Client Crashes Upon Log-in After Todays Update

I could play fine this morning European time. Logged off a few hours before update. Then just 20 min ago I tried to log-in.

1. I updated fine.

2. Typed in Acct name and Password and click Log In just fine.

3. Get to the serverlist just fine.

4. Chose my server and click play.

5. *bam* lotroclient has stopped working. That's in the usual error pop-up window and it starts searching for a solution online etc. No solution can be found and then asks if i want to send information to Microsoft in the usual Microsft windows pop-up which i don't want of course.

What did You break in this update ??? I run 32-bit windows. Same PC I have been able to play LoTRO on since 2007. My son is trying to update his client now to on his 64-bit win 7 to see if it works opn his PC.

Anyone else having this issue ???

I'm on Vista too, 32-bit. Obviously they did not test it on Vista then before release. Great that means I can not play anymore together with my son unless I get a new PC. These are the 2 PC's we have atm and this one have been working fine until todays update. *sigh*

My sons update on the PC he uses is not done yet, so no idea if hat works on Win 7 64-bit yet.

Not having that issue, but I can do everything the previous poster described and the game just doesn't start. Nothing happens I just go right to desktop as though the game were never started.

Same problem here, also with Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bits GeForce GT730. After loging and click enter to play, client crash. Officially now is the Lord of Crashes Online, not need to crash after 1 minute of game, mapping or walking around Bree or Minas Tirith.

Update: My son can get in fine on his Win 7 64-bit so obviously it's an issue after this update with running Vista and/or 32-bit O/S. That's just great...NOT...

Yes, I know Vista is no longer officially supported by Microsoft since March but this game is from 2007 and has run fine on this until today.

Sounds like the same problem to me. I can login, choose a server and immediately after clicking "Play" the game crashes and windows tries to search for a solution to the problem... So the launcher never launches the game.

Windows 10 Creator's update x64 here, and I logged in just fine. Vista has, if I am not mistaken, has been deprecated and off official support for some time now. The client is a largeaddressaware program that identifies itself to Windows 10 as a Windows 7 program. Other than being on a 32 bit OS, I'm not sure why it is crashing.

I'm not on Vista, but I'm having the same issue. The game simply will not run after signing in and choosing my server.

SSG can you please say if it stays that way or will you repair it for us 32bit old OS Folks.

oh and yes i love it when a company does these things ofc you dont say it before bc maybe some folks would stop to give money for this game.

and please no talk about get an other OS thats not the point here.

So it's not only Vista then but also XP, Win 7 and in some cases even Win 10. Not just 32-bit either but even 64-bit win 7 and win 10 for some. Even on identical set-up machines it runs on one and crashes on the other. Awesome...NOT...

A few things:

1) You're using Windows Vista in 2017? It is officially the worst operating system in existence and isn't even supported by Microsoft anymore.

3) You don't need a new PC, you need to update your Operating System, which is not difficult and honestly not even that costly. Win7, 8 and 10 are probably much more efficient than Vista anyway, so it may even improve your PC performance.

Edit: Can buy a basic copy of Windows 7 for £14, that's $20 ish.
Edit 2: Windows 8.1 Professional, £18.99...

The problem with updating to a new OS is that the new OS requires hardware that these older PCs don't have. Windows 10 wants twice as much RAM as my computer can hold, for instance. So it isn't as simple as just a new OS for everyone.

There always have to be at least one in every thread. *sigh* Did You read any other reply ??? I only submitted those specs to make it easier to identify if that acctually was the issue or not. If You do read You will see that others have same or similar issue on anything from XP and win 7 to win 10 and even 64-bit, not just 32-bit and not just Vista.

I'm having same issue on windows 10 64 bit. Started right after update. No error, log in screen goes away like normal but game doesn't start.

I am having the same issue. Was playing earlier today. Updated game. Now I can log in, I can choose a server, then the client simply disappears.

Playing on XP. And yes my drivers are up to date. Something got broken during the update, let's not blame the players for this.

Same issue as everyone else. Win 10 32 bit. Ran fine yesterday, even this morning b4 update.

Updated on my other PC. Win 7 32 bit, runs fine.

We are currently investigating reports from those of you running a 32-bit operating system and seeing errors that the lotroclient has stopped working. I don't know if we will have a solution, but we are looking into it.
UPDATE: We have a temporary work around to allow you to continue playing the game on Windows XP and Windows Vista. We continue to investigate a more permanent solution.

Just tried the suggestion and it didn't work. Game disappeared again.

I don't think players are being blamed. Some comments were a consequence of the stated OS versions. This is, though, not universal. It may be 32 bit related, even on 64 bit versions, due to other factors. There isn't enough information, right now, to say much. Note that two computers with stated specifications may yet not be exactly the same, and thus, one crashes and the other doesn't. That makes it tougher to pin down.

That said, when I've had crashing problems, nearly all were local to my machine and from flaky or dying hardware or drivers or both.

Takes less than 30 seconds to try this. Part of the update seemed to involve tweaking the way this file works; it's not unreasonable to narrow the problem down.

That said, I tried that before it was suggested to no avail.

Windows 10 x64/creator update. Launcher closes, game fails to load itself.

Edit: Fixed my problem by removing old SweetFX files and using new version of ReShade.

Tried Suggestion but still does not open game

I did what you suggested and changed the name to preference file. I logged in and had to go through the rules and agreements. I also had to choose a world. I was hoping that this would work but once I chose the world the game did not launch, so I guess we need another work around or what?

Tried it and as You said it did not work for me as I did have the notification that lotroclient stopped working. At least I tried anyway just to test something.

Tried this, no joy. Game disappears like it's going to start, but nothing but desktop. Nothing LOTRO running in Task Manager. I get no message about client stopping. It just pops to desktop.

Hmmm, a 32-bit game client not working in a 32-bit enviroment O/S that sounds weird now that I think about. Especially sice it's worked for all these years. :)

Anyways, it seems some have the issue even running 64-bit win 7 and win 10, so not sure it's even a 32-bit O/S problem.

same here choose a server and click play nothing happens . I logged in this morning before the maintenance with no problems.

The solution for SSG is simple repeal the update there is obviously an error in it .

Tried the solution presented. No joy.

The particular problem I am describing reminds me of fresh installations of the game and not having the proper Redistributable/DirectX .cab drivers installed.

As far as I can tell, that's all fine on my end. Even reinstalled the DirectX .CAB files to no avail.

Sounds more to me like a corrupted file or files during download. But seriously after reading the replies here, a lot of people are using outdated potatoes for computers.

I'm getting the "Lotro client has stopped working" message, as soon as I select a server to log into. I've tried 2 different servers, Landy and Arkenstone, with the same results.

I hope this can be resolved today, its raid night. :-)

When/if lotro moves to 64 bit client you need to upgrade your OS anyway.

I'm getting the "Lotro client has stopped working" message, as soon as I select a server to log into as well...

Same for my wife and son..

Worked fine all these years, up to 2 minutes before it went down ://

NOT going to upgrade to another OS on any of our PC's just because they broke something lol.

That is not the issue here as people with 64-bit even have this problem even people with win 10 if You read through all the replies.

Also that is a big IF and a big WHEN about LoTRO ever getting a 64-bit client. Lets face that IF and WHEN it happens and that is not today. :)

planning to do so,to be able to play shadows of war (kinda missed shadow of mordor and its dlcs as i was busy by lotro)

i didnt had any mesage at all so i was waiting and waiting till the game starts as in my case even when working normally it dissappears yet becfore i countr to 5 if starts running,you know black screen ssg logo etc.

And yes, members here are effectively blaming players for the problem by belittling the hardware or OSes or whatever of other players. This is uncalled-for and illogical, as the game played quite perfectly up until the update 4 hours ago and now does not even start. *shrug*

Exactly as you say,the serverlist dissappears as it always does when its about to start,yet nothing.i was thinking i screwed the disc clean up somehow yet now i see its global.had i screwed all the discs worldwide?

I tried the renaming userpreferences.ini trick -> doesn't do the trick, still no lotro for me. In the meantime my wife is having fun playing lotro.

I agree 100% but You know there always have to be at least one or two (or more) of those in every thread. They don't even care to read that even win 10 users with 64-bit are affected or that partners with same setups and O/S, win 7 64-bit, have issue on one machine but not the other. Instead it's easier to come in and crack some wise remarks about potatoes and blame the players. Not even considering that all can not afford new PC's or even get a newer O/S to run on their machines. Also some of us will never ever run win 10. I simply refuse it. Yes win 7 I could upgrade too but support for that also runs out in 2020 and then it's Linux for me unless Microsoft changes their whole data/telemetry collection policy. I'm currently learning Linux Mint. However that is a totally other topic.

Also the bottom line is that this game worked fine on those machines until todays update. Many chose to play this game as it does run on the machines they can afford. Some of my friends have stayed in LoTRO simply as their PC's can not handle games like GW2 etc. Now they might not be able to even play this game anymore unless SSG find a solution. I'm sure SSG don't want that. They don't want to lose players, so I'm sure they are doing all they can to find this bug and fix what was broken.

Oh that makes me wonder if it worlks on Linux after todays patch as I think I read that some run LoTRo on Linux Mint ??? That would be interesting to know if it broke on Linux too ???

This is what worked for me. I am running windows 10 64 bit. Game wouldn't start with no error messages. I removed a directx file named d3d9.dll from the game directory. When I restarted the game it asked if I wanted to use directx 11 for the game. I said yes and the game started as normal. I'm not advising people to do this, just making known what worked for me.

I'm sure SSG don't want that. They don't want to lose players, so I'm sure they are doing all they can to find this bug and fix what was broken.

Oh that makes me wonder if it worlks on Linux after todays patch as I think I read that some run LoTRo on Linux Mint ??? That would be interesting to know if it broke on Linux too ???

well,i have this XP poc since win 7s been released and i didnt like that OS on sis´ notebook when she didnt knew what and where and i couldnt helped her,so staying atm with my xp yet soon planning to buy a new win 10
pc so can play shadow of war (was too busy with lotro during shadow of mordor happening).

If you encountering Login issues and crashing do this

Goto My Docs Folder
Find LOTRO and rename it Old LOTRO
Try launching game now

If it launches ok, check everything, play for a few mins.
Exit
Rename the new LOTRO to New LOTRO and rename the Old LOTRO back.

Try it

Also remove everything in the Cache folder.

Hmmm, that's interesting. I use to run DX11 but the crash to desktop issue was terrible, especially in MT but it was not limited to MT with DX11. It could (and frequently did) happen everywhere. So I swapped back to DX9 and now crashes are mostly limited to MT when they do occur.

I hope I don't have to run DX11 and tolerate crashes on an hourly basis.

Win10 x64, creator update, launcher exit without booting game.

Fixed by removing old SweetFX files and using newer ReShade version.

That's interesting as well because that .dll referenced a few posts ago has to be in the folder for SweetFx to work properly.

Where do you get the newer ReShade version?

tried the fixes suggested by Tybur and Gondorzilla still not working cleared cache also. Get it in gear SSG
This thread is not the place to tell people to update their OS for any reason since this problem spans from Win XP to Win 10 and 32 and 64 bit machines. If you have nothing helpful to offer besides "update your OS," keep your lips zipped.

I am currently using DX9 so its not the entire issue here.

I'm on Windows 7 Professional 64-bit and have been running as Administrator for a long time, but that doesn't work either after the update. Not getting an error message, just "poof." I'll try resetting the configuration, but isn't this something QA should have picked up? (Old QA hand here, so I'm not just guessing.)

Windows 7 Home Extended, 64-bit.
I had exactly the same issue after the update: the client would just disappear without any error messages after selecting the server to enter; no related processes in the task manager.

Fiddling with the preferences file hasn't helped.

Thanks to the fix suggested by Dave46, I also renamed the d3d9.dll from the game directory, and after that I was able to run the game as normal.

I've tried running as an admin, removing the userINI file, renaming the document-lotro file, and removing the d3d9.dll (which I don't have one so I couldn't test this), I've also tried using the reset graphics setting in the launcher, nothing has worked yet.

Does anyone know how to change the DX version without getting in game?

Yea, I've tried the various suggestions in this thread, but no luck. I do hope the fix is in soon. I don't want to get behind on the Scavenger Hunt that I'm doing on my two main characters.

After the change over, the game now resides in
C:\Program Files (x86)\StandingStoneGames\The Lord of the Rings Online

It's worth doing a Copy of the
C:\Program Files\Turbine\The Lord of the Rings Online

To the new location and try running the game client from it, if you get Firewall msg, do Private only not Public.

Works fine for me. Quick suggestion that I ALWAYS do after an update, defrag your game directory with IObit Smart Defrag. Solves a lot of problems to keep your game directory as unfragmented as possible.

How does this have anything to do with the fact that I played ALL DAY yesterday, as I have for months, with NO ISSUES; yet today there was a "patch" and NOW am getting the error message "Lotroclient has stopped working"

Something got messed up in their patch today - I am not deleting, renaming, juggling, jiggling anything until I hear from the powers that are what to do about THEIR MISTAKE.

I decided to do a complete reinstall. Which had nothing to do with the problem that cropped up today.

Anyway, I say that to say this:

I got the game started by getting rid of the d3d9.dll file.

So, apparently, whatever changes they made today rendered SweetFX obsolete, at least for me.

Going to ReShade now.

In order to come up with a fix or workaround, finding the "common denominators" is helpful to isolate the root cause (or causes).

No one is suggesting a fundamental change. Let's just put our heads together and figure out a workaround. SSG will find the full answer, but it may take some time to code the fix, test it, push it out to customers, etc. Until then, if there's a "quick fix" uncovered by looking at the evidence, what's the harm for those willing to participate?

These files and hardware specs are not sacred pieces of information, they're just tools. If you don't want to give it a go, no problem, but it's not helpful to stand in the corner making demands.

The problem seems to be with the d3d9.dll file. I removed it from my Turbine/LoTRO folder in Programs(X86) and the game started. I put it back and the game didn't start.

I didn't have problems logging in, but this thread tipped me off that SSG might have converted some more components of the game to 64 bits, so I thought I'd try the usual running-out-of-memory experiment.

Immediately after doing a milestone travel to The Wastes, the client froze up. (It didn't CTD as expected; it actually froze up.) And it was long before it consumed the amount of memory that normally crashes it. (I think the commit charge was a little over 3 GB when it froze up.)

I realize this post isn't very valuable diagnostically. The only relevant information is that there seems to be a new way to freeze the game up that doesn't involve running out of memory.

Windows 7, 64-bit, Intel CPU, NVIDIA card, DX11.
