There are several songs in flats and minors. As with all music, if the Key chord has flats and sharps, the notes in the music don't have to be marked since it is automatically known to musicians to flat and sharp those notes. The abc music program also knows this. So, at the top of the abc file is the Header information. the last one is the Key denoted by the K: what follows is the key of the music. so the key of B flat would be Bb, F flat Fb, minors in lotro can only me denoted by 'min' so B minor would be Bmin and so on.

If the lotro music system doesn't recognize he Key you wanted, try to change it to find what it will accept. If no Key is mentioned I believe it will play in C major. If you can't get it to work with the Key header at all, then go ahead and put your sharps, flats and naturals in the melody notation.

Thank you for the response, I just wasnt sure about the notation for the header, if it should be _ or what. So thank you.

I can't seem to get it to work. I have created and saved selections posted by users and when i try to play them i get an error in game that says problem with ABC Notation.

    Example:

    1 8 5 4 S+4 5 S+3 5
    1 8 5 4 S+4 5 S+3 5
    2 8 5 4 S+4 5 S+3 5
    2 8 5 4 S+4 5 S+3 5
    4 8 5 4 S+4 5 S+3 5
    4 8 5 4 S+4 5 S+3 5
    S+2 5 S+1 5 S+2 5 S+3 5 S+4 5 S+3 5 S+2 5

Pasted this in to a text file and named it SweetChild.abc

    Shouldn't this run as is?

Nope. Mostly because it's not ABC.

The stuff in the Song Compilation thread isn't ABC, and isn't machine playable. It's pseudo-note-type-this-code based on the particular keymapping the poser happened to use.

ABC is a specific notation, basically sheet music in ASCII form, and has nothing whatsoever to do with how your key are mapped. It's a language unto itself, and a standardized one with a specification and everything. It's all up there at the 1st post.

Here is an ABC transcription of Sweet Child o Mine, that you should be able to replace into that text file you had. Make sure that you put in the whole header part, and the ABC section as well.

Does anyone know of a good site to find music that is already translated in ABC notation? Like with a large variety of songs?

I just came across this thread and enjoyhed the OP. Sounds relatively simple and I'll be giving composing a try here soon.

I have a question, though....(as I hate scaning through pages and pages of posts):

How do you notate playing more than one note at a time? Here's a specific example(s):

How do you notate playing a C and an E at the same time?

A more complex version of that question...

How do you notate playing a C and an E at the same time where the C holds for 2 beats and the E holds for 1 beat? And, maybe even play C and E, hold the C for two beats, play the E on the first beat at the same time as the C, then on the second beat play an F for one beat?

Chords are played by useing Brackets ie, [CE] would play Note C and E together. U can write this for your second example as [C2E] which would sound the C note for 2 beats and the E for 1. People have reported that u may get a note aready sounding error doing it that way though, (not in all cases). I have found it best to write a chord like that by using the tie command (-). It would look like this [C-E] C

this way takes a bit longer to transpose a song, but u wont get that note already sounding error.

    Hope this helps,

    Durinsbane

You will get the note already sounding error if you type [C2E] C i think. It seems Lotro holds the C the proper time but counts the measure off the implied 1 for the E. In any instance where you try to play the note that is being held before the count reaches the duration of the held note you get the error. Its much better to use Durins suggestion in all cases with that split timing to avoid errors. Files that are auto converted from midi seem to do the split times quite a bit.

your followoup question can be done as [C-E][CF]

Re: The ABCs of Player Music Sharing

Is there some sort of current thread saying what parts of ABC notation do or don't work in Lotro now?

Seems like some things listed at the front have now been addressed and work, yet others (tuplets) have not, and I'd like to know what I have to use workarounds on.

I guess I'll chack back in a couple months and see if there is any sort of response that I haven't figured out myself in the mean time.

Ok, I've spent 30 minutes trying to find a consise explanation of how to play music in-game and not finding it... the posts here are either out-dated or contain links that go to advertisers that have nothing to do w/ playing songs in-game. Could someone post some instructions on how to play a song with an instrument, and a currently working link that has songs to download (ABC or whatever is currently what is needed)? I'm just frustrated at going to the Music category here on the Forum page and not finding instructions on how to play music! Am I obviously missing a thread somewhere? Thanks so much.

You can get all that you ask for at....thefatlute.com

    But,

    Basics for playing music...

    Get/buy a instrument from a Bard.

    Equip said instrument.

    Type, /music
    -or-
right click on your avatars picture, and select play music from drop down menu.

You can now play live music by pressing key's 1-8, or holding down control and pressing 1-8, or holding down alt and pressing 1-8. (note the control and alt may be wrong I forget what the default setting for the game are, as I have remapped mine keyboard)

for playing a song file while in music mode, refer to thefatlute they give a good tutorial on how to download from site and what to do after you have music files in your music folder.

good luck and welcome to the music community. If you have any other questions feel free to post here!

Re: The ABCs of Player Music Sharing

Did anyone happen to mention that if you type /playlist your chatwindow will fill with what you have in your music folder ready to play?

The <name> of the song file is directly to the left side of the line followed by a different color text explaining what you are playing.

    ex:
vader The Imperial March by John Williams (time?)

vader will be in a different color, maybe your standard color
The imperial march etc will be in another color and this is what will be displayed before you play it

If you have typed /play vader sync
you and your raid/fellowship will see "The Imperial March" stuff... prefaced by the fact that you will start playing it
when someone in the raid types /playstart.

If you don't see those things in your chat window something is wrong. If it is on your playlist try another song to see if it might just be that song that has an issue. If you dont see the playlist then you probably do not have any correct files in your music folder.

No, I did not read the entire thread. I figure a lot of people wont either since most of the first pages were done in '07 before a lot work was done on the player music.
