Don't take this as negative critique but You're forgetting that many here are from Europe and if running on old machines can still have it in the Codemaster directory as well.

    • C:\Program Files (x86)\Codemasters\The Lord of the Rings Online

or if on a 32-bit You would probanly not even have the (x86) and it would be

    • C:\Program Files\Codemasters\The Lord of the Rings Online

    or simply

    • C:\Program\Codemasters\The Lord of the Rings Online

depending on language version of Windows of course. Of course it could be located on a partition other than C:\ as well. Really hard to be 100% sure with everyones personal set-ups.

Aside from that it's geat to see all the help You have been offering. *thumbs up*

Yeah but the Common places now are those for a while, but saying that, doing what I posted will take you wherever your Game is located regardless of how long you have been running from that Location.

I use to have Codemasters but I like to keep things upto date and with a fresh install.

Also , Steam keeps things in a different place so not sure how SSG are dealing with those player.

Exclamation XP And Vista Fix Seems To Work On Win7 as well

For Windows 7 Users having problems.

I have read that even some with win7 64-bit are having issues. Some can log into the game but not open the store or it's just a black window, some can not log in. Most have been as they had SweetFX installed but there are some that say they do not have SweetFX or any other 3rd part programs and still have problems.

For that reason i did a little experiment on the win7 64-bit machine that my son plays on and I did test the XP and Vista fix/workaround on that machine and the fix does work on that one too. So that is always an option even for win7 users if You can't get it to work using the normal launcher after the update. I don't recommend it, just saying that it might be an option. Do not blame me if Your PC blows up or NSA comes knocking on Your door afterwards, he he he !!!

However I would still, if I were You, try to figure out why it is not working on Your win7 as it could be some old browser version or something, as it should work just fine on win7 64-bit both with an up-to-date Google Chrome as well as an up-to-date 64-bit FireFox Browser. Might be that You need to update win7 via Windows update or switch Your main browser to using either FireFox or Google Chrome in case Internet Explorer is set as deafult main browser. Possibly that You run win7 32 bit ???

In any case the XP and Vista workaround is always a last option as well as it seems to work on win7 64-bit and probably on win7 32-bit then as well. Although the choice is Yours of course as it's Your PC and You take the risk at whatever You chose to do, tweak or install.

Edit: Only problem I had implementing the XP/Vista fix on the win7 64-bit was with the Anti-virus as that machine runs another anti-virus than the one I'm usually familiar with. It runs AVG and it would not want to let the lotroclient_awesomium.exe run/execute but block it. Not being too familiar with AVG it took me some time to find where and how to manually allow a file, as I had to allow an the entire directory/folder, then the Windows Firewall also came with a pop-up warning that I had to accept. Once I had fixed all that, LoTRO starts just fine on win7 64-bit using the XP/Vista fix as well.

---> HOWEVER again LoTRO should run fine on win7 64-bit without having to use that fix, so it is prefferable to find what is causing the problem and fix that, rather than to use the fix.

I will revert that machine back to using the normal launcher again, as that machine had no problems after yesterdays update. This was just a little test i did in case someone badly needs that option.

I have you at somewhat of a disadvantage and only because I build my own PC's and that's all I have ever done. I would highly recommend it to anybody that knows their way around wrenches or handy-man repair. It really is that simple. Building a PC from scratch is simpler than doing an oil change

But store bought PC's are something I know nothing about and I would just say shop around. Maybe focus on PC's that are packaged for video streaming/creation/production. Then it's just a matter of what your budget allows

If you know how to use a screwdriver, you can build a PC. Hell, the hard work is done by inserting the right disks in the right order after you put the screwdriver back in the tool box

I am very happy a workaround fix has been made available...

And I will be seeing if it offers a solution to my LotRO installation on Linux when I get home from work sometime tomorrow morning. But this has been a wake up call for me and has made me feel very insecure about my future time and money investment in LotRO.

I just started back into LotRO around six months ago after having played it on another account several years back. I admit I have thrown a huge amount of time and quite a bit of money in LotRO during this period of time...I won't say I regret any of that but I must question whether continuing to do so as a Linux user is something I should do.

Using a non-open source/non-Linux OS isn't an option I will entertain, that's my bed and I am happy sleeping in it. I just have to take responsibility for my choices and put my money and time into game companies that at least acknowledge Linux users as part of their player-base when they make compatibility shaking decisions. LotRO has a good reputation on that count, but the writing is definitely on the wall. There will never be a Linux client, I know this -being on the fringe is a dangerous place and there's a lot of moving parts outside of the actual client which makes this wonderful game work for me. (Wine, Winetricks, PlayOnLinux, GPU Drivers, etc) So, any door SSG closes in the future for completely understandable reasons -will have an impact most likely.

This post isn't a boo-hoo post or a blame SSG type of screed; it's more me coming to terms with no longer feeling as comfortable playing LotRO going forward. It's like being in love with someone who doesn't make any promises or commitment. :/

Have You tried copying the link directly into Your browser adress bar as suggested by Tybur (ssg staff member) ??? Of course copy the links WITHOUT the " infront and " at the end of the links. I don't intend to patronize You or anything just that it's easy to get those included when copying the links from the post and not think about that.

The files should download into your Downloads folder automatically or pop up a dialog asking you where to put the file. This worked for me in IE, Firefox, and Chrome.

To find your installation directory, try right clicking your "The Lord of the Rings Online" shortcut and select "properties". In the window that opens, you should see a "Target" and a "Start in" location, both of which should point to your installation folder.

We continue to work on a more permanent solution that does not require any tech savvy or extra file downloads, but we put up this workaround to give everyone the ability to get back in the game as soon as possible, so I hope you can make it work.

Thank you to our wonderful community for helping us narrow down the issue and for helping each other get back in the game!
Oh and dont forget to follow the other instructions (in the official fix post) if the downloads now work before You moveing the downloaded files file into the game directory. Be sure to backup Your TurbineLauncher.exe.config (xml file) before replacing that.

Choosing the components for a PC is a damn sight more involved than choosing the right oil and filter for your car. First you have to understand what the basic components are. Then, you have to compare the competing technologies available for each component. Then, when presented with a multitude of options at different price points, you have to somehow make an educated decision about the tradeoffs (e.g. between cost and performance).

It's hard to imagine how anyone could believe that building your own PC is as easy as changing the oil in your car. I mean, have you changed the oil in your car? There's a reason that job pays peanuts.

Game's working again after having downloaded all the files (including the zip files, wouldn't work with just the first two) into my Lord of the Rings folder. Huzzah!!

I have no trouble logging in on my 8.1 laptop, but I've decided to wait for the more permanent solution for my Vista SP2 64 bit desktop.

    Workaround works fine for me

Following the instructions from SSG today, and with some background research here on the forums before I tried to implement the workaround, am very glad to say it was fast, easy, and worked 1st try for me...running Windows XP 32 bit on a 10 yr old machine. A huge kudos to the folks at SSG for a very speedy and easily obtainable workaround for those of us with outdated OS's and hardware and despite my angry/frustrated post of last night, this shows a level of dedication to keeping ALL players in game which I find admirable. And yeah, a new puter and OS are definitely on my wish list and rapidly moving into the high priority category...maybe by this fall I'll have the savings account built up enough to accomplish that. Again, all folks at SSG, thanks for the rapid response, my hat is off to you.

I believe the only known issues for win7 through win10 is if you either have previously installed sweetfx ( in which case remove all sweetfx related files or reinstall ) or you have set compatibility mode on one of the Lotro .exe files to winXP or Vista emulation, ( in which you need to remove this or reinstall ).

Linux user here. Downloaded the two files and copied them to install directory as instructed. Works fine for me. I'm back in and happily playing. Thanks to SSG and forum testers for getting this workaround out so quickly.

If you are a Linux user that was using pylotro to launch the game, I have patched it to work with the SSG workaround.

    It is available here: https://github.com/nwestfal/pylotro

I never even knew about SweetFX and I have not set the compatibility Mode in those files... So I have to re-install it?

I finally got to play last night. I logged on with no issues. I have a Windows 10 Asus rig. Not sure the exact specs. I'm at work right now. *sigh*

Other than the store taking a while to load up, everything seemed fine in Starkmore in Dunland.

When you uninstalled the game, did you make sure that the game folder was empty? If you reinstalled over a previous install then any sweetfx files, etc will most likely still be in the game folder.
