ABC Songbook

Huzzah! After years of never using this terrible ABC system (you'd hate it too if it brought your first ever band final down to a C, curse you Mr. Friedman!), I have churned out what is truly a masterpiece bass solo. Except, it sounds best on clarinet, or so my brother tells me. He tested it on Roheryn:

I know, not a very long master piece hehe, this is only the first of several features all built around that theme. Going to have to try it out in the patch to really work out the kinks, but all in all I'm very proud of myself

I also made some stuff that I play on euphonium, but alas, long notes sound terrible on the horn ingame, so I will have to find some more lively dances and do away with all the uber cool chorals.

This sounds best on Lute.

This is the first variation similar to the performance by Mikail Visotsky (though only a tad slower than he played it). The 3rd variation is the only other variation playable in the LotRO ABC system. All others have to be played live (which I can do), but I'm keeping all the remaining variations for myself.

This has been moved up here to consolidate my ABC posts ITT.

Again, the strumming effect essentially throws away any concept of a reasonable time signature or measure.

Given the LotRO-based accidental markings, this probably will not play well outside of LotRO. So... try it in-game!

I hope you like it.

(BTW, I use "1st variation through 4th variation" instead of "theme through 3rd varation" to avoid confusion with some folks in this folk piece.)

The process I went through to do that little bit for Spinning Wheel was thus:
I listened to my CD... many times.
I learned to play it on a keybaord.
I learned to play it live in LotRO.
I learned to play it live with single notes only (which showed that the Lute was the only instrument that could play it well... which is a boon since that's also the an instrument available to everyone regardless of class).

Then... here comes the good part.

I broke it down into 2 strums per beat (6-notes for every strum regardless of the actual number of notes played), each strum right-aligned with the melody so that the tempo was dictated by the last note (or rest) on each line. It looked like this (and plays essentially the same way as the final result):

While the first variation never goes beyond 5 strings at a time, that 6th spot at the beginning of each line (intended for allowing a 6th string) ended up helping with the timing. (It's not an exact science, folks. Happy accidents come from experimentation.)

Then I simply took out all the rests (z) and added them to the previous note length and removed the line-breaks, which looks like this. (I discovered today that there's a 30-character limit for runs of unbroken text in posts where it will automatically insert a space. Apparently a "/" breaks the text, but a "," does not. Apologies to anyone who tried to use it before I changed that.)

The process above seems logical to me, but it is tedious. Why did I do this? Because I love music and I love sharing.

I'm trying to work out another song right now in ABC. It's a bit of a toughie as it doesn't lend itself well to strumming but needs chords.
