Sorry, that's incorrect. But don't stop guessing at these riddles; it's what keeps this thread alive.

    Re: The Riddle-Game

Alright, I feel that with each wrong guess I'm getting closer to the answer.

I still think the ban that was broken is the ban of the Valar, but the greatest light must be the Two Trees. After the trees were destroyed, a new tree was formed from them, but without light. The tree born of the Two Trees sired a long line of trees throughought the history of Arda, including the White Tree of the Eldar and the White Tree of Numenor, but the ones that grew after the ban was broken would have been the seedlings brought to Middle Earth by the Faithful.

Soooooo, my answer is.... Drumroll please... The White Trees of Gondor.

Oh I was just thinking about how the fortune could be the game itself and how irked I get whenever Vista kicks me out of the game and gives me a blank screen (which happens far too often for my taste)

Sorry, you're incorrect yet again. But you have indeed gotten very much closer. I suggest doing a little bit of research for this riddle.

actually, let me change the first line a little to make this easier for you.

We dwell under the greatest of kings,
In us the greatest of lights once passed through,
    Although after our light's rending,
And after the broken ban, we grew.

Unfortunately I'm not an expert on Tolkein, or his lore, so my information is probably wrong, but I'l throw a guess out there:

I'm going to take your statement about "under" the greatest kings literally, and talk about the vaguely reffered to crematorium chambers in Gondor the barbaric Kings used after Numenor was destroyed and before they re-established themselves(I think this was vaguely referred to in The Return of the Kings), so I think it applies to

    Those "middle time period" Kings?

God I just embarrased myself horribly

Nope, sorry. Actually, you have the right idea taking "under the greatest of kings" literally. But by "the greatest of kings" I meant one king. The one king who was the very greatest of all kings ever to rule in Arda. (hint, hint)

ok i have a guess for this one. The Pelori, also called the mountains of defence. The highest peak of the Pelori was Taniquetil, on which Manwe dwelt. So they were "under a very great king", you cant get much greater than manwe hehe. The "greatest of lights passing through" was a cleft cut into the Pelori by the valar, called the Calacirya, or The Pass of Light. This was to let the light of the 2 trees shine through from the west onto the Bay of Eldamar and Tol Eressea.
The "light's rending" was probably Melkor's destruction of the two trees (or the lamps of the valar maybe...hmm),..after which the pelori "grew" as defence against further assault
The ban probably refers to the ban of the valar as Womdon already pointed out.
    So my guess: THE PELORI

(sorry that was so long winded hehe, just wanted to share the fruits of my research haha)

if im totally wrong i'll be very sad hehe

Ok - you're certainly starting to think here in the right direction. But, no, I'm not talking about Gabilshathur. I will go further and tell you that I was not referring to the Rammas Deluon, either - but again, this is the right kind of thinking.

For handy reference, the riddle was as follows:

a well-cordoned land, home to folk of small size
and champions fell with the stars in their eyes
is teeming with flesh-and-blood evil who rage
at our flashing and screaming that rattle their cage

as heirs unannounced to a valiant dream
    a thinly veiled pair, we're a brilliant team --
with backs to the wall and strong courage frayed
i take up your slack while you lend your aid

    Re: The Riddle-Game

Hm, this would be much easier if I knew which cordoned you were speaking of lol

    1. A line of people, military posts, or ships stationed around an area to enclose or guard it.
    2. A cord or braid worn as a fastening or ornament.
    3. A ribbon usually worn diagonally across the breast as a badge of honor or decoration.
    4. Architecture A stringcourse.
    5. Botany A tree or shrub, especially a fruit tree such as an apple or pear, repeatedly pruned and trained to grow on a support as a single ropelike stem.

#4 and 5 defintions makes me think of the shire, my least favorite zone. But I'm pretty much stumped from here lol

I'm using it as a verb (participle), not a noun - I'm not saying that the land is littered with cordons of one obscure type or another (wasn't even aware of most of those definitions you listed, lol); just saying that the land is cordoned off pretty well. Like you'd speak of the borders of a crime scene, or a VIP area, etc.

So, people have correctly surmised that the folk of small size are hobbits. So far no one has discussed who the "fell" with the "light in their eyes" are, who the "flesh-and-blood evil" are or what our "flashing and screaming" is that they're raging about, and what their "cage" might be (well-cordoned, hmm? ).

Once you know the context from the first stanza, the particulars of the second stanza (e.g. what "thinly veiled," "brilliant," "slack," "aid," etc. are referring to - again, all very specific references... I'll also go ahead and say that the "heirs unannounced" part is the least transparent, so don't get stuck on that) will probably be readily apparent.

(I hope... please, somebody figure this out! I don't want my first riddle to be a dud. )

Well I am probably completely wrong here, but could it be refering to Merry and Pippin? The first line seems to be referencing hobbits, and since it mentions a pair, who else could it be?
