I propose a tab when we are repairing our equipment that reads "repair equipped only" or even "repair all equipped items under 25%" so as not to need to search through what we're wearing and what is junk. It would just be a tremendous time saver and convenience given the relative money sink that repairing can be. On the other hand it would be an added level of immersion to be able to quest/train a skill to be able to repair goods in the field. I'm sure a hobbit of the Shire or an Elf hunter would be able to hammer his/her chest piece around a tree for a quick fix even if it could only max out at say 75% durability.
