to get an official status report. I also noticed that the two most recent official threads had to do with mob bosses being too strong and the tenth anniversary sound track. Now that you have taken care of those would you please update us on your progress in fixing this problem. In the mean time, I am looking at getting a new computer system.
thanks
What new O/S are You reffering to ??? Linux, win7, win8 or win10 ???
Hopefully this fix will solve it for Linux users as well.
As far as Win 7, 8 or 10 having any isues that was, from what I understand, due to those users having installed SweetFX and some files it had put in the default LoTRO directory. Once those files were removed I think they could run LoTRO without any problems again. If people still have issues on newer O/S and do not have that installed or those faulty files, keep SSG informed so they can find any more issues. Possibly this fix can be used for others not just XP and Vista in case anyone is having problems even in other O/S.
As I said I will not delve too deep into it as I'm not that much of an expert and I do NOT work for SSG. I don't want to overstep any boundaries here. I'll let them give more detailed info. :)
In case you missed it this was posted for those having trouble launching the game client https://www.lotro.com/forums/showthr...ssues-Solution
Win XP/Vista launcher workaround posted in Announcements. Worked for my Vista x32.
Well, the fix isn't working for me at all. I can download the "awesomium" file okay, but the other one is a .config file and it won't download (or I'm too ignorant to know how). On top of that, when I go to find my LOTRO installation directory, IT'S NOT THERE. No where on my pc, I kid you not. And I've been playing the game on this particular pc (Vista 64 bit) for NINE years. So there is nothing about this "fix" that is working for me. Plus which, I'm not real pc savvy, so even if I got that .config file to work--and found the LOTRO installation directory--I don't think I'd get very far. SEEMS TO ME THEY NEED TO FIX THIS DARN THING AND STOP MAKING ME PLAY PC TECH. :( :( :(
Checking in to confirm that the proposed fix for Vista and XP also works for Linux/Wine. Thank you, Standing Stone Games! :D
https://www.lotro.com/forums/showthr...ssues-Solution
Works for Linux/Wine, too :)
Worked on my old PC with 64-bit Vista. Thanks, SSG, for the quick workaround!
Just click on the links or choose open link in new tab to start download - no problems when I tried that on my x32 Vista.
LOTRO directory can be found by clicking on Start and typing Lord of the rings in the search box. Unless you changed the name of the folder, it has be there. Backup your TurbineLauncher.exe.config file by making a copy of it and saving it somewhere else.
If you still have problems, ask here or maybe you have a tech savvy friend to help you.
Thank You and no real need to thank me. My part was small by simply offering to test any workarounds/fixes that SSG wanted to test out on anyone running an older O/S and 32-bit. One of my machine is also affected by this and most of my friends run older machines as well so I was more than happy to offer my help. The first quick fix I tested last night did not work but todays new fixes did work. So I know they jumped straight into trying to fix this already last night European time, late afternoon US time. SSG did not waste any time trying to find a solution. There might have been others testing the fixes as well before official release. Note that the fixes are temporary and I did notice a bit slower loading into game as well as slower loading of the characters on character selection screen. However that is a small price to pay to be able to play again. Once inside the game it seems all is running as usual. No noticeable slow downs, not even when loading new areas. The store will once again open in an external browser. This fix uses a different launcher and seems to bypass the new Chromium Embedded technology that XP and Vista does not support.
I point out again that the big credit goes to SSG for tireless work to fix this !!! I am usually very critical and cynical of nature but in this case it is important to note that SSG was quick to acknoweldge the problem, respond and gather information to isolate the problem. Taking inputs even letting player(s) test the fixes and roll it out as fast as possible. As easy as it is to critisize negatively it is important to also give credit when and were credit is due. I tip my beanie hat to SSG for this one. Well done SSG !!! :)
I'm glad it's out for others to get now as well. As it's now official I don't think I overstep anything by saying that it looks as if it's more or less the same fix that I tested for SSG earlier today upon request.
- The first time loading the game You will not be able to hit esc to skip the SSG logo or that other static screen but the times You log in after this You will be able to.
- Also my Firewall and anti-virus came up with warnings to not allow these files access as it had no previous knoweledge of the files but all i did was chose always allow and the game loaded just fine. Some might need to set these rules manually depending on Your Firewall or anti-virus. I will probably manually tweak my Firwall Rules for these files now as well but upon testing I just allowed them to always pass.
I'm just so happy that more people with older O/S and PC's, even Linux users, yay, can play LoTRO again, as well as my son and I being able to play together once more.
Hi, thanks for responding. I'm not so bad I don't now how to run a search (LOL), but yeah, the only thing that comes up is the shortcut to launch the game itself, or "Uninstall The Lord of the Rings Online" I kid you not. And when I try to download the "her.exe.config" file, it asks me where I want to place it and I have NO idea in heaven or on earth what I'm supposed to choose to do that--AOL?? Internet?? Zune?? All crazy, stupid choices as far as I can see.
So here I sit, with one file that won't open and an installation directory that apparently doesn't exist. And no PC tech savvy person handy. *cries*
What I think is that they need to fix the darn thing so *I* don't have to!! :(
Thanks again for replying. *returns to waiting for fix* :/
Aelnyana, go to this chat room, and I can help you: http://www.chatzy.com/12653849605819
Edit: I guess he/she wasn't interested. Didn't show up.
;) I know it's frustrating when our dumb PCs don't make any sense.
Forget search - go into your hard drive-Program Files-Turbine(or StandingStone, I have an old install)-Lord of the rings. That's the directory you want.
Find and copy the config file somewhere else.
When the downloaded config file asks for location, give it the above one, in the Lord of the rings folder folder.
Or chat with Thurallor, he may be able to help you
I wonder if the links are not working properly in your browser. Please try copying the text between the quotes below and pasting into your browser navigation field.
The files should download into your Downloads folder automatically or pop up a dialog asking you where to put the file. This worked for me in IE, Firefox, and Chrome.
To find your installation directory, try right clicking your "The Lord of the Rings Online" shortcut and select "properties". In the window that opens, you should see a "Target" and a "Start in" location, both of which should point to your installation folder.
We continue to work on a more permanent solution that does not require any tech savvy or extra file downloads, but we put up this workaround to give everyone the ability to get back in the game as soon as possible, so I hope you can make it work.
Thank you to our wonderful community for helping us narrow down the issue and for helping each other get back in the game!
Okay, so I deleted the old game and spent most of the day on a fresh re-install. No SweetFX or other addons. And it worked!
Before, the game just closed down after selecting a server. Running Win 10 Home, 64-bit, Firefox browser.
Thank you! Workaround is working for me.
For anyone that was trying some of the suggestions in this thread yesterday, if you switched your directx version, you might want to switch it back (use the instructions in the dev post in this thread, or simply reset your graphics settings in the launcher). I forgot about that and the game didn't load at first.
Can anyone from SSG contact me as I have multiple PCs and can be of use.
Actually, the crypto program only managed to propagate via Win7 machines and above (but mostly poorly protected Win7 machines), on XP it crashed the computers, but no files were damaged. The NHS problem was the servers were infected, crashing the network, so nothing could connect.
I have used an XP based netbook to do my banking from some very dodgy places since XP went EOL; and not had a single infection of any type; it comes down to how long the AV and Firewall people maintain support, because patching a Windows OS is like trying to put a sticky plaster on a nuclear bomb in mid explosion, they are so badly written, they will NEVER be secure.
Despite all the hoopla about XP being ancient, the coding under Win7 is very similar, I used to have programs written for Win3.1 that worked perfectly on XP; and would probably work on Win7 if I still had them. It comes down to how well written they are.
Thank you, SSG, for the workaround! :D

Easiest way to find where your LOTRO folder is by doing this
1) Locate your LOTRO game Icon on your Desktop
2) Right Click it and Select Properties
3) Open File Location
It will be one of 3
C:\Program Files (x86)\Turbine\The Lord of the Rings Online
C:\Program Files (x86)\StandingStoneGames\The Lord of the Rings Online
C:\ProgramData\Turbine\The Lord of the Rings Online
The 3rd one is normally a Hidden Directory , so will be why most can not navigate to it.
If you do as above, it will allow you to get there.
The fix works fine for me ( vista 64 )
Don't take this as negative critique but You're forgetting that many here are from Europe and if running on old machines can still have it in the Codemaster directory as well. :)
- C:\Program Files (x86)\Codemasters\The Lord of the Rings Online
or if on a 32-bit You would probanly not even have the (x86) and it would be
- C:\Program Files\Codemasters\The Lord of the Rings Online
or simply
- C:\Program\Codemasters\The Lord of the Rings Online
depending on language version of Windows of course. Of course it could be located on a partition other than C:\ as well. Really hard to be 100% sure with everyones personal set-ups.
Aside from that it's geat to see all the help You have been offering. *thumbs up*
Yeah but the Common places now are those for a while, but saying that, doing what I posted will take you wherever your Game is located regardless of how long you have been running from that Location.
I use to have Codemasters but I like to keep things upto date and with a fresh install.
Also , Steam keeps things in a different place so not sure how SSG are dealing with those player.
For Windows 7 Users having problems.
I have read that even some with win7 64-bit are having issues. Some can log into the game but not open the store or it's just a black window, some can not log in. Most have been as they had SweetFX installed but there are some that say they do not have SweetFX or any other 3rd part programs and still have problems.
For that reason i did a little experiment on the win7 64-bit machine that my son plays on and I did test the XP and Vista fix/workaround on that machine and the fix does work on that one too. So that is always an option even for win7 users if You can't get it to work using the normal launcher after the update. I don't recommend it, just saying that it might be an option. Do not blame me if Your PC blows up or NSA comes knocking on Your door afterwards, he he he !!! :p
However I would still, if I were You, try to figure out why it is not working on Your win7 as it could be some old browser version or something, as it should work just fine on win7 64-bit both with an up-to-date Google Chrome as well as an up-to-date 64-bit FireFox Browser. Might be that You need to update win7 via Windows update or switch Your main browser to using either FireFox or Google Chrome in case Internet Explorer is set as deafult main browser. Possibly that You run win7 32 bit ???
In any case the XP and Vista workaround is always a last option as well as it seems to work on win7 64-bit and probably on win7 32-bit then as well. Although the choice is Yours of course as it's Your PC and You take the risk at whatever You chose to do, tweak or install. :)
Edit: Only problem I had implementing the XP/Vista fix on the win7 64-bit was with the Anti-virus as that machine runs another anti-virus than the one I'm usually familiar with. It runs AVG and it would not want to let the lotroclient_awesomium.exe run/execute but block it. Not being too familiar with AVG it took me some time to find where and how to manually allow a file, as I had to allow an the entire directory/folder, then the Windows Firewall also came with a pop-up warning that I had to accept. Once I had fixed all that, LoTRO starts just fine on win7 64-bit using the XP/Vista fix as well.
---> HOWEVER again LoTRO should run fine on win7 64-bit without having to use that fix, so it is prefferable to find what is causing the problem and fix that, rather than to use the fix.
I will revert that machine back to using the normal launcher again, as that machine had no problems after yesterdays update. This was just a little test i did in case someone badly needs that option.
the fix worked for me I am in game right now and store opened in external browser. I am very happy to have been proven wrongthis time. A big THANK YOU to everyone who had a hand in it
I have you at somewhat of a disadvantage and only because I build my own PC's and that's all I have ever done. I would highly recommend it to anybody that knows their way around wrenches or handy-man repair. It really is that simple. Building a PC from scratch is simpler than doing an oil change :D
But store bought PC's are something I know nothing about and I would just say shop around. Maybe focus on PC's that are packaged for video streaming/creation/production. Then it's just a matter of what your budget allows :)
If you know how to use a screwdriver, you can build a PC. Hell, the hard work is done by inserting the right disks in the right order after you put the screwdriver back in the tool box :D
The work around fix does not work for me . I can't even download the first file. All it does is bring up a text of the file .
And I will be seeing if it offers a solution to my LotRO installation on Linux when I get home from work sometime tomorrow morning. But this has been a wake up call for me and has made me feel very insecure about my future time and money investment in LotRO. :(
I just started back into LotRO around six months ago after having played it on another account several years back. I admit I have thrown a huge amount of time and quite a bit of money in LotRO during this period of time...I won't say I regret any of that but I must question whether continuing to do so as a Linux user is something I should do.
Using a non-open source/non-Linux OS isn't an option I will entertain, that's my bed and I am happy sleeping in it. I just have to take responsibility for my choices and put my money and time into game companies that at least acknowledge Linux users as part of their player-base when they make compatibility shaking decisions. LotRO has a good reputation on that count, but the writing is definitely on the wall. There will never be a Linux client, I know this -being on the fringe is a dangerous place and there's a lot of moving parts outside of the actual client which makes this wonderful game work for me. (Wine, Winetricks, PlayOnLinux, GPU Drivers, etc) So, any door SSG closes in the future for completely understandable reasons -will have an impact most likely.
This post isn't a boo-hoo post or a blame SSG type of screed; it's more me coming to terms with no longer feeling as comfortable playing LotRO going forward. It's like being in love with someone who doesn't make any promises or commitment. :/

Have You tried copying the link directly into Your browser adress bar as suggested by Tybur (ssg staff member) ??? Of course copy the links WITHOUT the " infront and " at the end of the links. I don't intend to patronize You or anything just that it's easy to get those included when copying the links from the post and not think about that. :)
Oh and dont forget to follow the other instructions (in the official fix post) if the downloads now work before You moveing the downloaded files file into the game directory. Be sure to backup Your TurbineLauncher.exe.config (xml file) before replacing that.
Choosing the components for a PC is a damn sight more involved than choosing the right oil and filter for your car. First you have to understand what the basic components are. Then, you have to compare the competing technologies available for each component. Then, when presented with a multitude of options at different price points, you have to somehow make an educated decision about the tradeoffs (e.g. between cost and performance).
It's hard to imagine how anyone could believe that building your own PC is as easy as changing the oil in your car. I mean, have you changed the oil in your car? There's a reason that job pays peanuts.
Game's working again after having downloaded all the files (including the zip files, wouldn't work with just the first two) into my Lord of the Rings folder. Huzzah!!
Thank you, SSG!!
Following the instructions from SSG today, and with some background research here on the forums before I tried to implement the workaround, am very glad to say it was fast, easy, and worked 1st try for me...running Windows XP 32 bit on a 10 yr old machine. A huge kudos to the folks at SSG for a very speedy and easily obtainable workaround for those of us with outdated OS's and hardware and despite my angry/frustrated post of last night, this shows a level of dedication to keeping ALL players in game which I find admirable. And yeah, a new puter and OS are definitely on my wish list and rapidly moving into the high priority category...maybe by this fall I'll have the savings account built up enough to accomplish that. Again, all folks at SSG, thanks for the rapid response, my hat is off to you.
So nothing for Win10 (64 bit) Users yet? :(
Win XP 32
dl the 2 files copy/paste and back in the game :)
Thank you SSG.
I believe the only known issues for win7 through win10 is if you either have previously installed sweetfx ( in which case remove all sweetfx related files or reinstall ) or you have set compatibility mode on one of the Lotro .exe files to winXP or Vista emulation, ( in which you need to remove this or reinstall ).
Linux user here. Downloaded the two files and copied them to install directory as instructed. Works fine for me. I'm back in and happily playing. Thanks to SSG and forum testers for getting this workaround out so quickly.
If you are a Linux user that was using pylotro to launch the game, I have patched it to work with the SSG workaround.
It is available here: https://github.com/nwestfal/pylotro
I finally got to play last night. I logged on with no issues. I have a Windows 10 Asus rig. Not sure the exact specs. I'm at work right now. *sigh*
Other than the store taking a while to load up, everything seemed fine in Starkmore in Dunland.
Thought I had escaped this issue on Win 10 64bit system. Had my daughter download update while I was at work Wednesday. Once update was complete, even had her log into game. Everything worked fine so had her exit game and shut down computer. When I got home, went to fire up game and got the damned Error 5. Tried a few things but ended up uninstalling game. Went in and manually deleted remaining Turbine folder. Did make sure and backup my pref file and keymapping. From there, downloaded and reinstalled game and all works fine.
ETA: Only thing extra or third party I had was Combat Analysis plug-in. So no SweetFX or anything like that to cause issue.
I used steam unistall, so I am not sure if the game folder was empty (but I dont have any d3d9.dll,d3d9.fx,dxgi.dll,dxgi .fx,injector.ini,log.log,shade r.fx,SweetFX readme.txt,SweetFX_preset.txt, SweetFX_settings.txt in the folder). I also reseted game display settings.
48 hours without being able to enter. With Turbine, this had never happened. I tried the fix without success.
Hi all, i was trying to get back in the game with the current instructions ( https://www.lotro.com/forums/showthr...46#post7728146 )
So i am using steam and i found out that i have to copy the files into "C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\L ord of the Rings Online" ,
after that i am able to log in in the server i am in (evernight) BUT after that i have a new problem " error 104" something about directx 9 and the game crashes to desctop when i click any button. I hope this will help
( i am trying to solve the new problem now)
the announced fix (put out yesterday at 5pm) did make the game playable again ... yaaaaah!!! .....
I would suggest they make their (programmers) software check compatibility more in future and have a workable option (and test for such endcases are handled)
It's odd that they don't simply roll back the last update while they find a permanent solution.
what a complete and utter fiasco. The best thing SSG should be doing is issuing some solid advice for players to not to do anything with their clients until a patch is ready and rolled out via the normal update process. Getting players to waste their time with delete/reinstall on flimsy evidence and, even worse asking players to manually add files to the steam-based client is just shambolic.
This is reminiscent of 2 bit IT companies who roll out updates whilst in full on panic mode. Better to just advise customers to leave their game installs well alone whilst a proper fix is put together, tested on all platforms and then rolled out via the launcher.
Think that would be a lot more work than it's worth, not sure its even possible for them to roll it back? All depends on how their client updates the game etc which im guessing with how old it is that it may not be possible?
Not sure where you think SSG told them to uninstall the game?
Hi Ydn, I assume you left clicked on the link to download? Browsers by default tend to display text files rather than save them to disk. To force your browser to download the file, right click on the link instead. You should see a popup menu. In my browser (Firefox), it has an option to "Save link as...". You should see a similar option, depending on your browser. Once you have selected this option using a left click of your mouse, the browser will prompt you with a "Save As" dialog box, where you can choose the location of where to download it to your computer. Write down this location. Then, go find it with Windows Explorer. Odds are, the default location it will land you in is the Downloads folder. But, of course, you can choose a location where you feel it is easier to find. From there, you can move the file to your LOTRO folder.
I hope that helps.
I am widows 10 64 bit system, get to server choice than bam....starts asking if video something or other, what did they break this time!!!!
The word rollback is simple and sounds easy. It isn't easy.
SSG would have to build an update that put the old files back in place and prepare to rollback all database changes to the point of shutdown for the problem patch. That could take a couple of days. Meanwhile a lot of people are successfully playing and improving their characters. Suddenly, Boom! People who did not have any problem with the patch lose all their work for 1-3 days.
Hell hath no fury like a player who finally won the roll for the Unwelcome Mat only to lose it in a rollback.
I have been in this position with commercial software. You can roll it back and you will lose 2 million dollars worth of work, or you can keep running with the problematic update until we patch it (or you get your act together an upgrade the last of your users from unsupported browser) and only lose $50,000 worth of work per day for a few days.
Download DirectX 9.0c Full June 2010 (I believe) See if that helps.
Yeah, the fix resolved the problem for me, no issues. Also, my FPS seems to have improved across the board -this may be due to the reinstallation, not sure.
UserPrefs set for GraphicsCore=D3D9 (with csmt enabled in the registry setting, I get really great performance with CSMT, and now more so since the new installation, patch and fix)
Manjaro Linux/Wine 2.9 CSMT /w virtual drive Windows 10/64 bit
So, I renewed my subscription, paid up until November.
PROBLEM SOLVED
Windows 10, 64-bit, steam version
I reinstall the game, deleted everything including documents files, reinstall steam, used cclener, reinstall graphics card drivers...and boom, I am back in Middle-earth :). Thank you all, who are helping here :)
Firstly, nice of you to condescend to those who still have older machines. Way to show your butt! Secondly, you know little of which you speak. Shaming "11 year old operating systems" when the game itself is that old, makes you look foolish. It's likely that the original game box had XP listed as a valid OS. Here's a few other things:
-You cant get a "basic" (whatever that is) copy of windows 7 for $20 unless via nefarious sources. Full versions are still far more expensive. OEM and upgrades are also still more expensive than $20, (and not all machines qualify to be 'upgraded.')
-Oh also, you cant just slap a newer operating system on any old machine without running the risk of old hardware in-compatibility/supportability by the new OS, especially when you skip a couple OS generations. Anyone recall the "free OS10 upgrade" debacle of 2016??
I have a w10, 2w7, and 2wXP machines. I build computers, and I know what I'm talking about.
Windows 8.1 64-bit Tried downloading update today. Launcher closed after a bit then reopened, It says Installing Pre -Reqs but nothing I happening! The little window in the launcher that shows the latest news is black! I saw the news when it was 1st downloading but nothing now and launcher is frozen doing nothing.
Finally fixed this by closing client launcher and restarting. I'm in game. Breathes a sigh of relief.
Hear! Hear! I'm with ya 100% sister or brother !!! :)
In fact retailers are not even supposed to be allowed by Microsoft to sell win7 anymore from what I read and could possibly lose their license to be a Microsoft retailer. Even selling pre built PC's with win7 in is not allowed by Microsoft anymore. That deadline has already ran out. That is why I got my official physical copy of win7 install disk with mox and all before that for my build I knew I was going to do eventually. So YES, You are indeed left to key selling sites or shady retailers. If You do not want to risk giving out Your details to them or CC information and risk being scammed or even worse ID theft, well then You are screwed getting anything but win10. Acctually even win8 are not supposed to be sold anymore. Microsoft is doing everything they can to force win10 down everyones throats.
