    Hear Ye, Hear Ye!

There will be a Craft Faire on Sunday, March 3rd from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm inside the Bree South Gate on Landroval.

Crafters of all types and skills are invited to attend as sell their wares at this prime location with convenient access to superior crafting facilities, the auction house, a vault, and skirmish vendors.

Acrobats, wandering minstrels, and food and drink will be provided courtesy of the Lonely Mountain Merchants Guild to soften up prospective customers . . . ummm, that is, for everyone's enjoyment. All tips will go to the Lonely Mountain Merchant's Retirement Fund.

A mounted procession of patrons will precede the Faire, beginning in Thorin's Hall at noon and proceeding on to Michel Delving then Bree in time for the opening of the Faire at 12:30 pm.

Please note that due to the recent influx of refugees and other foreigners, you should keep an eye on your coin purse. Rewards will be offered for the subdual of thieves and con artists.

Although the official Faire will be over at 1:30 pm, all are encouraged to continue well beyond if they wish, particularly since we have secured a tax holiday for the entire day from the Mayor! (In the interests of full disclosure, it should be noted that, for reasons we are not at liberty to discuss, the Mayor is a beneficiary of the Lonely Mountain Merchant's Retirement Fund.)

Then there is this from the folks at the Windy Acres Ranch…

Join us on Saturday, March 9 at 8:00pm for the second annual Bywater Steeplechase, a horse race and mounted fashion contest. Meet at the Methel-stage.

Race on a long course with many jumps and obstacles, including water crossings. Compete for fame, gold, and 1,600 Turbine Points. To register, contact Kiralynn with your horse's name and breed before the event begins.

The horse show will be judged on the originality and color coordination of their outfits, how well it matches their mounts, and how dramatically it is presented. The audience will vote for the winners.

This is the last race of the 2012-2013 season before the Spring Racing Carnival begins!
And speaking of horse racing here are the leaders in the jockey standings for the season.

The following report concerning unrest among the membership of the Andune Ensemble was filed by Lonely Mountain Free Press reporter Cennwyn.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"The Andune Ensemble switched it up this past Sunday, taking their usual concert from in front of the Pony to the Scholar's Stairs! With a beautiful view of the surrounding Bree roof-line, plenty of love songs, and quite a lot of foot-traffic from lusty bucket-carrying maids, the concert was a great success! Beorbrand of BBB (in)famy was also present, and regaled the crowd with a rousing composition (the band may have made a few mistakes here and there, so hard were they laughing). Fortunately, no one noticed.

I also have here an anonyomous letter from, presumably, a member of the Ensemble--though which member, precisely, it is impossible to say, as the villain appears to have cut up an old issue of the Landroval Times and pasted together the lettering, presumably to disguise their handwriting.

"ThIS iS oUTraGEous! the band cAnNoT CONtinue to Be paiD in PIe NE loNgR! Do YOu NoW ho HArD it s to StRng a LuTe wtH PiE?!! wE DMND BTR PAY!!!!!"

I can only assume the increasingly appalling spelling is due to their having run out of letters. Possibly because they couldn't afford the necessary extra back issues of the Landroval Times. On account of being paid in nothing but PIES. We don't even get CAKES, you know. Not that it's any EASIER to string a lute with CAKE."

From the desk of Aldekim Etal

Several months ago Sparkleigh Larkspur, publisher of the Landroval Times, headed south to join in the fighting now spreading across Arda. To date she has not returned. Absent her dedicated leadership the Landroval Times suffered and with the recent retirement of Dori Bolger-Etal, Editor of the Mid-week Edition, the Times has been largely out of business. In order to help fill that void I have decided to begin publishing the Lonely Mountain Free Press.

It is my intention that the Lonely Mountain Free Press be an open publication, available to the many talented authors of Landroval. It is my hope that you, the citizens of Landroval, will feel free to post your writings here in this forum. You may just post here freely or, if you prefer, you may send your works to me for editing and inclusion in my weekly editions. Submissions from well recognized reputable sources will be published with little or no editing, but I reserve the right to not publish reports that are not from reputable sources or are questionable as to their accuracy. All times reported will be standard Bywater Time unless noted otherwise.

The Lonely Mountain Free Press does not accept responsibility or liability for material posted directly to the forums by other parties.

The date of the upcoming Bywater Steeplechase has been changed. Originally planned for March 9 the following information relates to the new scheduled date.

    The Second Annual Bywater Steeplechase
Date: Saturday, March 16 at 8:00 pm
    Place: Methel-stage in the Shire

This being the final race scheduled for the 2012-2013 racing season it is expected that winners of the annual jockey standings will be announced following the race.

This week the Andune Ensemble concert was performed near the Boar Fountain in Bree. Minus the regular leadership of Geoffroi, the band still put on its’ usual fine performance. Breaking new ground the group played one tune with all five performers on drums. A nice crowd was on hand including several members of Die Meisterbarden von Bree, and the crowd was treated to even more fine music when that band put on a concert immediately following the Andune Ensemble show. The music scene here in Landroval just keeps growing with more and more fine bands!

Sight seen: I couldn’t help noticing Finaor at the Andune show sans pointy hat. Can’t say I have ever seen him without his trademark hat before.

Sunday Bree was host to the first Lonely Mountain Band Open Craft Faire. Besides some few craft vendors, four or five minstrels and a juggler were on hand performing for the crowd. The event also included a group ride to the faire from Thorins’ Gate and a slow ride procession through Bree. Unfortunately a number of patrons enjoyed a few too many drinks and the event also saw a number of refugees from war torn regions of Arda wandering about begging for donations from faire patrons. The Faire organizers have scheduled talks with the Mayor of Frostbluff as to just how these beggars and unruly patrons might be handled at future events.

Being originally from Dale myself I was most pleased to discover Ales and Tales was being held this week at the Dale Nobility House established by Lady Melanie. As has been typical lately Byrcha lead Old Winyards and Sonca acted as Master of Mentoring. Less typical Latti acted as Mistress of Ceremonies while my dear friend Mornawen handled stage managing duties. The show got off to a fine start with Melanie and Friends playing a song for the usual large audience. (The friends being the lovely and talented trio of Kaleigh, Wendy and Madaelin) Unusual for a Melanie and Friends performance the ladies wore coordinated matching dresses varied only in color, and I also noticed that Finaor was back in his trademark hat for the evenings’ performance.

A large crowd was on hand this week for the Green Hill Music Society Concert (nearly reaching the size of an Ales & Tales gathering!). An extra treat was offered up for those who arrived early as a pre-GHMS warm up concert was being performed by Cellindis and Merlinor who stayed and joined the audience for the GHMS show. It was a remarkable evening in many respects as Lyonardo and Varilla returned to perform with the band after a considerable length of time away from the band. The concert began under the direction of Tiridyn, but a short time into the performance Falibrand appeared in the audience wearing his Bounder uniform. Undoubtedly professional obligations caused his absence. Eventually he joined in with the band both singing and playing during the later parts of the concert. Rumor has it Falibrand will be absent due to his professional obligations quite a bit in the near future. The staff of the Lonely Mountain Free Press wishes to express its’ hope that all goes well for Maestro Falibrand in these professional matters.

It never ceases to amaze me how little effort the Valar put into some of their ideas. The latest is “Fashion Week.” Tentatively scheduled for March 11th through the 18th, other than the fashion show attached to the Windy Acres Ranch Bywater Steeplechase I am not aware of any events going on for this “special event.” In fact, were it not for a notice rescheduling the date of the race, I would not have known this event was even in the proposal stage.

It’s been a slow news week, but with the Anniversary Celebration, Fashion Week, Spring Racing Festival, and Spring Festival all coming up that should change soon. ((not to mention adjusting to the considerable U10 changes))

Tonight, tonight: St. Patty's day is almost here so that means it's time for Bright Stars' first ever St. Patty Day Concert. Come dressed in green and enjoy a night of Irish Music, ale, stuffed cabbage and roasted potatoes at the park across from the jail in Bree Wed night at 9:30 PM.

A nice crowd gathered early for the Andune Ensemble Show this week. They were rewarded with pre-concert performances by both Kyrian and Aevireth. A bit smaller than usual, something I attribute to the recent time change, the crowd grew as the concert progressed. Also somewhat smaller than usual, the Andune Ensemble put on their usual fine show for the unusually well mannered audience. Next week Andune will be performing their special Bullroarer Took Day Concert in Michel Delving, Shire.

I stole this next report fair and square from the posting boards of the Lonely Mountain Band.
    ---------------------------------------------------
Ales & Tales on March 11, 2013 was a huge success! Hosted in the Park across the street from the Jail house by the Lonely Mountain Band's own Old Winyards with Galzagar as the Master of Ceremonies. The night started off with several random musicians playing miscellaneous tunes while he crowd gathered. The Old Winyards started off the official setlist with nearly 10 minutes with a mixture of fast up-beat and mellow songs. They were all decked out in their very best musician clothing, as everyone knows is always colorful and a joy to look at.

Melanie wove a tale of sadness called "Family Matters" which we will hear the conclusion of at next weeks A&T, followed by a couple of fancy tunes by our own Galzagar and Kyrian, playing a Lute Drum and a Lute Horn combo.

Nimrodelian Talespinner regaled us all with his epic story, "The Ranger and the Fountain." It had everyone on the edge of their.....grassy seats as the hero battled his way to victory.

Sonca then took the lead in the weekly Mucical Mentoring while Tomrica shared this week's announcements. We learned about the upcoming Landroval concerts: The Green Hills Music Hall Society on Tuesday night (where I currently am while writing this, along with about 30 others, Tuesdays at 10pm. Our own BBB (I believe it is Bards, Beers, and LongBeards) at midnight on Saturday near the Prancing Pony - arrive prepared to party hardy!! And last but certainly not least, the soothing tones of Andune, Sundays at 3 pm.

Also announced was the upcoming Market Day hosted by the Sons of Numenor at the Iron Gate on March 14th at 9:30pm, come prepared to barter and sell your wares! The 2nd Annual Bywater Steeplechase will be hosted by the Windy Acres Ranch with 62% mounts on Sunday, March 16, at 8pm in Michel Delving. There is also a new concert, the Bright Stars Saint Paddy's Day Concert in Green Park across from the jail on March 13, at 9:30 pm server time. Wear your best Green outfits and come ready to have fun!

Maddie & Friends followed the announcements with Madaelin, Melanie, and Kaleigh playing a delightful tune named "Souvenir."
Old Winyards took the center stage again, this time Sonca joined Tomrica, Aalloria, Mornawen, and Lhinnthel as they played a 20 minute dance suite including "Vingilot", "Great East Road", and an encore of the upbeat "Putting on the Ritz".

With over 50 in attendance dressed in brilliant blues, radiant reds, deep greens, gold and white dresses, and hats & cloaks of many variety - it was a concert that was filled with fun loving dancing, mirth, many fireworks displays, and good cheer all around.

Please join us for our weekly concerts in Bree, as we bring the community closer together through song and poetry, good cheer and beer!!

Aalloria Borealis, Princess Pirate of the Harpy
    --------------------------------------------------------
I would also like to note this addendum to the Ales & Tales report as provided by Molly Bayberry.
    -------------------------------------------------------
There was one more performer, in between the announcements and Maddie's trio: Moragaeth recited a poem called "The Three Sisters".
    ---------------------------------------------------------

The beat goes on, and keeps getting better. So is the case with the Green Hill Music Society. This week the audience at the GHMS show was larger than usual, nearly rivaling a typical Ales & Tales audience in size. In fact it was a landmark show in many respects. When first I arrived at the venue Green Hill Music Society Band Alumni Fincin was entertaining the early arrivals. It was definitely a night for some of the old and some of the new. Some of the old included the return to the stage of the legendary Vydor who has arranged many of the tunes performed each week, and took some time to play and sing with the band this week. Some of the new, everyone was thrilled when Gennyrose and Kaleigh combined their substantial talents to sing what may be the most unique duet ever performed here in Landroval, complete with staging and props. Bandleader Falibrand has long been a top performer when it comes to adding entertaining emotes to his songs, in the past Dovie was the first to use extensive vocals in her GHMS performances, now Gennyrose and Kaleigh have raised the bar another notch with their groundbreaking duet. Finally the band announced that next week they will present their special “Wearin O’ the Green” show.

From the desk of Aldekim Etal

As many of you already know, I am a member of the Lonely Mountain Band, and have been performing with the Green Hill Music Society Band for a couple of years now. I think I fool no one when I admit to having special interest in music, dance, fashion and horse racing, all of which I have supported personally and in my various publishing enterprises over the past years. Naturally then I tend to cover such events and organizations more than some others. These other events and organizations are no less worthy of attention. I just don’t have the time to cover them all. I try to let you know about events when I hear about them, but even when I hear about them I am often unable to attend them and bring them the attention they deserve. It is my sincere hope that some of you will find time to send in reports on events you attend. I have clear preference for posting reports filed by others. By way of example I would point to the report this week on Ales & Tales. I created my own report about that event, then replaced it with the fine report I stole from Aalloria. (and the addendum from Molly Bayberry)

We begin this week with the following notices found on the bulletin board of the Lonely Mountain Band. (Some minor editing has been done prior to posting them)
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
March 16 Bullroarer Took Eve celebration news!!

    by Aalloria Borealis on 2013/03/17

March 16th was an exciting day and night!! The Annual Bywater Steeple Chase Horse Race and Fashion Show was a huge success. A crowd of over 70 people showed up to the starting stage in Tookborough, with around 25 fashionably dressed participants in the fashion show organized and hosted by Kiralynn of the Lonely Mountain Band.

There were many fancy horses and exquisite costumes, most were dressed in green in honor of Bullroarer Took Day. We were entertained by many skillful horse tricks, like bows and rearing up, flaming breath and salutes. Aalloria Borealis won third prize in her Green jacket and top hat, playing a quick Irish Jig and a few horse tricks, for which she was awarded 500 tp allowing her to progress to the next questing area. Lhinnthel with her giant lily and light green outfit was awarded 500 tp and gold for her beautiful dress and dreamy horse. Genessa on her giant black Minstrel steed took first prize and 1000 tp with her coordinated outfit that everyone could admire. There were many other wondrous outfits, and it was a close vote for all.

Honorable mention went to Beorbrand in his fine green armor, Lilikate and Mimelen were a wonder to behold as well. The Bywater Steeple Chase followed directly after a short interlude of music by Faerochil and Harper. It was a huge line-up at the start in Bywater by the inn, with valiant steeds of every kind entered into the race. The pace course was run, a challenging race crossing waters, bridges, steep hills and dense woods. The early dawn sunrise brought out the many variant colors of all the racing costumes and horses, and the fresh morning air was filled with the electricity of excitement!

While Aalloria bolted out in front upon the signal by Kiralynn, Barabossa her Black Bay couldn't hold onto the lead as many more familiar with the Shire found excellent cross-country paths to the checkpoints. The lead passed back and forth many times, especially over the dam, rocks, and waters that were constant obstacles in the well laid out course. In the end Tweetybird took third place on her Green Winged Herald steed.

Captain Andeon, drinking from his victory cup and voicing challenges to the many riders, proved his worth in taking second place on his mighty mount, Annudir. The final victory, however, was to be won by the swift Huckleberry ridden by Nisael. The race was attended by so many, and the finish so close, that the judges used both video and screenshots to ensure a fair finish was reported, and everyone celebrated Nisael's victory.

At the conclusion of the Steeple Chase, Kiralynn totalled up the Racing Season points, and announced the overall circuit winners. In 6th place was our own Beorbrand with 8 points. Fifth place was won by Byrcha with 9 points. Nisael, with her Steeplechase victory, took 4th place with 12 points.

The circuit leaders, 3rd place was held by Lifebringer at 13 points. Then came the surprise! A tie for second place at 14 points between Captain Andeon and Caiyyd - the winner to be determined at the Spring Racing Carnival in April!! A rivalry has been established with betting of much gold going for both sides.

In the end, however, there can be only one - and that coveted position of First Place and the Grand Prize winner was Craicwyth. He secured his overall victory riding several steeds: Snowrose, Wanderer & Lossenmeril for a total of 25 points!!

Several riders challenged each other to re-matches, and various races and drinking parties were started so the celebrations could continue. At midnight the raunchy yet fun-loving Bards, Beer, and LongBeards Band took over from Animal House in front of Bree's own Prancing Pony, and gave a spirited concert to a crowd that fluxuated between 30 to 50 dancers. Shintako donated a couple of decorative Wooden Kegs for those with winning lyrics (editorial addition: in the limerick contest), as BBB played in their ornate green outfits perfect for the season!! Beag handed out around 300 booze and fireworks, as the band which consisted of 13 members (editorial addition: at one point Beag joined the band bringing the number of players up to an amazing 14!), played fast Jigs and ballads.

Overall, it was a great success, and everyone who participated continued to show the Landroval community how our spirit of togetherness and fun can transend (and result in) a world of adventure and friendship. Hearty thanks go out to everyone!!

    Andune Ensemble, 3-17-13

    by Aalloria Borealis on 2013/03/17

This year's Bullroarer Took Day was celebrated in fashionable style and grace as the Andune (Ensemble) played a set of wonderful dance songs for an audience of 25 to 30, mostly all clad in different shades and varieties of green outfits.

Leading the band, Kelidonna had selected an astonishing line-up of songs, to include favorites like Be My Baby Rosie Cotton, Hobbit Line Dancing, and Prunella's Umbrella!! The celebrations, dancing, and fireworks were breathtaking to behold.

This week's band included skilled musicians Aalloria Borealis, Lithelinea, Brenthiel, Charactry, Tomrica, Jorui, Floradine, Gaiagil, and of course Kelidonna - an all girl band of Hobbit lasses and Elven beauties. Make sure you show your support and join Andune for their weekly concerts around the lands every Sunday at 3pm.
    -------------------------------------------------------------
Music was a prominent part of the scene all of this past week beginning with “Bright Star in the Park”. The band played for its’ biggest audience to date, putting on a splendid show. The event was expanded with Doviel vending food, drink and pipe-weed to the audience and the popular duo of Merlinor and Cellindis providing a pre-show concert for those gathering early. Worthy of note, the Sons of Numenor were a prominent presence for the show, in the audience, providing security, and even providing a couple of members to play in the band.

A new prominent personality? I couldn’t help but notice Bertrus at a number of events this past week. More than once I heard folks speaking about the fashionable styles he wore to the various events. I also noticed him doing some very nice custom adaptations to his dance moves during the shows. I suspect this up and coming socialite will turn a few heads as time passes.

The next Windy Acres Ranch event is the Fool's Derby, scheduled for Wednesday, April 10th at 9:30pm. Meet at Hengstacer Farms north of Bree-town. The theme of the mounted fashion contest is ridiculous, comical outfits. Participants must show off their most colorful, outrageous clothing. The horse race is the Chetwood Cup, the first qualifier race for the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival and this year's Bree Cup.

Ales & Tales moved their traveling road show to Oatbarton this week. Directed by Master of Ceremonies Daeleg, this week the feature was on tales once again with offerings from Fyron, Lithelinea and part two of three from Melanie. Another highlight of the show, Kaleigh and Gennyrose reprised their special duet, originally performed at the Green Hill Music Society show last week, this time backed up by a superstar band composed of Wendy, Melanie, Madaelin and Bertrus.

Speaking of the Green Hill Music Society, this week their show got off to a bit of a late start and early finish, performing for something less than 40 minutes. To be honest (which I understand may get me into some hot water) the society’s shows have been a bit rough around the edges these past few months. Absent the steady guiding hand of maestro Falibrand each week, production values have dropped some. Kudos to Gennyrose who’s last minute heroics have saved the day more than once.

Racing wouldn’t happen without the folks working behind the scenes to make it all go so well. Thanks to judges Alesel, Bethanora, Byrcha, Hilthorin and Mornawen for their work on this season’s Bywater Steeplechase. No surprise, Byrcha and Mornawen are also among the folks who help Ales & Tales regularly both behind the scenes and on stage.

Is there a limit to the capacity of this land to support music? I begin to wonder. Besides such regular performers as the Andune Ensemble, Bards, Beers and longBeards, Old Winyards, and the Green Hill Music Society, recently Animal House and Bright Star have begun preforming fairly regularly. This week Tuesday at 5 pm in Bree I also stopped by a performance from a new quartet going by the name of one of their performers, Bruzo. All have provided fine performances and all have developed substantial followings of fans. I was fortunate enough to be there for at least part of all of these shows this week, and while I do not expect to be there for all performances each week, that is not a reflection of my opinion of these bands. In fact I have found them all to be fine performers.

The Spring Quickfoot (Quickfeet!!) Wedding 3-23-13
    by Aalloria Borealis

On a beautiful Spring afternoon, the Lonely Mountain Band and many other guests were witness to the joining of Tearna Fairchild and Tamoro Quickfoot in matrimony, with a beautiful, heartfelt ceremony. At a gorgeous setting at the gazebo on Pierson's Farm South of Bree, amongst the swaying Spring flowers and apple orchards, the crowd gathered around the buzzing of the bees and the light scent of lavender and honey slightly wafting in the air. The pale blue sky was in stark contrast against fierce looking clouds that brought a gentle, cooling breeze as the guests swayed and danced like trees in the wind.

The Andune Ensemble started the very musical night off with some lovely tunes, mixing in slow dances with some up-beat jigs that kept the dancing lighthearted and fun. Geoffri, Byrcha, Mornawen, Floradine, Aalloria, and Lilikate shared their talents as a gift to the wonderful couple, and everyone celebrated in song. Harperella led the dancing, coordinating both line and circle dances. The guests and the band were dressed to-the-nines in every shade of color and style of dress, a fine rainbow of merry-making.

Following several circle dances, everyone partnered up for a line dance, and then everyone joined together in a circle symbolizing the everlasting love of the couple. The band Bright Star then took over the musical rejoicing, and played the background music for the official ceremony, as well as a special song from Tamoro and Tearna themselves. The Best Man, Bertrus of the Lonely Mountain Band, and the Maid of Honor, Nightmagic of Animal House, officiated the Hobbit Wedding as the magnificent couple exchanged their vows. Many a tear was shed upon hearing their fondness for one another, and the joy they bring to each other's lives.

Bertrus announced the couple as Mr. and Mrs. Tamoro Quickfoot (Quickfeet!!) and everyone joined them in a few more delightful dances. In grand Hobbit tradition, the couple handed out delicious treats, firesnappers, and refreshing drinks to all their guests, as everyone lined up to wish the couple their very best, and to give gifts of their own....many a pie changed hands on this picturesque occasion.

Animal House started the after party with a modern and upbeat set, as the dancing and partying went on for quite a while following the ceremony. Nightmagic, WickedJfc, Nightchade, LastritesJfc, and Nightjasmine played well into the night, as the Sun set behind the mountains of the Barrows, and the stars rose in striking celebration for such a wonderful night.

(Editor’s note: kudos to Madaelin for putting together this fine wedding event. Also this note: there were blessings given by representatives from each of the four races, Lennidhren for the Elves, Berynun for Men, Gennyrose for the Hobbits and Balifor for the Dwarves. And I would be remiss if I did not offer my best wishes to the couple who first met at a Green Hill Music Society Concert!)

    ------------------------------------------------------------
Fresh off their appearance performing during the wedding ceremony of Tearna and Tamoro this past Saturday, Bright Star will be putting on a show this evening in Bree. Here are some details from their notice.
    ------------------------------------------------------------
The band Bright Star will be performing once again in the park across from the jail in Bree this Wednesday night 9:30. Come for an evening of music and dancing and please welcome our newest member Doviel as she makes her first appearance in a concert.

The members of Bright Star welcome you.

And speaking of bands the folks at The Lonely Mountain Band are busy doing the pre-planning for this years’ Weatherstock super concert. Watch here for details as they are announced.

Someone in the crowd said it. Speaking about the Andune Ensemble they said “they are so classy.” I often struggle with how to characterize the difference between the various bands I see in concert, and this comment pretty well sums it up for the Andune Ensemble. This week, less than 24 hours after their appearance at the wedding of Tamoro and Tearna, the Andune Ensemble was back in action out front of the Prancing Pony. Wearing their standard blue suits the band composed of Brenthiel, Lithelinea, Runesdaeg, Cennwyn, Geoffroi, Floradine and Aalloria also included the dwarf Thorvarr for their last few regular concert tunes. I say regular concert tunes, because in addition to their regularly scheduled “encore” I believe the band played on for a bit after the regular performance. The concert was especially sweet for me as I was able to get a few dance lessons from Madaelin. The dwarf dances in particular just give me fits attempting to get them timed.

For all you racing fans, the folks at the Windy Acres Ranch have released this information about the first qualifying race for the upcoming Spring Racing Carnival as follows. We will bring you more details as they are released.

    ----------------------------------------------------
The following report has been filed by past Landroval Times lead reporter Dori Bolger-Etal.
    ---------------------------------------------------
Some of you may have noticed the absence of Aldekim from the Green Hill Music Society concert this week in Michel Delving. No real difficulties were caused as the turnout of musicians was stronger than usual with Falibrand, Lyonardo, Kaleigh, Gennyrose, Tiridyn, Louni, Fincin, Molie, Tiriphor, Tunni, and Katelynrose all appearing on stage at some point and even Lycwolf lurking off stage should he be needed. Political issues within the music community caused Aldekim’s absence and I’m sure he will be greatly disturbed to hear that one tune included a part for pibgorn played by the versatile and talented Gennyrose. The part even sounded really good in the song (Kudo’s to the arranger, I believe it was Louni). Attendees on the concert scene surely notice the great difference in stage presence of the various bands. Most bands have nice uniforms and stage their performers with tall folks in back for a nice stage appearance. The Green Hill Music Society wears no uniforms and seems chaotic with respect to who stands where unless you understand the method to their seeming madness. For GHMS it is all about the music. What costume is worn is not a concern ever (Except maybe their annual fat hobbit concert and the wearin’ o’ the green for Bullroarer Took Day). Who stands where for each song varies, depending not on the stature of the performer (except maybe for Lyonardo who almost always stands out front despite all other considerations), but rather on the dynamics of the song being performed. Lead parts and parts requiring more volume are performed by artists standing at the front, supporting parts and parts needing to be toned down some in volume are played by artists standing to the rear. Back when the pibgorn was a new instrument and subject to volume issues Falibrand even had Aldekim play it once while standing on the roof of the Bird & Baby to help diminish its’ excessive loudness. (Thankfully recent developments have reduced the volume of the instrument, but the tone still causes it to have limited use for most songs).

An aside: during part or all of the show Kaleigh and Tiridyn both wore dark pink outfits. I certainly hope this is not indicative of any influence Aegthil of Bards, Beers and longBeards may have had on them. Such things are best kept to the rowdy midnight BBB shows at the Prancing Pony each Saturday.

As some of you may have noticed I did not perform with the Green Hill Music Society this week. Unfortunate political influences in the music industry (Based in some part on my work with the now defunct Landroval Times) dictated that I must take leave of absence from the band for the time being. While the problem is still being addressed, it is my hope that a reasonable resolution of the problem may be found so that I may one day return to performing with GHMS. Until that resolution is worked out I will not be performing with the band as I do not wish to allow my personal problems to have a negative effect on that fine band.

Music is blooming in Landroval, and this week has been a fine example of that trend.

Wednesday the musical week got started with the Bright Star in the Park concert in Bree in the park across from the jail. Typical of concerts the crowd was a bit small at first, but grew to be quite substantial as the concert progressed. Congratulations to Doviel who joined with the band for her first concert appearance.

As luck would have it I have been rather busy this past week, so I am grateful for the work of my most recent assistant Brambel who has filed the following report.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------
There’s always something going on around here. The music scene in Bree just seems to be never ending. Take this Thursday for example. Passing by the Prancing Pony I noticed a trio lead by Bruzo performing in the passage way next to the stairs. Across the way on the concert stage, Berynun was playing for a small gathering. Amused by the idea that two performers were playing at the same time, both drawing an audience, I decided to stop in the Pony to see what was going on inside. No surprise, there was music being performed by Beorndwyn there in front of the fireplace just inside the entrance. As I understand it Orladan also performed outside just a wee bit later. Truth be told there is more than just music going on around the realm.

A bit later that evening I was passing through Michel Delving and stopped in at the Bird & Baby for a bit of refreshment. Low and behold the Concerning Hobbits kinship was holding a party, open to the public, there and I was soon enjoying some free refreshments as I watched them putting on some kind of comedy contest. I can’t say I really understand just how it worked, but it seems the point of the contest was to determine who could tell the worst jokes??? It was a bit strange indeed, but very entertaining overall, though perhaps the free drinks and pipe-weed influenced my opinion of the whole thing. Unfortunately I arrived in the middle of the contest so I was only able to hear the presentations of Odobocar and Rozalinde, enjoying them both immensely.

Brambel Etal reporting for the Free Press.
    ---------------------------------------------------------
This week Ales & Tales was held on the front lawn of Tom Bombadil’s house in the Old Forest, and a strange event it was indeed. When I first arrived the guests were being treated to a couple of tunes by the up and coming celebrity duo of Merlinor and Cellindis (A pair quickly moving up on my list of favorite artists, who also performed during the main show). By strange I mean the atmosphere. Informally billed as the Aegthil’s Fool’s Day Concert, it was only the blue hue of the moonlight in Bombadil’s Glade that gave early disguise to the remarkable assortment of pink (Some say it is rose) garments worn by members of the audience, as well as by many of the evening’s performers. The remarkable array of pink garments worn by performers and audience became more obvious late in the show as the sun rose over the Old Forest.

Some new entertainment ground was broken before the show even began when Aalloria took the stage accompanied by Cellindis who did accompanying vocals from a spot at the rear and off to one side of the audience. The unworldly nature of the event became more obvious when Old Winyards took the stage to begin the show. The band made up of Lhinnthel, Craicwyth, Aalloria, Sonca (also master of mentoring for the evening), Mornawen, Galzagar, and for part of the show Tomeoric (also Master of Ceremonies for the event) was dressed in various styles mainly dominated by pinks (if you didn’t get lost trying to follow this sentence you have my deepest respect). Perhaps most noteworthy (And quite in line with what one might expect from Aegthil), Galzagar was quite striking appearing with his usual bearded grooming and wearing a very nice DRESS!

Noteworthy entertainers included the duo of Kyrian and Galzagar performing in matching dresses, and up and coming socialite Bertrus performing a duet with the ever charming Madaelin. Comedy must be a current new trend as Billing put on a splendid comedy act (echoing the performance attended by Brambel in the Shire earlier in the week). All in all it was a splendid show, though the dancing was somewhat subdued due to the uneven ground surrounding Old Bombadil’s place.

It’s funny how similar things happen at closely related times (As with the comedy productions mentioned above). Case in point, the Green Hill Music Society Concert. Ten performers, Gennyrose, Katelynrose, Fincin, Falibrand, Puppo, Tiridyn, Tiriphor, Louni, Tunni, and yours truly Aldekim performed in various roles at the GHMS Concert this week. Lyonardo was in the audience for the beginning of the show, but did not perform with the band this week. Strange similarities began right away as Tiriphor sang dressed in drag along with Tiridyn for the very first song. I doubt Tiriphor was even aware of Galzagar dressed in drag for the Ales & Tales performance this week (I have to wonder if this crossdressing and the pink costumes worn by Old Winyards this week aren’t a sign of the influence of Bards, Beers and longBeards on local musicians). I suppose GHMS concerts don’t berak down into the total chaos typically associated with a BBB concert largely due to the presence of Bounders of the Shire like Chief Meadowlarke who attended the GHMS show this week asserting a degree of orderliness on the event.

The performance od Tiridyn and Tiriphor also followed in the footsteps of a new trend for presenting theatrical vocal duets, begun recently by Gennyrose and Kaleigh who did so at two recent concerts. Overall it was a very nice, if slightly chaotic concert. All of the shuffling in and out of musicians in a typical GHMS performance seems to take its’ toll on the overall performance, creating delays here and there. Despite the somewhat uneven pace of the show I have to say the Frontman skills of Tiridyn have really improved over the past several weeks, to the point where he is now one of the finest frontmen around. It is also nice to see the variety of performers allowed to strut their stuff at a GHMS concert. Vocals were done this week by Tiridyn, Tiriphor, Louni “the Singing Dwarf”, and Falibrand, with Tiridyn, Falibrand and Louni also sharing in the introduction of various tunes.

From the desk of Aldekim Etal

Things are a bit quiet now, but that is about to end. In the next several weeks we will be seeing the Anniversary Celebration, The Spring Racing Carnival II, the Spring Festival, and Weatherstock V. Then before you know it the Summer Festival will be upon us. So catch your breath and save up some energy. You are going to need it.

Clearing the air some: From time to time over the past year I have received requests or questions regarding the use of illustrations in the Landroval Times and here at the Free Press. I have no doubt illustrations would dress things up a bit, and make viewing the publication go more quickly. The thing is, in a world of more and more…u don’t have to w8 2 read ur news when u can twit it in 140 characters or less, the Free Press is by intention a place where expressing ideas and images through the written word is the point. While he created many illustrations, JRRT only included one illustration in There and Back Again (and none in the trilogy) and I suspect that was included mainly as a means of letting people figure out his runic alphabet. I openly encourage folks to publish their own material here in the Lonely Mountain Free Press topic and I have no problem with such postings including as many or few graphics as an author desires. Here in my postings I will be sticking to the age old method of painting pictures, and expressing ideas, with complete words, without illustrations.

Then there is this notice I see around Bree, also for an event tonight.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------
It's that time again. Come to the park across from the Jail in Bree this Wed night (4/10) at 9:30 PM Server time and enjoy a evening of song and dance as the members of Bright Star (Orladan, Sholah, Aevi, Doviel and our resident drummer Daylak) perform for you. This week's songs were handpicked by Aevireth herself.
    -----------------------------------------------------------------
This week the Andune Ensemble show was a bit like a band convention. Besides the band members performing this week as part of the Ensemble, Geoffroi, Runesdaeg, Brenthiel, Cennwyn, Jorui, Tomeoric, Floradine and Aalloria, the audience was filled with performing artists from other bands.

In the audience I noticed Fionnuala, Fincin, Sonca, Nightjasmine, Aevireth, Madaelin, Lambain, Llellewynn, Mayie, Puppo, Faflu, Daylak and Kaleigh. These include performers from Bright Star, Animal House, Bards Beers and longBeards, The Green Hill Music Society, Old Winyards, Mar Vanwa Tyalieva, Melanie and Friends, and Die Meisterbarden von Bree as well as other groups. In fact Die Meisterbarden set up to perform for the remaining audience after the Andune show, though I am not sure they performed as their set up took quite a bit of time and I had to move on. Passing by the stage area a while later I noticed that Fincin and Puppo had taken the stage and were playing. Other noteworthy folks in the audience included Alisette, Berynun, Tamoro, Tearna, Luciee, Beno, Lerillos and Moragaeth. All in all, a pretty impressive list of personalities.
    --------------------------------------------------------
A new act stole the show this week when Ales & Tales staged its’ event at the stage on the Scholar Stairs in Bree. With Old Winyards, the house band for Ales & Tales, it’s like the proverbial box o’ chocolates. You never know just what you will get. This week the band was comprised of Neruwyn, Galzagar, Lithelinea, Mornawyn and Tomeoric, with Sonca added in for good measure for the end of show dance set. Under the Master of Ceremonies work of Tamoro with Musical Mentoring directed by Sonca, a highlight of the show for me was the duet performed by Kaleigh and Madaelin. The audience was also clearly impressed by the “musical tale” offered by Lithelinea. Still it can’t be argued, the show was certainly stolen by the premier appearance of Aalloria Borealis Pirated Princess and the Old Harpy’s Crew Band.

The Pirate performance began when Aalloria took the stage. Ten band members scattered around the audience joined in (shortly after a dwarf character approached the stage creating a small distraction, later it was revealed that the dwarf was in fact part of the show). For their second number the entire pirate band moved on stage, creating a rather spectacular visual, all eleven being hobbits in similar garb. After the second song the nature of the dwarf (Hughli) was revealed and he proposed marriage to Aalloria (That proposal being real or just a stage effect is still a bit unclear to me). Overall the audience seemed quite thrilled by the performance.

If you like variety in your music and aren’t too concerned with production values, then the Green Hill Music Society concerts are the place to be. You won’t find performers all in matching outfits. You won’t find performers lined up nicely on stage. Performers shuffle in and out of formation with each song. What you will find is an amazing variety of music, well performed. Pop, rock, jazz, bluegrass, even a little classical now and then. The musical variety experienced at a GHMS performance can be amazing. This week I was especially happy to see Rohanwood back doing one of her trademark torch songs with the band. I would also like to mention the fine pre-concert performances put on by the duo’s of Fincin and Puppo, and Cellindis and Merlinor before the GHMS concert began. Both of these duos play some really fine tunes. So stop by the Bird & Baby in Michel Delving 10 p.m. any Tuesday evening and enjoy some fine music.

Once a rider has finished top three (1st, 2nd or 3rd place) in a qualifier race, he is invited to participate in the Bree Championship Cup. Qualified riders cannot participate in further qualifier races, in order to give more riders a chance to earn an invitation.

These eighteen riders are likely to be veterans from the regular racing season. Riders earned points for each race they participated in during the previous year. The rider standings show which riders won the most races and which have the most experience. Craicwyth earned the highest score for the season. Andeon, Caiyyd, Lifebringer, Nisael and Byrcha are also in the top five ranks. Any of these riders could win the championship race, but as the standings show, sometimes a dark horse gallops across the finish line first. Issue 20 of the Windy Acres Ranch equestrian newsletter has a complete list of all the horse racing tips and tricks compiled over the last two years. Riders should read the event rules before participating.

Equestrian fans can wager on each of the races. A volunteer from Windy Acres acts as a bookie, accepting bets from the audience. You can bet on a race by contacting the bookie with the name of one rider that you think will win the race. (It is a good idea to use /tell to contact the Bookie.) The bet must be placed before the race begins. When the race is over, the names of fans who picked the winning rider are thrown in a hat. A name is drawn at random and this lucky person wins a prize.

There are several other events scheduled for the Spring Racing Carnival. A parade of rare horse breeds will take place in front of the Bree Town Hall, followed by a concert featuring several famous musicians. The Windy Acres Riding Team will demonstrate formation riding in the Horsefields near the festival grounds north of the city. The audience will choose the winners of a mounted fashion contest. There are also rumors that horses and tack may be sold at discount prices.

Participation in all events is free. Guests from other games and servers are welcome. If you would like to host an event at the Spring Racing Carnival or have questions about an existing event, contact Kiralynn of Landroval. Windy Acres Ranch Racing FAQ
    by Kiralynn of Rohan
The Galloping Gala is fast approaching. First-time riders bring new talent, stylish outfits, and a lot of questions. We'll answer some of the most common questions in this article.

"How can you race horses? Aren't they all the same speed?"
Although the +62% and +68% steeds run at the same speed, there are many factors that affect how quickly they can complete a race course. Most courses are lengthy, with numerous obstacles and creatures along the way. A rider's ability to find the shortest path between checkpoints and navigate difficult terrain determines how well he will perform. Lag and experience are also factors.

"I don't have a war steed. How can I compete?"
There are three types of horse race - Standard, Fast, and War Steed. Standard races are for +62% horses and ponies, such as holiday and reputation steeds. Fast races are for +68% mounts, such as the Steed of Night and the Steed of the Dusk-watch. War steed races allow all horses and ponies. Speed enhancers and special forms of travel are not allowed. As long as you have a horse in the proper speed class, you have a good chance of winning a race.

"How can I tell what speed my horse/pony/goat is?"
For war steeds, open the Mounted Combat window and click the Stats tab. Look for the "War Steed Movement" section of the right column. "Max Speed" is the best movement rate your war steed can achieve. If you are riding a non-combat steed, open the Skills window and click the Mounts tab. Mouse-over the steed's portrait to view its stats. Most non-combat horses are +62% speed. Most store exclusive horses are +68% speed.

"You ask for my horse's name and breed to register. What are these?"
The "breed" of your horse is it's type. For example - Steed of Minas Ithil, Yule Festival Snowy Horse, Prized Rivendell Horse, or Chestnut Horse. Your horse's name is visible while you are riding it. Look for your mount display panel. It has your horse's portrait, morale/power, and a Dismount button. It also shows speed for war steeds. Your steed's name appears at the top. Each breed has a default name. You can right-click the portrait to rename your steed.

    "What is the entry fee?"
There is never an entry fee to participate in an event hosted by Windy Acres Ranch. However, the final four qualifier races of the Spring Racing Carnival have an entry fee of 1 gold. This is to increase the prize pot for the championship race. The final qualifier races are sponsored by Windy Acres, the Lonely Mountain Band and Turbine.

"How do I know where to ride?"
All of the race routes are posted at WindyAcres.MyMiddleEarth.com before the race begins. You can view the race map and explore the route in-game. There is also a "pace lap" before all races except for cross-country challenges. During a pace lap, the race master leads the riders around the course, stopping at each checkpoint. Riders who don't study the race map or pay attention during the pace lap often get lost along the way.

    "How do you prevent cheating?"
The race master and course judges monitor the event. Race rules have been carefully crafted to discourage cheating. (edited copy: Use this address to read the article "How Horse Races Work" for a full explanation http://windyacres.mymiddleearth.com/?page_id=35 ). Turbine also applies a "Game In Progress" debuff to limit speed to 100% at some events.

"Why do you have a bookie? Isn't race wagering the same as gambling?"
Not at all. When you "place a wager" at a Windy Acres race, you simply choose the name of the rider you believe will win and /tell this name to the bookie. After the race, one name is selected randomly from the list of people who guessed correctly. This person wins a prize. You don't give anyone gold to wager, so there is nothing to lose.

    "What is a qualifier race?"
At the end of the racing season, we organize a huge event called the Spring Racing Carnival. This usually takes place during the Galloping Gala, an equestrian-themed multi-server festival sponsored by Turbine. The finale of the Spring Racing Carnival is a horse race called the "Bree Championship Cup". The Bree Cup prize is enormous. Riders may only participate if they have an invitation. A rider must win top three (first, second or third place) in a qualifier race to be invited. There are six qualifier races, so eighteen riders will qualify for the championship race.

"What kinds of events do you host and when is the next one?"
We host horse races, mounted fashion contests, formation riding team demonstrations, mystery roleplay stories, talent shows, cross-country rides, horse parades, and holiday parties. Check the Event Schedule for the latest list of activities. You can also check LOTRO's "Landroval" and "In-Game Player Events" forums.

"Where do the prizes come from?"
Kiralynn supplies most of the Turbine Point prizes. Members of the Lonely Mountain Band kinship donate most of the gold, cosmetic items, and mount codes. Turbine sponsors the big events with Turbine Points, store items, discount coupons, and mount codes. (They will sponsor anyone who hosts a well-organized public event and asks politely.) Occasionally racing fans donate gold or cosmetic items.

"I love Windy Acres! How do I help?"
Races would be impossible without volunteers acting as course judges. Races require a judge for every checkpoint. If you would like to volunteer, click here to read "How To Judge A Race". You can also help by posting news of Windy Acres events on the various LOTRO/MMO-related forums and web sites you visit.

"I heard you give away Perlinos and Turbine Points. Can I have some?"
We don't give things way. You must win an event to earn a prize. No, we will not give you a prize now and let you win an event later.

"I am running an equestrian event. Will you advertise it?"
Absolutely! Send an email to kiralynn@roll3d6.com with your event title, server, date, time, location, rules and prizes. Include contact information for the event host(s). If possible, send a 600px wide by 400px high advertisement image. Please try to send this information at least one week before your event.
    ----------------------------------
There is also this coverage of the recent Chetwood Cup Race as reported by Kiralynn.
    ----------------------------------

The 2013 Spring Racing Carnival began on Wednesday evening with the Chetwood Cup, the first qualifier race leading up to the Bree Championship Cup. Thirteen riders from around Eriador gathered at Hengstacer Farms to compete for the right to participate in that prestigious race. A crowd gathered to enjoy music and fireworks.

The evening's events began with the Fool's Derby, a jester-themed mounted fashion contest. Contestants were challenged to come up with wild, colorful outfits and matching tack. Eight riders took the stage, performing equestrian stunts to impress the crowd and earn their votes. Click here to view each of the outfits.

The voting was close, but three riders emerged victorious. An honorable mention was awarded to Craicwyth. Third place and 3 gold were awarded to Cairaen wearing a heavily embroidered elven robe. Second place and 5 gold were awarded to Caiyyd, wearing a matching pink robe and cloak with yellow embroidery. Her war steed wore a caparison and leggings in equally bright pink. First place and 10 gold were awarded to Aalloria. She wore a pink and lavender outfit with a vest embroidered in cyan. Despite wearing a hilarious pig mask, she was able to perform an impressive fire-breathing act.

With the top "fools" enjoying their coins, it was time for the qualifier race. Registration included Cairaen on pale golden summer steed Fanuilos, Caiyyd on blue roan Wind Runner, Craicwyth on yule glittering Snowrose, Daeleg on Grey Company trained Foggy, Hullis on blonde sorrel Corriander, Kattalina on yule frosty Snowball, Lifebringer on perlino Quincy, Maytook on Horse Lords bred Tookland Racer, Mirarose on Eastemnet bred Armor, Nisael on chestnut Huckleberry, Rasenbeth on blood bay Midnight Run, Runesdaeg on Eglain-bred Earthe upon Earthe, and Shintako on Mathom Society trained Aleph.

A crowd gathered at the start line, finding good places to view the race from atop barns, fences, and stone walls. Several veteran riders were seen in the crowd, sizing up the competition. Over half of the registered riders were Windy Acres race regulars, a handful of which had competed at Hengstacer Farms last season. Last years’ winner, Calatharan, volunteered to act as bookie and judge the course. After a smooth pace lap, the Call to Post sounded and the riders lined up at the start. Final wagers were placed. The start was delayed a few moments as an Eglan steed on the bit was pulled back to the starting line.

The race began with a shout and a dropped arm. Instantly, thirteen horses surged forward, galloping down the path toward the first checkpoint. The initial length was fairly straight over well-packed earth, so a good start was key to reaching the gate first. A few riders tried to take a shortcut through the pasture, but the uneven ground and fence jumps cost them an early lead. A fallen tree blocked the hard dirt path leading to the second checkpoint. The fresh horses jumped over it with ease.

Several horses went wide at the ruins, losing ground on their way to the third checkpoint. The back stretch proved to be the most difficult part of the race. Some riders took the cautious path down the cliff at the pond while others risked the cliff face. A trio of horses took minor injuries and fell behind. A pair of riders lost sight of the shortest route on their way to the final checkpoint.

Despite half of the riders falling behind, competition was still tight between the leaders. Five horses charged toward the finish line in a tight group. The crowd cheered as they came into sight approaching the final gate. Nisael brought her chestnut horse across the finish line first, winning by a neck. Lifebringer's yearling Quincy gave a last burst of speed but failed to overtake Huckleberry, finishing in second place. Less than three lengths behind, Tookland Racer placed a respectable third, earning rider Maytook an invitation to the championship race in May.

Nisael, Lifebringer and Maytook have secured their slots in the Bree Cup. Five qualifier races remain. The next opportunity will come on Saturday, April 20 at 1:00pm EST as riders gather in Duillond for the Beryl Cup. Expect to see a number of veteran riders turn out for this race.

Three wagers were placed on Nisael by Mirarose, Maytook and Nisael herself. One name was chosen randomly. Mirarose won a rare Cremello horse from the Windy Acres stable!

Many thanks to race course judges Aalloria, Byrcha, Calatharan and Sigvalr. Races would not be possible without the hard work of volunteers. ((Thanks to Turbine for providing the "Game In Progress" speed debuff)) Thank you to our sponsor Floradine for donating the Cremello steed code.

The Spring Racing Carnival is scheduled for the first Friday and Saturday in May. Check the Event Schedule for the latest times and dates. We hope to see you at the races!

The Spring Racing Festival is going strong now. Here are the results of the latest race.
    -----------------------------------------------------------
Beryl Cup - Sat April 20 at 1pm in Duillond
    by Kiralynn of Rohan

The Beryl Cup race was held this past Saturday. Thirteen riders registered for the race and gathered near the stables of Duillond, along with a small crowd of racing enthusiasts. The all-hobbit pirate band Old Harpy Crew arrived to provide music and entertainment. Several riders explored the course and trained in the hour before post time.

After one scratch, the race roster included Aalloria on bay Barbossa, Andeon on anniversary-clad Cerulean, Breglas on harvestmath steed Mallow, Byrcha on smokey black Coffee, Craicwyth on glittering yule Snowrose, Crazypants on Mathom steed Cookie, Daeleg on Grey Company-bred Foggy, Eliwren on blonde sorrel Saydrie, Kikilaa on winged herald clad Mogli, Runesdaeg on Elgan-bred “Erthe upon Erthe”, Shintako on blonde sorrel Phenomenon, and Vethlo on red-clad steed of the Gap Topaz.

A field of veterans with only two wildcards took their place on the starting line. Only fifteen invitations for the Spring Racing Carnival’s championship race remained unclaimed and three would be awarded at the end of the race. Some of the season’s strongest horses stood calmly, waiting for their riders to spur them into fierce competition.

The course ahead was short but challenging. The Duillond course begins with sharp turns, steep stairs and a narrow bridge crossing. The track bends around jagged cliffs and then leads upward into hills that test a steed’s endurance. After a sharp turn around a lone Autumn tree, the path makes riders choose between a narrow path likely to cause their horse to trip and a steep cliff. Next, horses charge through a shallow pond, turn onto a stone road, and charge to the finish line.

The race master’s yell set the field in motion and a cheer went up from the crowd. Several stood on a beautiful elven balcony that afforded a wide view of the back stretch, waiting for the horses to come into view. The competition was tight and it was difficult to predict who would win until the final hundred yards. Saydrie brought Eliwren across the finish line first, leading by a length. Kikilaa guided her steed Mogli into second place by a nose, barely outpacing Andeon’s Cerulean in third. Season champion Craicwyth was only two lengths behind in fourth place. He will undoubtedly earn his Bree Cup invitation during the SRC.

The event ended with more music and fireworks. Gold was awarded to the winners. The list of riders invited to the Bree Championship Cup now includes Nisael, Eliwren, Lifebringer, Kikilaa, Maytook and Andeon. The next two qualifier races will be held on the evening of Friday, May 3rd. The final two are scheduled for the early afternoon of Saturday, May 4th. The championship race is tentatively scheduled for 7:30pm, however racers should arrive at least half an hour before post time to confirm their registration.

Many thanks to members of the Lonely Mountain Band who donated prize money. Special thanks to Anthemisa, Mornawen, Naethril and Sonca who acted as course judges. Much gratitude to the Old Harpy Crew for entertaining the crowd. Visit us often for more news and SRC schedule information. Thank you for joining us and we’ll see you at the races!

Rain, the Anniversary Celebration and double experience all combined still weren’t enough to keep folks away from the Andune Ensemble Concert this week. Nine strong this week including Thorvarr, Jorui, Geoffroi, Runesdaeg, Floradine, Jaynna, Aalloria, Cennwyn and Lithelinea they combined to put on the usual fine Andune show. Followed later by a performance by Die Meisterbarden von Bree, it is beginning to look like Sunday is becoming music day in Bree.

Monday it was Ales & Tales in Trestlebridge. Under the Master of Ceremonies work of Naethril, with Master of Mentoring done by Sonce and announcements handled by Byrcha the show this week was dominated by duets. Merlinor & Cellindis, Galzagar & Kyrian, Aegtha & Aaloria, and Mornawen and Aldekim (Yes that’s me) all performed for the audience. Besides the honor of performing alongside Mornawen I was most thrilled when I had the opportunity to mentor Merlinor during the musical mentoring session. It was an honor to mentor someone who has already made such a considerable mark on the music scene. As is always the case, Old Winyards began the show with a group performance comprised of musicians Lhinnthel, Galzagar, Mornawen, Byrcha, Sonca, and Aalloria.

Tuesday it was time once again for the Green Hill Music Society Concert in Michel Delving. A really large group of musicians performed with the society this week including Lyonardo, Kaleigh, Gennyrose, Tiridyn, Tiriphor, Fincin, Puppo, Marri, Yinglori, Louni, Katelynrose and your truly Aldekim (absent typical appearances by Falibrand and Tunni this showing of twelve performers is quite noteworthy). In fact for the first few numbers the band outnumbered the audience, which eventually grew to its’ normal size as the show progressed. If I had to select a highlight of this fine concert it would have to be Gennyrose performing for the first time as a featured torch song vocalist, a role mainly filled in the past by Rohanwood.

From the desk of Aldekim Etal

With the recent dramatic increase in the number of bands performing regularly in the area Weatherstock V this year promises to be even better than in the past (and possibly bigger). With a tentative May 6 first date for the registration of bands to perform at the event, news about who will be there should be forthcoming very soon. My sources tell me several bands have already expressed interest in performing. Planning for the event has already been underway for a few weeks and a grand event is certain to be the result. With competition restricted to ten bands in the past, there could be pressure as the number of available bands clearly exceeds that.

Speaking about the music scene, rumor has it that Lady Fionnuala is working on a new publication focused on music. Early negotiations are underway for this reporter to be included as a contributing source for that publication. Keep an eye here for details as they become available.

It was a rare pleasure for me to attend the Andunie Concert Presentation of Carmina Burana this past Saturday at the Prancing Pony Concert Stage. Performed by Fionnuala, Tameren, Taendis, Makalaure, Ansalimo, Netteelen, Phedelene, Ledepeter and Thonriel with narration by Fionnuala, it was a really special performance and very well attended. (prior to the show the audience was warmed up with a special performance by Fincin, Tessariel and Puppo) Soon after the concert the audience was treated to an additional performance by Proudfeet (Rayanna and Calanthine, though Calanthine pulled a mad Baggins disappearing from time to time during the show).

That Fincin really gets around. I saw Fincin performing with no less than three groups this week, appearing with the Green Hill Music Society Tuesday, Bright Star for their “In the Park” Concert Wednesday and just prior to the Carmina Concert as noted on Saturday. Also appearing with Bright Star Wednesday were Doviel, Daylak, Aevireth, Orladan, and Sholah.

o The race host will take all riders on a pace lap of the course before it begins. It is up to the riders to remember the checkpoints and find the shortest path between them during the race.
o Riders must clear all checkpoints in the proper direction and order. Course judges are the final authority in determining if a checkpoint has been properly cleared. A decision can be appealed if screenshots or video can be presented immediately after the race.
o If a rider falls from his horse, he may mount up again and continue the race. He will not be disqualified for swimming if he is dismounted at a water crossing.
o The winner will be determined by the first rider to cross the finish line, not the first mount.

    Horse Show Rules
o Riders must ride on stage only when their name is called by the host. If a rider doesn’t respond promptly, or goes on stage before his/her name is called, they will be disqualified.
o Riders will have approximately 30 seconds on stage. Each rider should walk their horse onto the stage, display their outfit, and then exit on the other side.
o Each rider can exhibit only one horse and outfit.
o Riders can perform emotes and use items to help show off their horse and outfit.
o After each rider has a turn on the stage, the host will call all riders onto the stage for final judging.
o Any sort of unsportsmanlike behavior (such as spamming) will result in disqualification and your vote will not count.
o At the end, each participant and member of the audience can cast one vote for the winner. You can vote for yourself.

Despite some early griefing (nicely handled by the authorities) the Andune Ensemble put on another fine show this past week. Concert circuit regular Kikilaa of Die Meisterbarden von Bree was on hand to entertain those who arrived early and also did some nice publicity work as the show got going. Performing for a sizable audience the band this week included Jorui, Geoffroi, Brenthiel, Floradine, and Bellcari. If the rumor mill is accurate Andune’s leader Geoffroi is doing much of the organizing, including selecting the Lonely Mountain Band play list, for this weekend’s Spring Racing Carnival concerts.

This week Ales & Tales was held inside the Bree Auction Hall. Directed by the Mistress of Ceremonies work of Aalloria the Pirate Princess, the show also featured the Musical Mentoring guidance of Sonca (Now pretty much a given for this specialty) with announcements handled by Byrcha, who also typically organizes Old Winyards for shows recently. This week Old Winyards was composed of Byrcha, Sonca, Lhinnthel, Mornawen,Galzagar, Aalloria, and Tomrica who did vocals for the opening number. Highlights of the show included a fine vocal duet by Bethyn and Grayhawke, and the return to the Ales & Tales stage of Proudfeet (The duo of Rayanna and Calanthine). A special highlight of the show was a performance by the Runic Knights Orchestra comprised of Hartsing, Primrosiah, Sanicle, Belathriel, Steeloak,Grimbori, and Hordmod. I have to wonder if this performance was a warm up for a possible Weatherstock appearance by the band.

What a strange perspective. Fifteen various performers were present for the Green Hill Music Society Concert this week including Rohanwood, Kaleigh, Falibrand, Gennyrose, Tiridyn, Fincin, Puppo, Marre, Louni, Tunni, Katelynrose, Tiriphor, Lycwolf, Lyonardo, and me, Aldekim. I think at the beginning of the show the band may have outnumbered the audience. It strikes me GHMS is becoming the standard setter in performance vocals. No less than five performers sang during the show, with a sixth credited with creating lyrics for one of the songs. Rohanwood, Gennyrose, Falibrand Tiridyn and Kaleigh all receive credit in this respect. It might well have been more if Louni the Singing Dwarf had done a vocal this week, but as luck would have it he did not. Fincin and Tiriphor are also known to do vocals now and then with this band. I may well be the only regular member of the band not doing vocals, but then I am the band’s principle pibgornist, and was thrilled to perform on that much maligned instrument once again this week. It pleased me greatly to see Melanie in the audience for the show. A noted member of the concert scene crowd, she has been conspicuous by her absence from recent concerts.

Intrigued by a post I saw from our Dynamic Deutsch Fraulein Floradine I stopped by the Prancing Pony Wednesday night for the first performance by a new band going by the name of “Flock of Smeagols.” More a duet than a band the dwarf Durrann and his hobbit associate Codella put on a nice show despite a serious griefer and interference now and then from folks who discovered they must launch fireworks from the Prancing Pony Courtyard Stage in order to complete an Anniversary Fireworks quest.

The Spring Racing Carnival got under way in earnest Friday with two races as reported on here by the folks from the Windy Acres Ranch.

SRC Begins With Fine Music and New Riders
by Kiralynn of Rohan on 2013/05/03

The Spring Racing Carnival began with a volley of colorful fireworks on Friday night. The rain cleared just in time for the pre-race festivities in Michel Delving. Several riders were seen practicing the course before the ground had dried from the storm.

Twelve riders registered for the Mathom Cup. The course judges played music to entertain the crowd while the race master made sure the riders knew the rules. Signing up for the race - Aalloria on bay Barbossa, Caiyyd on blue roan Windrunner, Calatharan on Algraid-bred Flapjack, Craicwyth on glittering Yule Snowrose, Draugelen on grey Sheer, Errowen on Eastemnet-trained Thunderfoot, Faerochil on smokey black Tiernan, Lonsen on blonde sorrel Highbright, Meneladan on glittering Yule Firien, Menina on Autumnfest-clad Kanga, Shintako on blue roan Zephyrus, and Vrehn on bay Hawthorn.

At the call to post, there was considerable jockeying for position at the start line. Once the horses settled down, the race master moved into position. The crowd was breathless with anticipation. With a shout of "Charge!" the race began. The course took the riders up into the south farms, back down through Waymeet, across Sanderson's chicken farm, and back into Michel Delving.

Aalloria brought Barbossa across the finish line first with a clear length-and-a-half lead, winning 10 gold and 1,000 Turbine Points. Craicwyth rode into a solid second place. Shintako outpaced Errowen by mere inches in a dramatic photo-finish. A length behind, newcomer Draugelen missed his chance to compete in the Bree Cup.

A group of racing fans rode together to the site of the fourth qualifier race of the season, the illustrious Moonstone Cup held in the beautiful elven city of Duillond. The pre-race concert featured "Bright Star" - Orladan, Sholah, Aevireth, Daylak, Doviel and Aelaan. This amazing band drew a large crowd who danced with great enthusiasm until post time.

With the sun setting over Ered Luin, eleven riders registered for the Moonstone Cup - Caiyyd on blue roan Windrunner, Calatharan on Algraig-bred Flapjack, Draugelen on Esteldin-bred Scout, Emlissel on blonde sorrel Sifflaed, Errowen on Eastemnet-trained Thunderfoot, Faerochil on smokey black Tiernan, Lhinnthel on grey Tucker, Meneladan on glittering Yule Firien, Menina on Autumnfest-clad Kanga, Rosiee on Mathom-bred Speckles, and Vrehn on bay Hawthorn. The bookie took a record number of wagers.

The call to post sounded and the crowd made their way to the start line. With fewer first-time horses chomping at the bit, the race started quickly. The Moonstone Cup course is one of the most difficult, forcing steeds to climb winding stone stairs, cross bridges suspended high above the ground, pass through narrow gates, and charge up steep hills. The clatter of hooves on cobblestone heralded the return of the horses from the back stretch. The crowd began cheering for their favorites as the leaders charged toward the finish line.

The race proved to be a boon for novice riders. Errowen's dedication paid off as she rode Thunderfoot to victory. Two lengths behind, Draugelen also demonstrated that hard work pays off. Galloping into third place by a neck, Sifflaed brought an elated Emlissel across the finish line. Drawing randomly from the list of wagers placed on Errowen, Meneladan won a landscape soldier token.

The list of qualified riders now includes -- Aalloria, Andeon, Craicwyth, Draugelen, Eliwren, Emlissel, Errowen, Kikilaa, Lifebringer, Maytook, Nisael, and Shintako.

Assuming they register for the final two qualifier races on Saturday, the bookies have made some interesting predictions. Placing sixth in the Mathom Cup and fifth in the Moonstone Cup, look for a strong performance by Caiyyd and Windrunner. Meneladan showed considerable improvement, following an eighth with a fourth place finish. Faerochil's Tiernan has the tenacity and endurance to take the lead. Also look for a winning run from Beorbrand if he joins the competition.

Our thanks to Atli Spider-bane of Archet and Faerochil for their sponsorship, covering the race entry fees. Many thanks to Sapience for providing amazing Turbine Point prizes. Thanks to the Lonely Mountain Band for providing generous gold prizes. Thank you to Bright Star for providing beautiful music. Many thanks to our judges - Byrcha, Floradine, Limorel, Mornawen, Patria, and Sonca. These events would not be possible without volunteers and sponsors.

    Spring Racing Carnival Round-Up
by Kiralynn of Rohan on 2013/05/05

Greetings, racing fans! Saturday was an exciting day on Landroval as the Spring Racing Carnival ran toward its amazing finale. Here is a quick report on the events.

The racing began early in Gondamon for the Mithril Cup. The crowd was welcomed by an incredible musical performance by Die Meisterbarden von Bree. the audience danced to a number of equestrian-themed favorites.

As the sun reached its zenith, the riders lined up to prepare for the start of the race. Eleven riders registered but there was one scratch as a rider was unable to make the trip from Rohan in time.

The Mithril Cup course forces riders to face angry Dourhands, steep cliffs, and a difficult choice of shortcuts.

The race was won by a trio of elven women - Euriel, Lelirnel and Falathielle - who proved that they could ride the lands of Ered Luin better than hobbits or men.

Before the judges could catch their breaths, it was time to mount up and head to Michel Delving for the final qualifier race. Tensions were high, as this was every rider's final opportunity to qualify for the Bree Championship Cup. Breakfast Club attracted a huge crowd despite fickle weather.

The intermittent rains had left the course soggy and difficult to run. Fifteen riders looked pensive during the pace lap, following the tracks of veteran riders who had practiced earlier in the day.

The course led them through the south fields and Waymeet, across Sanderson's chicken farm, through Michel Delving's north cow fields, and back to the road that leads to the Inn.

At the finish line, newcomer Rasenbeth won with a healthy lead, followed by Caiyyd and Gwadrodewyn. With the addition of these three riders, the Bree Cup roster was complete.

The Bree Cup was scheduled for later in the evening, giving the qualified riders five hours to rest and wrestle with their fears.

The second round of events kicked off at the Horsefields north of Bree, as the formation riding team gave a demonstration of quadrille dressage. They also introduced their new war steeds, which are currently being trained in dressage. Music was provided by Die Meisterbarden von Bree, who assembled the largest band of the Spring Racing Carnival.

As the riding team demonstration concluded, there was a group ride to Bree, allowing the crowd to show off their own horses. The procession led to the city's town hall. Once the crowd had settled, it was time for the horse parade. Riders in beautiful outfits showed the audience a series of rare breeds, including the noble grey, Bright Days, Minas Ithil, Dagorlad, Horse Lords, winged herald, and Eriador steeds.

The sun went down and it was time for the Spring Concert. The show opened with a group of hobbits in a rainbow of dress colors launching coordinated volleys of fireworks into the sky. As a massive crowd gathered, Andune took the stage and played many wonderful songs that were perfect for dancing.

As the concert wound down, contestants lined up for a fashion show. Seventeen riders took the stage with outfits designed to match their horses and tack.

Beag received an honorable mention. Kattalina won third place and 1,000 Turbine Points. Andeon won second place and 2,500 TP. The dwarf twins, Hjarf and Bjarf, earned the most votes from the audience with sheer charismatic presence, winning the top prize of 5,000 TP.

Eighteen riders qualified for the grand finale, the Bree Cup championship horse race. Sadly, Maytook did not report to the race master by post time. The bookie was hard-pressed to keep up with the wagering as the remaining riders were ponied in front of the audience -- Aalloria, Andeon, Caiyyd, Craicwyth, Draugelen, Eliwren, Emlissel, Errowen, Euriel, Falathielle, Gwadrodewyn, Kikilaa, Lelirnel, Lifebringer, Nisael, Rasenbeth and Shintako.

The race began with a thunder of hooves on cobblestone and the cheer from the crowd was nearly deafening. Five riders lost their lead at the Oldstone Ruins as their horses refused the narrow passage. Half a dozen more riders dropped out of the race when their horses took injuries descending from the hobbit neighborhood on the cliffs overlooking northern Bree-town. Three more riders had difficulty maneuvering into the tight alley on the back stretch.

Due to the immense lag caused by large crowds and the Anniversary festival the race was extremely difficult to call. There were initial discrepancies in the perspective at the finish line. The riders and audience were forced to wait for some time while screenshots and video were reviewed in detail. Although the wait was regrettable, the judges were determined to give a fair and well-researched ruling.

The discrepancies were cleared up and the winners were announced. First place, 300 gold and 5,000 Turbine Points were awarded to Aalloria on bay Barabossa. Second place, 100 gold and 2,500 TP were awarded to Eliwren on Horse Lords-trained Saydrie. Third place, 75 gold and 1,000 TP were awarded to Lifebringer on yule-clad Mischief. Kattalina won 5 gold for her wager.

The Bree Cup was followed by a number of "fun runs" as the crowd was invited to try their hand at the difficult course. After the race, the air was filled with the pleasant scent of pipe-weed smoke and the sound of drunken revelers singing their favorite songs. Several musicians took up prominent positions down the street to show off their own compositions. Ale flowed freely and old friends swapped stories. It was truly a day to remember!

Thank you to our race sponsors - Atli Spider-bane of Archet, Aedon, Aldekim, and other donators who prefer to remain anonymous.

Much gratitude to Sapience of Turbine for donating all of the Turbine Point prizes and titles.

Hugs and thanks to members of the Lonely Mountain Band who donated the gold prizes.

Thank you to the bands - Die Meisterbarden von Bree, Bright Star, Breakfast Club, and Andune.

Many thanks to our race course judges, bookies and other volunteers -- Andeon, Beag, Byrcha, Craicwyth, Floradine, Harperella, Lhinnthel, Limorel, Lynxa, Meneladan, Mornawen, Naethril, Patria, Shariye, Shintako, and Sonca. Without these fine individuals, racing wouldn't be possible!

From the desk of Aldekim Etal

What with six concerts Friday and Saturday it seems there was some concert going burn out and some of the concerts this week were performed to crowds substantially smaller than usual. Speaking of crowd size, the crowd size champion Weatherstock has finally been announced formally for this year. Some minor changes have been made to the sign up process in anticipation of more entries this year than in the past. The sign up period is supposed to last two weeks so I will post more detail about the sign up process next week if it appears to be a problem. Sign-ups for auditions opened this past Monday and I hear a number of bands have already registered. The sudden explosion of new bands forming has caused some concern that more bands will wish to play than can be accommodated for the three hour show. Only ten bands are accepted. Keep an eye out here for more information as sign-ups continue.

The crowd size issue was most apparent for the Andune Ensemble and Green Hill Music Society Concerts this week. Both bands put on their usual fine show with The Andune Ensemble comprised of Jorui, Runesdaeg, Brenthiel, Cennwyn, Geoffroi, Floradine, and after the first couple of tunes Lilikate and Bellcari. At one point or another in their show GHMS performers included Katelynrose, Gennyrose, Louni, Tunni, Fincin, Marre, Puppo, Tiridyn, Tiriphor, Hoppa, Kaleigh and me, Aldekim. For the GHMS show in particular there were times when it seemed the band outnumbered the audience.

It was a different story for Ales and Tales this week, perhaps due to two influences. The first half of the show appeared particularly well attended due to the presence in the audience of the eight members of the Runic Knights Orchestra, Zaxin, Chantillyrose, Belathriel, Rathlaer, Primrosiah, Sanicle, Khalawyn and Grimbori who performed early in the show. The new duo “Flock of Smeagols”,made up of Durrann and Codella, also offered their first ever Ales & Tales performance later in the evening. The crowd undoubtedly also included some folks there for the performance of Mornawens’ latest play “The Peddler of Waymeet” performed by the acting troupe of Tomrica, Tearna and Dori Bolger-Etal with narration by the playwrite Mornawen “Molly” Bayberry herself. Aside from that there was the typical Old Winyards Troupe including Aalloria, Mornawen, Byrcha, Lhinnthel, Tomeoric, Sonca and me, Aldekim. Mistress of Ceremonies work was handled by Aalloria with Sonca on hand once again to act as Master of Musical Mentoring.

Ending my report on a really sad note this week (and please forgive me if I offer some insider knowledge not available to the general public here) it seems some spoiled sport, poor losers have sent hate mail to a top finisher in one of this year’s Spring Racing Carnival horse races. To those who did this dastardly deed I say “Shame On You!” I hope you are identified and never allowed to compete in these fine races ever again.

You didn't see it because it was in my kinship forums. I picked it up and posted it here so people would have a chance to know about it. The "Flock of Smeagols" band is just a twosome so far, but they have made a few appearances around Landroval and are looking for more members if I understand it correctly. I think they are some kind of spin off from a group known as Don't Tempt Me Frodo, but I am less sure of that.

Smaller than usual audiences were still the standard this past weekend. With Bards, Beers, and longBeards taking a week off I was not particularly surprised to see Animal House performing outside the Prancing Pony at an earlier than usual time Saturday preceeding the BBB concert. Composed of Nightchade, Nightjasmine, Nightmagic, (that’s a lot of night names!) Lastritesjfc, and Wickedjfc (and what’s with the jfc ending?) the group put on a fine show.

Also no surprise was the appearance and performances by Fincin both prior to and immediately following the Andune Ensemble Concert this week. (The little gal really gets around the music scene) I was also a bit surprised to notice Chief Meadowlarke of the Bounder of the Shire outside the Pony just prior to the concert. (He claimed to be there on business, what sort of business I do not know. That claim was supported as he did not spend any significant time at the concert). Andune made up of Geoffroi, Jorui, Tomeoric, Floradine. Lithelinea and Lilikate this week put on their usual fine show despite the distraction caused for a few moments when several chickens appeared off to the side of the group.

I have been meaning to mention lately how the trend of bands soliciting encore requests has swept through the music scene, almost to the point of making the practice trite. Begun to the best of my knowledge by Bards, Beers, and longBeards the gimmick has since been taken up by the Andune Ensemble, and now and then by Old Winyards. I mention this today as the Andune Ensemble managed to freshen the practice up some this week by describing their performance as an “All Encore” presentation.

Ales & Tales this week in Staddle was clearly a victim of the movement of the Free People’s forces into a new territory. The crowd beginning at about one third of the usual size did eventually grow to about two thirds of its’ usual stature. I’m sure the Valars’ negative influence over the ability of people to hear music was a factor. Still the show went on under the Master of Ceremonies work of Galdrem. Old Winyards this week consisted of Tomeoric, Lilikate, Lhinnthel, Mornawen, and Galzagar. Reaching out in the absence of Sonca, usually the Mastert of Musical Mentoring, I, Aldekim, was called in for that job this week.

The Weatherstock V application deadline is May 20th. As I understand it there is still room for a band or two to perform at the event. The real problem now is the recent Valar-inspired difficulties with music. It seems there is some realistic fear that this, the largest event in all of the domains, may need to be delayed until the gods can be influenced to pay attention to the matter. For the record, the gods are not impressed when a single individual contacts them repeatedly about a problem. They are far more likely to respond when many people cry out ((think submit a bug report)). So, if you experience the problem where you can see notes coming from an instrument being played by someone, but you cannot hear the music, please submit a report.

Finally, some of you may have noticed the absence of the Green Hill Music Society this week. They are taking some time off once again, and I am sad to report I am unsure as to just when they will return to their Tuesday performances in Michel Delving.

From the desk of Aldekim Etal

This week as I waited for the beginning of the Andune Ensemble concert I heard a voice crying out about a cloak for sale. It was a voice I have heard many times and I must admit it thrilled me to finally take advantage of one of the bargains offered by Jefferey the Trader. It’s people like him that make Bree such a fine town and Landroval such a fine community.

Speaking about shopping, it is nice to see Lalia has finally returned from the barrow downs and opened a shop in Bree. It is very nice to have an opportunity to see the various goods in a real environment and not just some illustration in a window, though I do wonder about the wisdom of bringing horses into the shop. I also hope there is a regular turnover of inventory, there being so many wardrobe options in particular that people would like to see in the shop.

    Weatherstock Postponed!
    by Harperella,

Due to the U11 music bug, we're going to postpone Weatherstock. From what I understand, there is a good possibility that there will be a fix for this bug by June 15th. However, that's not a guarantee, so the following changes in schedule are in effect.

    1) Ministock is moved to June 15th, the original Weatherstock date. If the U11 music bug fix is not on live, we will host it on Bullroarer!

    2) Weatherstock will move to either July 13th or July 20th. I'll be posting polls in the next few weeks as to which date is best. Please consult with your bands and vote your preference when the poll goes live.

Watch here for more details as they are released.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------

Some say it is the will of the Valar. Some say it is the result of Sauron attempting to break the spirit of the Free People. Either way the result is the same. Music in Arda is clearly under attack. Attempts to deal with this problem have included many bands moving their concerts to places where they hope the problem is less intense. So was the case for the Andune Ensemble this past Sunday when they moved their concert just outside the Combe Gate to Bree. Playing to a fair sized audience, all things considered, the group composed of Geoffroi, Jorui, Bellcari, LIthelinea, Tomeoric, and Floradine this week managed to put on their usual fine show.

Despite the ongoing music crisis Ales & Tales drew their usual large audience this week when they appeared for their concert in the Raglan neighborhood of the Bree-homesteds, one of the many Lonely Mountain Band dominated neighborhoods all over Arda. Four was the magic number this week as both Old Winyards and the Runic Knights Orchestra performed as quartets. For Old Winyards it was Byrcha, Mornawen, Galzagar and Lhinnthel while for RKO it was Sanicle, Khalawyn, Primrosiah and Aadryn performing. Chastine of Don’t Tempt Me Frodo, Merilinel of Hobbitual and Galzagar who also acted as Master of Ceremonies for the evening all performed. (I’m sure there were others, but this reporter had to leave the show early this week) It was nice to see Brenyn at the show; I haven’t seen him for a long time now. Also both seen and heard being sarcastic was Daeleg who attributed his sharp tongue to the influence left over after he joined in recently playing with Bards, Beers and longBeards at their show. There was a rumor (unfounded and unverified mind you) that it is BBB, not the Valar or Sauron, behind the recent music problems. This reporter thinks that is giving a bit too much credit to the power and influence of BBB.

I’m still a bit confused about Flock of Smeagols. Originally I heard they were part of Don’t Tempt Me Frodo, but then Chastine appeared at Ales & Tales this week and seems to remain under the DTMF banner along with Falillith who was there in the crowd. Meanwhile the “Flock”, which seemed to be everywhere for a few weeks, has not appeared, to the best of my knowledge, for the past week or so?

And then there is this taken from a notice I saw posted in Bree.
    ----------------------------------------------------------
Another Wed is coming up and that means it is time for Bright Star to entertain you. This time, thanks to the Mayor's proclamation outlawing music in Bree, Bright Star will not be performing in the park. Instead, we will take our show to the hobbits in the farmer fields in Staddle so come and enjoy an evening of music and dance and Hobbity farmers.

That is the Farmer Fields in Staddle on Wed night at 10:30
    ---------------------------------------------------------

Well then, the Spring Festival finally got under way this week. The usual events are there, and I am told by my clanshobbit Brambel there are a few new rewards to be had including a horse, a warhorse gear set and some new cosmetic apparel. He seemed to think acquiring the full set of warhorse gear could prove rather challenging, requiring something like 60 spring leaves and 160 of each collectable flower. On the plus side the little fellow is finally learning the racial dances.

Sight seen: Brambel also told me he was amused, while gathering flowers just outside of Bree, when he came across the Animal House Band holding a practice session alongside the road. He claims that later in the evening he also noticed Lady Melanie of the Dale Nobility and the ever popular Tearna dancing and watching the practice session.

It is a bit disheartening to see the effects on music going on recently. On the other hand it is wonderful to see then number of performers and fans who are going to the trouble to do what is needed to see that the many concerts still go on. Kudos to you all.

Call it faith and well-informed guessing. There's no guarantee BR will be up then, nor that there will be patch then. But if there is a patch on BR and none on live, then we'll have ministock on BR so all bands can test their acts.

Rusham Stampede Rodeo - Sat June 29 - Join the fun!
The Windy Acres Ranch riding team is organizing a rodeo and you can join the fun!

We are aiming for the evening of Saturday, June 29th. The rodeo will take place on the Harrow Road farm in the Rusham neighborhood of Shire homesteads. The show will include a rodeo clown comedy act, war steed barrel racing, team penning, a “Best Wrangler” mounted fashion contest, and a “Best Rodeo Clown” talent contest. The audience will vote for the winners!

We are also looking for hobbit volunteers. We need stout Shire folk to act as “barrels” for the barrel racing competition. Riders will gallop their steeds in a cloverleaf pattern around the hobbits. These brave volunteers should wear bright, safety orange outfits to avoid being trampled.

The Lorien Livestock Liberation League has opened all of the barn doors, so we’re a little short on livestock for the team penning competition. Fortunately, there are no hobbit protection agencies. We need hobbits wearing animal masks and costumes to volunteer as cows, goats, chickens, pigs and donkeys.

If you would like to volunteer as a rodeo barrel or cow, please contact Kiralynn in-game on the Landroval server ((or email her at kiralynn@roll3d6.com)). We are also accepting sign-ups for two- and three-rider penning teams. Fashion and talent show contestants should register on June 29th during the hour before the rodeo begins.
    ----------------------------------------------------
The Windy Acres Ranch has also released a tentative schedule for the coming year. Please note these dates are still subject to change. Notices of changes will be posted here in the Free Press as they are released.

Despite the recent problems with music the Andune Ensemble put on their weekly show for a nice audience Sunday. Performed by Geoffroi, Brenthiel, Floradine, Lilikate, Tomeoric and Runesdaeg, The fine set of songs included some new works performed for the first time ever by the group. You have to offer kudos to the group for persisting in putting on their concerts in the face of the recent sound troubles, and kudos to the audience for showing up and going to the trouble of doing what need be done to enjoy the songs.

Besides being the venue for the upcoming Windy Acres Ranch Rodeo, Rusham was the location of Ales & Tales this week. As is typically the case, the show was begun with a set played by Old Winyards, the group comprised of Galzagag, Craicwyth, Lhinnthel, Mornawen, Byrcha and Tomeoric this week. It was Rayana acting as Master of Ceremonies adding a nice bit of comedy to the job. Master of Mentoring duties were handled by me, Aldekim, this week with assistance from Rayana and Gennyrose. With legendary vendor Tinki out of action due to health issues the Ales part of the show has been lacking recently and the Tales part has been a bit less than regular, too. This week the tales part did receive some attention as Shintako offered a very nice poem.

The “ales” and the “tales” may be somewhat reduced, but the music and celebrity watching go on as in the past. A duet of Mellodyus and Darksnuggler from The Old Harpy’s Crew performed as did Durrann and Codella from Flock of Smeagols. Kyrian offered a solo and two of my favorite ladies (and most popular celebrities) Melanie and Madaelin also offered up a fine duet. While they did not perform this week, noted musicians Cellendis, Merlinor, and Orladan as well as a few members of the Runic Knights Orchestra were also on hand for the show, as was Gennyrose of the Green Hill Music Society. In the end a fine show was enjoyed by all.

Unofficially applications to perform at Weatherstock this year have closed. At this point it looks like eleven bands are signed up to perform, with additional guest appearances by the three Lonely Mountain Band affiliated bands Old Winyards, The Andune Ensemble, and Bards, Beers and longBeards also scheduled to perform, though they will not compete for prizes. That is an expansion from the ten bands maximum enforced in past years.

I'm really not sure what's so hard to understand about this. XD I'm still 'flying under the banner' of DTMF because that is my kinship, and Flock of Smeagols and Don't Tempt Me Frodo are playing at Weatherstock together, as one band.

    For Further Further Clarification

Okay guys, here's the scoop about FoS and DTMF in as black and white terms as I can muster, since there has been some obvious confusion. I, Mirinaeth, one of the founding members of Don't Tempt Me Frodo on Silverlode server am also the co-founder of Flock of Smeagols. Both Flock of Smeagols and Don't Tempt Me Frodo are bands and kinships located on both the Silverlode and Landroval servers. Last year, Don't Tempt Me Frodo played at Weatherstock. The line-up last year was only comprised of Don't Me Frodo Kinship members - Chastine (as Bustable), Junes, (as Meate), Falillith, and myself Mirinaeth. So, then, Flock of Smeagols was born. Flock of Smeagols consists of myself, Mirinaeth, and Codella (who is a friend of Don't Tempt Me Frodo, but is officially in the Flock of Smeagols kinship). Codella and myself, Mirinaeth (redundancy is supposed to be both for clarification and comedic purposes), decided that we wanted to play for Weatherstock, but we knew that Chastine, Falillith, and Junes would not be available, which is why we decided to fly under the banner of Flock of Smeagols. Since the original sign-up, we have had a couple of random members want to play, but ended up not being available either after all of the date changes. We knew we needed 4 members to be eligible for Weatherstock (although we had to find out about this in a very roundabout way, which was a smidgeon frustrating), so we did have a difficult time trying to settle who would be the playing given all of the availability, interest, and date change issues. We are a small group of people, but can assure you that we have as much interest in and dedication to the Weatherstock event as some of the more seasoned participants (we're sure you understand that school schedules and the curveballs of life have a tendency of making things difficult to coordinate at times). However, now Chastine (equipped with a computer that can run the program) and Falillith (whose schedule will now allow her to perform) will be available for Weatherstock. So, to wrap this all up in a nice little (hopefully not confusing) package, the band performing for Weatherstock will be billed as "Flock of Smeagols Feat. Don't Tempt Me Frodo". There will be 4 total band members. The Flock of Smeagols band members will be Codella and Durrann (a.k.a. Mirinaeth) and the Don't Tempt Me Frodo members will be Chastine and Falillith. I know the whole deal with us may have been as clear as mud; however, don't worry folks. We will still rock your socks off.

My clansman Nellan was passing through Thorin’s gate and noticed a group playing songs for passers-by. Turns out it was “A Rock and a Hard Place”, a band visiting from the distant land of Dwarrowdelf to perform at Weatherstock V this year. The group comprised of Friewin, Winfrie, Jepster, Bruzo, Suidbert, Swaifro and Lanvoc was joined later in the set by Limonita, and according to Nellan a really nice set was played for a rather small audience. On the plus side it seems the band had not yet become aware of their acceptance to perform at Weatherstock, so Nellan was able to cheer them a bit with the good news.

A quick look at the Press kit for the band reveals the following information.

“Hello everyone! We're "A Rock and A Hard Place," a band on the Landroval server of "The Lord of The Rings Online." We are also known on the server of Dwarrowdelf as "The Lords and Ladies of the Strings." We really enjoy playing music, and for some of us, it's the reason we play the "Lord of The Rings Online." We play all kinds of music we like. We hope we get to meet you all in game one day.”

Their flyers go on to note…

“That's right, ladies and gentlemen, A Rock and A Hard Place(Landroval)/The Lords and Ladies of The Strings(Dwarrowdelf) is going to Weatherstock 2013! We hope to see you all there, and we sure are excited to be there! Thanks a bunch Weatherstock officers, we'll make sure to leave a mark no other band has left before! See you all there, and you better be there(Or else we'll smash you with lutes!) We love you guys, and we hope you'll join us for this huge band milestone! Weatherstock 2013 will be AWESOME!!!!

If what I saw was any indicator, those of us who do get to see them will be glad we did!

I have also had some initial contact with the band Don’t Tempt Me Frodo. It seems they are doing some sort of combined effort show with Flock of Smeagols.

“The lineup of players at this point is as follows:
    - Chastine (bandleader)
    - Mirinaeth (bandperson)
    - Aenrael (or other name TBD on Landroval, bandperson)
    - Some other guy, not Junes”

Somewhat more comprehensive information was available for Flock of Smeagols as follows from their Weatherstock Application.

    “Band Name: Flock of Smeagols
    Server: Landroval/Silverlode

Band Leader: Durrann (Dwarven minstrel, of the Iron Hills)

Band Members: Codella Mosstoes (Hobbit hunter)
Aenrael (on Silverlode, name TBA on Landroval
That other guy (new to LOTRO, name TBA for Landroval)

Background Information: Flock of Smeagols was originally a Kinship created on Silverlode server by Mirinaeth. The band has been created on Landroval to play at Weatherstock in Don't Tempt Me Frodo's stead, due to unavailability of most of the same members from last year. As mentioned in the band app, Durrann and Codella are the founders of the Flock of Smeagols band, and the circumstances of their meeting was,...er...special, indeed.

FoS has played two independent, one-ish hour concerts on Landroval within the last month and has made an appearance at both Ales & Tales and the EMS Open Mic. Members have performed as part of Don't Tempt Me Frodo for weddings, server events, private parties, Ales & Tales, Open Mic shows, solo shows, and of course, Weatherstock!

Durrann and Codella are getting more involved in .abc creation and are definitely planning to create an original piece for performance at Weatherstock. We will also likely be working with the lyrical system, and have some fun currently in the works with that.

We've been wanting to do more with event design and creation, but that has been a challenge, as over half of our normal members are in the middle of pursuing higher education, which as we all know, tends to monopolize a person's life, at the time. Good news though folks, there is this grand thing called Summer Break!! Huzzah! \o/

Music style: A little of everything. Our original composition will likely be something more serious and lively, but we aren't beyond doing cheap covers and twisting existing popular songs for our own devious purposes (*foreshadows*). For those that have attended our concerts, you'll be aware that our signature song is "I Ran", which we think is both appropriate and particularly amusing.”

Of course all of this is better explained in the post immediately preceeding this in this topic on the forums.

A third band accepted for Weatherstock, and already fairly well known to audiences at Ales & Tales Monday evening concerts is the Runic Knights Orchestra. The following information about RKO has been taken from their Weatherstock application.

“Band Name: Runic Knights Orchestra (RKO)
    Home Server: Brandywine
Band Leader: Steeloak (Also Runic Knights Kinship Leader)

    Web Site: http://www.rklotro.com

All band members are members of the Runic Knights kinship on the Brandywine Server.

    --------------------

    The Runic Knights Orchestra
The following band members may attend Ministock and/or Weatherstock:

    Aadran
    Chantillyrose
    Grimbori (Grimbori/Hordmod)
    Khaladreth (Khalawyn/Alyrwen)
    Primrosia (Primrosiah/Hartsing)
    Rathinosk (Rathlaer/Rathlam)
    RunicKid
    Sanforyd (Sanicle)
    Steeloak
    Yarissa (Belathriel)
    Zaxin

    Background Information

Founded during beta, the Runic Knights is one of the largest and oldest active kinships on the Brandywine server. The Runic Knights Orchestra was created in 2009 to help make make Runic Knights events more fun for our members, and to serve as ambassadors for Runic Knights to the Brandywine community.

The Runic Knights Orchestra represents the core, the very heart of the Runic Knights kinship.

The Runic Knights Orchestra plays at kinship events, festivals and stages the occasional random concert on the Brandywine server. Over the past couple years, we have also maintained a presence on the Landroval server and members will occasionally stop by to play a random concert or visit at Ales & Tales.

    Musical Style

The vast majority of songs in our extensive library (over 800 songs as of this post) were transcribed by RKO members, including Pinoh, Thjalfi, Rathinosk and Khaladreth.

The library covers a wide variety of music ranging from Medieval/Celtic and Classical music to Jazz, Big Band and Modern Rock, Dance and Pop music. We love music, all music.”

Returning after their appearance at Weatherstock IV last year, it pleases me greatly to see the Chosen Few will be with us again this year. Here is some background information about that fine band.

    “Bandname: The Chosen Few
    Server: [EN-RP] Laurelin

Bandleader : Grymrock Grey - Order of the Divine Brew

    Bandmembers:
Babushka - Order of the Divine Brew
Gwestia - Order of the Divine Brew
Merlas - Order of the Divine Brew (Kinchief)
Chryssie - The Grand Order of The Lost Mathom
Tallic - The Grand Order of The Lost Mathom
Nafing - Order of the Divine Brew
Gotilia - Order of the Divine Brew
    Uswin - Adventurers of Arda

    Background information:
'The Chosen Few' where formed late in 2010 by the kinships 'Order of the Divine Brew', 'Adventurers of Arda' and 'No Strings Attached'. (Grym, Trotgard, Uswin, Chadwick). We then expanded with two more members from 'Durins Folk' (Norgi) and 'Shire Rose' (Amorey). We kept this lineup until last years Weatherstock, but due to people stop playing the game, and other various reasons, we are now in the 2nd lineup for the band.

We have been transcribing our own tunes almost from the beginning, and have now a quite big collection of tunes for all occasions, and we have done a good deal of concerts through the two years with various public balls, birthday parties, anniversary concerts and stuff like that.

We have even played the music for a dwarven transvestite stripper at one occasion.... 0.o.... (dont ask..)

In 2011 we started up the yearly event 'Archet Aid' at Laurelin with five bands present, and last year we had seven bands present. This year, who knows? :-)

    Music style
The Chosen Few claims to be a 'barn-dance band' with merry / danceable tunes in the genres of bluegrass / blues / Jigs and some irish/keltic tunes mixed in. We are also known to have the occasional slow tunes for those cheek-against-cheek dances. :-)

As you can see from these postings, bands are gathering this year from many distant lands, and it is my honor to introduce them to you and give you all a little information about them.

Despite the problems with music all across Arda, many bands are putting on their regular shows. Saturday evening was no exception as Animal House put on their typical Saturday evening concert. Crowds are also beginning to rebound as was seen Sunday when a somewhat larger than usual audience gathered outside the Bree-Combe Gate for the weekly Andune Ensemble Concert. Andune was a bit smaller in number of performers this week being comprised of Geoffroi, Jorui, Brenthiel, Floradine and Tomeoric. That meant that they needed to abandon their pre-published song list, but they put on the usual fine show none the less.

Evidence of growing audiences was also apparent at Ales & Tales this week. Performed this week at the Dolwood Tavern, the show was introduced by the proprietor of the tavern Prindle Greenfeet who also acted as Mistress of Ceremonies for the evening. As is always the case the show began after a few introductory comments from Prindle with a performance by Old Winyards, comprised of Byrcha, Tomeoric, Lhinnthel,Galzagar, Mornawen, and Aalloria this week.

After the opener from Old Winyards, Nimrodelian Tale Spinner took the stage to offer part 1 of a three part tale. Unfortunately I got the impression he would be offering parts 2 and 3 in Staddle the nerxt day and not at Ales & Tales next week. The tale was rather lengthy and so it lead right up to announcements and musical mentoring. I must admit I was a bit surprised to find myself directing musical mentoring again this week as I was not asked in advance about it and only discovered that I was doing it when it was announced! Following that Evirdir played a few tunes and I must admit I was much impressed and hope to discover who wrote his songs as I would love to have copies for my own performance. Following that we had a few tunes from one of my personal favorites the dynamic duo of Merlinor and Cellindis.

As it happens I had to depart early, but not before the highly entertaining set played by Aalloria and the Old Harpy’s Crew. They began in a style they have used before with two performers on stage and many others scattered around in the audience lending new meaning to the concept of surround sound. They followed their opener with a number of songs performed by the entire group of eleven hobbits, all on stage. This group really does put on quite a show!

Tonight it’s Bright Star in the Park Concert week….only not in the park this week. It seems this was THE week for performances at the Dolwood Tavern. Below is a copy of Bright Star’s concert notice.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------

This week it is Bright Star in the...erm...Dolwood Tavern. Yes, we will be playing in the Dolwood Tavern this week. This week, we will be featuring songs from our resident drummer Daylak. So, come and soak your loved one in ale as you enjoy a evening of dance and music. Just stay away from the Breewater.

That's Bright Star in the Dolwood Tavern. Wed night at 10:30PM (Eastern). 9 Chestnut St, Dolwood, Breeland Homesteads.

I figured since I'm partially in charge of our group this year, I'd add a bit to this. Chastine and Falillith can be seen running around together frequently as Don't Tempt Me Frodo and Codella and Mirinaeth/Durrann (myself) can be seen running around as Flock of Smeagols. We are mostly broken up into this grouping because of time zones. Also, you may not have seen Flock of Smeagols around as much lately due to RL ramping up right now for both myself and Codella. So as I said before, we're really trying to make an effort to keep active and to keep entertaining everyone, as that is what we all are best known for (aside from our generally sarcastic and playful natures . We are totally stoked for Weatherstock this year and I, personally, have been looking forward to this since it ended last year (I even have the event poster displayed in my house!). So everyone breathe, try not to let confusion or the music bug get you down, and just be prepared to have a fantastic time!! ^_^

    re: Andúnië for Weatherstock

    by Makalaure Canafinwe

What is your role in Weatherstock?:
Makalaure - Band Leader of Andúnië

Have you performed in public as a band before?
    Yes.
    1. We have performed many times on both Landroval and Laurelin.
    2. We have played for the well-attended Grand Elven Ball for several years on Laurelin.
    3. We test our new songs each week and give impromptu concerts on both Laurelin and Landroval.
    4. We were at Weatherstock last year and won the Light In The Dark award. We pride ourselves on original songs created by our members.

    Band Members:
Andúnië band members are: Ancalimo, Earalenia, Earmoth, Elinnea, Fernith, Fionnuala, Lhasbelin, Makalaure, Miste, Nifferil, Phedelene, Taendis, Tamaren, Tuilieth. There are others but I am afraid I will spell their names wrong. Our members are from Russia, Europe, Australia and the USA.

    Contact information:
Makalaure on both the Landroval and Laurelin Server

    Home Server:
Landroval and Laurelin (we are a two server band)

    Kinship:
We are an all Elven group from many kinships who are drawn together by our love of music.

Introduce yourself or your band here.:
I am Makalaure and the band Andúnië is made of Elves who came together two years ago originally on the Laurelin server. I hesitate to say "my" band, even as bandleader, for each one of us is capable of leading and I know some are better than I am at the job so it's not really my band at all. We are a team. We also play in other bands for the enjoyment of it because we like and respect each other.

Each band member is extremely talented. Many of us are real life musicians and we create our own songs for game play with themes of Arda. We LOVE music and we hope it shows! Last year at Weatherstock we were the band that played the drum song written by Phedelene. This year we hope to be back with more original tunes that might wow you!

Lately we performed at some big community events like the "Bree Dressur Derby" on Vanyar and the "Spring Carnival Racing" on Landroval. Here's a link to our livestreams on Twitch.tv:

Bands Leaders: Have you performed in public as a band before? Please supply documentation here.:
Th' Breakfast Club has appeared at th' Previous two Weatherstock Festivals, (2011 an 2012), PLays a impromptu concert in Bree every Saturday which can be anywhere from 45 minutes t' a hour an a half long on our Home Server o' Crickhollow, went t' Gladden last Fall t' play a concert as a prize fer CSTM's Child's Play Auction, an just last weekend came t' Landroval t' play a bit fer th' Races...

Band Members: What band are you a member of?:

    Kinship:
    Second Breakfast

Introduce yourself or your band here.:
Th' Breakfast Club is a Band that originated with th' Second Breakfast Kinship on Crickhollow, but which now counts as Band Members folks from 3 or 4 other Kinships as well. Th' thing that binds us t'gether is th' desire t' play GOOD music fer th' Free Peoples, an t' add t' th' repertoire o' music floatin around Arda as many new arrangements, interestin lyrics an yes, even original melodies as we can. Although we have several members that come up with new songs fer th' Band t' play, we ain't above playin other folks' tunes, so long as they are well-built an musically interestin. An we hope that others'll find our contributions t' be worth playin as well. Tho I'm sure this can be said 'bout any o' th' Bands that'll be playin in Weatherstock (an many that won't be as well), we're all just terribly pleased that th' Valar have given us th' ability t' make music in Arda, an we hope t' use that ability help bring harmony, both literally an figuratively, t' lands o' Middle-earth.
