Before Gondolin (Sindarin: the hidden rock) Turgon was lord in Nevrast (Sindarin: the hither shore) residing in the halls of Vinyamar. I don't remember any cleft though. Perhaps you're thinking of Finrod's stronghold of Nargothrond, which was built into caverns in the deep gorge of the river Narog? That's how Finrod got his surname Felagund (Dwarvish: hewer of caves).

The only thing i can think of is the Gate of the Noldor, in which Tuor came to Vinyamar. cant' currently think why its called that.

I don't recall if this was the cleft into Nevrast/Vinyamar or Gondolin, but wasn't there a Rainbow cleft? So named because of the way the sunlight
reflected the spray of the river that ran through it?

It is indeed the Rainbow Cleft, named because the spray of the Sea there made a permanent rainbow there.
