Ya know, I have read LOTR about 15 times....and I did not remember that the book has "cannot" instead of "shall not".

Don't be too embarrassed...I just spent about 2 hours coming up with a "killer" clue for Shadowfax.
While I was waiting for you to respond to my submission I went back through some of the previous posts to kill time and guess what I found....Shadowfax had already been done.

I have been guilty of this kind of duplication on several occasions.

Now I hafta come up with a new one.

By the way, even though "barrels out of bond" had been been done before, it still took me quite a while to come up with that answer the second time.

Obfuscation can take so many different paths it can continue to surprise us even when we duplicate. Just think of how many ways there are to say "GET OFF MY LAWN!"

Excellent. I love this thread. It is a very welcome variation on the other riddle threads - I have gotten to the point where my well is bone dry for one and two word riddles. That said, I don't have anything prepared for the next obfuscation riddle and will need a day or two.

Yes indeed this has me bamboozled as well. I think you helped boraxxe, or at least led me to made a guess.

I'm going to guess Gondolin, Turgon's hidden city.

I think it meets most of these. Tumladen, the location of Gondolin, which I believe used to be a lake, was shown to Turgon by Ulmo, who was the Lord of Waters (mists?). The location was arrived at by means of a dark tunnel that ran deep under the mountains. And of course, Turgon became king after founding and building the city of Gondolin.

Ecthelion of the Fountain?

That is indeed correct.

At one point in the Silmarillion, the text names the tunnel through the Encircling Mountains as the "Dry River" (initial caps in the original text). The text also states that there were seven gates. Ecthelion of the Fountain is the warden of the final gate. You cannot reach Turgon, the king, without passing Ecthelion.

Elenluin-Menelloth has the riddle mantle, but nice teamwork to all.
