I'm great in girth yet still quite mighty,
Alas I was separated from my kin,
And the red serpent devoured me.

Here a great lord dwelt during time of celebration,
A great treasure he guarded, it drew much temptation,
Darkness then entered there, darkness unbidden,
The great lord it slew, his great treasure taken.
Would the answer to the second riddle be Formenos? If I recall correctly Finwe was slain be Melkor (the Darkness that entered there) during the theft of the Silmarils (the great treasure) from Formenos (with Finwe being the lord of the Noldor to the tune of 9000 years he'd qualify as a great lord).

I'm still chewing on the others but I haven't given up yet!

Yes, there are many places with treasures and lords being stolen and slain, but none of the guesses have yet happened during a time of celebration. I thought that riddle was going to be easy... maybe I'll give you guys a little more time with it and if you can't guess it I'll give you a hint.

sorry, Bombur and an ent are incorrect.
Oh, heh, yeah...they're alternate names for the same creature (from mythology/folklore.) I was trying to find the other name (I can't actually find my copy of TATB)

I think so, gimli gets all excited because the moon is reflecting off the surface and nearly dies of happiness.
If you're in the market for a good book check out The Milhavior Chronicles by the former Tolkien expert of LOTRO Jonathan "Berephon" Rudder. It's excellent and it supports an independent writer/publisher.

Ok let's try this again hehe
LA I concur with a guess made by someone yesterday, (can't remember who sorry) for your riddle:

"I go to battle though I fear we won't win,
I'm great in girth yet still quite mighty,
Alas I was separated from my kin,
And the red serpent devoured me."

The guess was Forlong the Fat. He came to Rohan's aid at the pelennor fields, was probably pretty sure he wouldnt win hehe, and he was famously great in girth ...not sure about the red serpent...
anyway im not taking credit for the guess, can't remember who originally said it

oh and I must celebrate my 100th post....again woohoo

Well I believe the red serpent is the standard of the Harradrim, to whom I believe Forlong fell. So I think you're correct.

That was my guess. I guess the reply got lost in the forum rollback (I assume that was what happened to my posts yesterday). The red serpent was the banner of the Easterlings, whose king Theoden killed in battle - which is why my first guess was Theoden.

Hear my hammer! Fear my anvil!
I joined the sun and moon to conquer darkness,
    And darkness indeed did groan.
Hear my hammer! Fear my anvil!
A cleaver of iron and retriever of light,
This also I made on my own.
Hear my hammer! Fear my anvil!
Who gave life to a dragon greater than Angband's own?
    It was I alone.
Hear my hammer! Fear my anvil!
    For I have great renown.
Also lost in the rollback was that this referred to Telchar of Nogrod.

Ok so i guess it's technically Caranfindil's turn to post one, but I gotta put this riddle up now, I spent some serious time on this one, and am rather proud of it
check it out: (oh and yes it's rather easy, but that's ok this time around hehe)

    ...'Neath vast and trackless firmament
‘Neath sea with dark celestial tide
This flower on great journey went
    To bloom in garden luminous
Wielding a flame from white-winged bride
A precious gift by power sent
To light the way, to serve as guide
    Past deep expanse, voluminous
...This flower, born from snow-white tree,
Found garden bright, with soil blest
And gardeners there did then decree
    A voyage dark and beautiful
That weary flower would not find rest
But sail a vast and trackless sea
A silver flame upon its breast
    As shining servant, dutiful

    so there ya go

    Very nice one.

    Wild guess: Earendil?
Arda Shrugged : Elendilmir (RIP) -> Arkenstone -> Anor (RIP) -> Landroval -> Treebeard

Once again SL nails it hehe
The answer is indeed Earendil's ship, Vingilot, the "Foam Flower" hehe
made from the birchwoods, (white trees)
bearing the silmaril brought to Earendil by his wife elwing in swan shape (flame from white winged bride)
the dark trackless sea being the night sky
    the garden being valinor
    etc..

    anyway well done as usual

ps: lol caranfindil, i cant wait to see that poem when your done with it haha
